The lights, the velvet curtain, the spotlight, the graceful dancers—nothing beats going to the ballet for the very first time. In this beautiful picture book, Deanna Caswell and Elizabeth Matthews conspire to recreate all the joy and wonder of the first theatrical experience, for children to relive again and again.

Rhyming couplets narrate a little girl's first trip to the ballet in this simple but elegant picture book. Readers who love ballet should enjoy this one.
A five year old girl goes to her first ballet in this watercolor story. There is strong rhyme and rhythm throughout the story and would be good to read to young children to help develop phonemic awareness. But, there are also some tough vocabulary words that would be hard for young readers to understand like entwined, eager, clutching, murmurs, lilting, dainty, poised, pirouette, jete, arabesque, grand plie, marveling, gaze, mesmerized, enchantment, curtsy, gleam, chatting, and chime. The writing is in poem form and not in complete sentences.
