Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

This is a good, short (or perhaps "compact" is closer) novella featuring one of Armstrong's favorite characters from her Otherworld series, Eve. Though part of a long series, it's a self-contained story that no knowledge of prior events or backgrounds is required in order to enjoy. Set in a world of rich mythological and folklore infrastructure, it's a story with ghosts, fates, oracles, djinn, and all manner of cleverly drawn fantastical creatures, most notably a spunky angel with an attitude who just wants to play dress-up pirate games with her boyfriend. Fast and fun, though I may well have been a little disappointed had I paid the original publisher's list price.

I'm going to start by saying that I love Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series. Love it. I have ridiculous amounts of love for it. I would shower it with rose petals if I could. And if it didn't make me sound like a creepy stalker. Having said that, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if you haven't read the WotO series and you decide to dive into this book anyway you're going to be wondering who all these wonderful characters are.

The book itself is a fun little ride with Eve on one of her missions for the Fates. As always, Eve is being her usual self- getting herself into trouble and using her wits and ample magical abilities to work her way back out. She breaks rules left and right but she's willing to face the consequences of her actions, which is refreshing since she's a dark witch and they're usually portrayed as being all about wiggling their way out of consequences.

For all her practicing of the dark arts and consorting with various shady characters, Eve's really a good person at heart. She sees things through from beginning to end and she's fiercely loyal.

What can I say? I like my good guys a little dark sometimes.

Eve Levine has just finished a six-month stint as an angel and is ready for a vacation with her lover Kristof Nash when the Three Fates call her back to work. They want her to stop the Djinn uprising and find out who is behind it.

I'm catching up on some of the short-stories in the Women of the Otherworld series. I listened to the audiobook version of this one, but it really didn't stick with me. A few days after listening to it, I don't recall very much. Eve gets a little help from Jamie, Jeremy, and Kristof in this one. My rating: 3 Stars.

This is a neat little story of Eve and how she is enjoying or not enjoying her new job. ;)

I didn't mind it, kinda wished I had listened while I was listening to the series its not a big deal though.

The narration was ok not my favorite.

"Angelic" is like the Holy Grail for fans of Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series. It was released in January of 2010 as a limited release novella. If you didn't order one of these in advance, you were out of luck. They were sold out before the release day. But now, it's available on ebook, so most of us are getting our first look at the story.

It focuses on Eve, the ghost/angel who narrated Haunted. She is just coming off of a six month stint on angel duty, and expected to spend the next 6 months on the ghostly plane with her man, Kristoff. But the Fates tell her she needs to do one more job, tracking down a djinn problem. Eve is tired of getting jerked around by the powers-that-be. She's always been a rebel, but she does a good job and she wants her due. So she decides to do the job her own way --and even hopes to get "fired" from her job as an angel while she is at it.

I like Eve. She is tough and irreverent. We also get appearances from Kristoff and several of the lesser characters we met in "Haunted." I enjoyed the story and I'm so glad I got the chance to read it. I'm just as glad I'm not one of the folks who spent an exorbitant amount of money to get a copy on ebay. 4 stars.

I love Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld novels, but I’m not a huge fan of special limited edition novels or books. They are usually books that you pay a good deal of money for and can’t really carry around with you for fear of damaging the book.

Thankfully, I didn’t have that problem with Angelic by Kelley Armstrong. It’s short, just under one hundred pages, so it was an hours worth of glorious reading. I enjoyed it so much that I read it two times in a row.

In Angelic, Armstrong returns to having Eve Levine narrate her story. Tired of letting the Fates push her around, she sets about trying to get herself fired from her otherworldly job but in the end gets herself in a heap of trouble. Though she has good intentions, she proves that, if anything, she is far from angelic…

What I love about Armstrong’s writing is its strength of voice. Each of her narrators sound different and no character is the same. Even better, the stories are engaging and speed by at a fast pace.

Angelic is no different. Though it’s a short read, it feels like a whole novel. You’ve got all the emotional highs and lows of a full length read packed into a handful of pages. Angelic is a wonderful read from start to finish and it left me wanting more of Eve.

I’ve missed her as a narrator of the series and it was like I was visiting with an old friend. While I wish there had been more to the story, I will take what I can get.

And read it as many times as possible.

This was a fun short novella, a bit of magic dust spread around and there should have been a few more like it to bridge the gaps between the main books.

