Aiden Nichols is a very concise writer, and Holy Order is more historically focused than other works like it.

Beautiful little history of the Sacrament of Orders from the English Dominican, covering the expanse between the apostolic roots of the ministry and the affirmations of the Second Vatican Council. I've in the past found Fr. Nichol's writing style to be difficult to read, but this book presents the historical data very efficiently and he succeeds in presenting a unity of the Sacrament across all its different manifestations. Recommended for the Catholic who wants to know more about his or her priest and bishop.

Another fine work from Aidan Nichols. Similar in structure and format to "The Holy Eucharist", "Holy Order" traces the origin and development of the Church's threefold ordained ministry of bishop, priest and deacon, from its beginnings in the ministry of Christ and the early Church to present-day understandings of the sacrament.

A reasonable (slightly "progressive") history of the sacrament of holy orders. On the whole, very helpful and well written.