Heather's Notes
I like Eve - even if she is a bad girl. I liked that she got the better of not just the demon and the dinji but also the fates

I don't feel like I have anything else to say about this book than what I did in the original review. I may not completely agree with some of the things I said then - I've gotten used to the husky female narrators - but it's not completely wrong either.
---------------------
As another review said, this book is like the Holy Grail for Otherworld-fans. When I read the Otherworld-series and was at my most fangirlish state, I hunted for this book but never found it. I had actually given up hope on finding it, when I saw it on Audible the other day and jumped on buying it. Of course, now I also learn that it is in one of the newer anthologies in the series.

I wished I'd bought the anthology instead.
Why? Because the narrator to this audiobook really irked me!
For some reason, all the ''original*'' paranormal/urban fantasy books has these kind of husky, smokey narrators that smack their lips and just don't work for me at all. This book is short, just 1 1/2 hour, and I still had to take multiple breaks so I could deal with the narrator!
So yeah, unfortunatly, that ruined this story for me.

The story seemed ok, and I liked all the round-about it did, as well as how Eve acted - I like her as a character in general, even if she isn't my favorite of the Women of the Otherworld.

I may re-read this novella some time in the future, as I still want to buy the last short story collections I'm missing in the series, I'll probably have forgotten most of this by the time I get around to buying them - they've hung out on my BookDepository wishlist for years now, so they can hang there a little more.

PS: I listened to this while deeply invested in the Cainsville stories, which I was a little worried about. While the writingstyle is clear and the same in both cases, the characters are different, and the worlds are different, in such a clear way that there was no problem at all. That speaks of a good author, if you ask me. Managing individuality in each series.

*Like Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. In my mind, those two and Kelley Armstrong are some of the original writers in this genre. They aren't, I know that, but those are the ones I've heard about and who's books I looked up as audiobooks early on, but never listend to BECAUSE OF THE OLD WOMAN NARRATOR!

This is a novella set in the Women of the Otherworld universe, starring Eve. Although my favorites are the wolves (especially Jeremy), I do like Eve, so I was glad to see she was the focus of this story. I think this is a great little stand-alone story, and though it's hard to tell exactly when it was intended to come, I'd guess sometime after Living with the Dead. This was a nice little look at Eve and her life after the events of Haunted with several other character cameos thrown in (although not gratuitously, they each have reasons for being included). As much as I enjoyed it, I would certainly not recommend picking up this story if you haven't read any other WotO books, as there isn't a lot of backstory included, likely due to the fact this was a novella and that it was originally a limited edition for fans. I, for one, am very glad this has recently become available as an e-book for everyone who wasn't lucky enough to grab up a copy originally to enjoy.

First Read 4/2010: (Audiobook)
Angelic is set five years after Haunted. Eve Levine is tired of her job and is thinking about getting herself fired while handling the newest job the fates have set forth for her.

A quick read, but I've always thought Eve was an interesting character and it was nice to read a little more about her. There was a little interaction with Christophe, Jeremy & Jaime as well.

I look forward to checking out Counterfeit Magic, Paige's Novella coming out later this year.

This is an Eve Levine short story in Armstrong's Otherworld series. As with all of Ms. Armstrong's work, it is well-written, has great character development, excellent dialogue, is fast-paced, action-packed, and an all-around good read. Eve is about to take off for a well-deserved vacation with her afterlife significant other. She works as an angel for 6 months out of the year doing jobs for the Fates. The Fates call her back to work for "one more little job." Eve agrees, but secretly plots for a way to break her contract with the Fates. Chaos and mayhem ensue when Eve tries to find the quickest solution to the Fates latest problem.

I was lucky enough to get one of the signed limited edition copies from Subterranean Press. There were only 200 made, but they also printed 2000 unsigned trade editions, so you might still have a chance to get a copy of this wonderful edition to the Women of the Otherworld stories.

I listened to the audio of this novella today. It wasn't bad but it isn't something you have to read as part of the series. It's an Eve book set 5 years after Haunted. I would have rather had the book so I could look at the illustrations but I wasn't savvy enough to figure out this was a limited edition. I learned my lesson, I've pre-ordered the next one, Counterfeit Magic (a Paige book featuring Savannah) which Kelley has promised will be even better (and longer).

Eve isn't one of my favorites in this series, but after this little story she does come off better. In the past she has seemed very selfish and not really cared for anyone other than herself and her daughter. With her new job as an Angel for half of the year Eve pushes the boundaries to get her job done. Her bosses, the fates, seem to know this and seem to pander to that with the jobs they give her. Of course they don't want to acknowledge it so all things must be done while all involved ignore it, but it doesn't seem like that is going to happen any more.

Love, Love, Love Kelley Armstrong!
She is my go to author and even though I was late out the gate on reading this one it did not disappoint! Another notch in the Otherworld series. A refreshing side step to the main story line and the development on an otherwise sidekick character is well written. The book is fast paced and chocked full with action * eyebrow wiggle* both types.

If you haven't read any of the other books in the series you can jump in feet first in to this one and not be completely lost. But I highly recommend reading from book one- just to get the whole picture.

I love the Otherworld books so am always happy to ready anything more about the various characters from Kelley Armstrong. Eve Levine is a great character to get a story from.
The reading was ok but the voice was really not right for this book. It sounded more like a nice polite old lady rather than a kickass former dark witch turned angel. It just wasn't strong and confident enough for Eve.

Quick story about an angel who is part demon and assigned to work for the three fates as a kind of private eye/trouble fixing. This girl has one big attitude which makes for an interesting read. Not much depth to the story but a fun read.

Minor novel about Eve? Count me in immediately! Gotta love reading more about her and I don't think I'll ever get bored. It was a fairly non-complicated yet compelling story, though I would've appreciated if there were actual stakes to her wanting to quit. Instead, it never quite gets addressed by the higher-ups, so it remains a dilemma only in her head.

My other major problem is that I just came from Living with the Dead. I read every. single. book. so far, and there was only one hint that there might be more to Jeremy's lineage, in No Humans Involved. And here suddenly it just gets dropped, like it's already been researched and solved in canon???? If this is supposed to be the only background info on Jeremy's mother we ever get, I'll be disappointed, because it's a mystery and answer more deserving than to be hidden away in a side-story.

I listened to the audiobook version of this short story set in the Otherworld series. I was a bit disappointed; for whatever reason I really liked Eve's story in Haunted, but this one felt like a lot of tell and not much actually happening. It came across as problem - snarky asides - I'm very clever and worked out what was wrong - more snarky asides, mostly about kinky pirate costumes - problem solved. I know it's a short story, but I guess it just didn't do it for me. I also wasn't a fan of the narration style - the usual UF husky voice that seemed to convey a sort of superiority/boredom even when action did occur - so that could have had something to do with it.

Eve is one of the characters I never came to love quite as much as I’d hoped in the Otherworld universe. I found her interesting and enjoyed it when she appeared, yet I constantly found myself wanting a little bit more from her. Such was my experience with Angelic. I enjoyed it and liked the way Eve developed in the story, yet it didn’t quite pack the full punch I had been hoping for. It was interesting enough to have me rounding my three-point-five-star rating up, yet it wasn’t quite enough to push Eve up my list of favourite characters in the series.

All in all, another fun read in the series. Fans of Eve are sure to adore this one.

Fast paced, lighter fare

Part of the Otherworld series, this is more of a light hearted romp for Kelley Armstrong. Her various stories/ series each have a different level of light and dark. Eve Levine, while capable of being pitchy black, is shown as someone who is loyal, smart, and tricksy.
Here we have just another investigation in the nether realms. Eve is dead and working for The Fates, while planning a piratical play date with Kris. I do wish there was more bite to this character, but I went with 4 stars because KA is my go-to author. See name - buy book!

A novelette about Eve and Kristof. A week after she’s supposed to have been on vacation the fates send her on another mission dealing with the Jinn. But Eve protests and tired of being an angel determines to get herself fired.

Loved it. It was exciting, complicated and funny.

Fave scene: the Great Library of Alexandria and the final negotiations with the fates.

4 stars. This was much better than Eve's full length book. She works better in small doses like this novella. This series has me in such a chokehold that I'm reading the novellas and side stories which I never usually do but I just can't get enough. This doesn't really add anything to the overall series nor is it a necessary read but I want to consume everything that Armstrong has in this world.

The quickest read

Its a short story. A fun little adventure that follows Eve and her Angel job. I enjoyed it alot. I like how she justifies her actions and shows her morality in a world that stereotypically has little of. And of course the twist is which side, is the one that is lacking in quality traits.

4,75 stars for eve Levine.

A short escape in the otherworld universe. I wish I could have the audiobooks of the whole series here in Germany. But I enjoyed this small mission with eve. As an angel she doesn't always follow the rules.... Ever. Being confronted with her bad behavior and saving the world once again, I wish more than ever I could have the rest of the series.

This is a really good book that deserves 4 Stars.

The premise of the book is great. The characters are so interesting i couldnt get enough. The plot keeps me on my toes. The diffrent mythologys and long lost places are interesting as well. So i cant really explain why the book lost me. I reread the last Part a lot. It was a good ending and i really liked the book though.
