A blood oath forged in secret. An ancient power rising. Prophecies of death and ruin.
Luka has bound himself to Woda, rik of the Ansu tribe. The seeress had warned against it, but their bond was sealed in blood. Despite the vows he made, Luka is reviled by the Ansu people, for he was born to be their greatest enemy. However, when there are whisperings that a scattered enemy tribe is uniting once more, Luka will have to choose between fate and fealty.
Fraiwa is a divine symbol of the Wana tribe. Sent by the gods to mark a golden age of prosperity, he and his twin sister are beacons of hope for their people. But Fraiwa has a dark secret, and if it is discovered, it may cost him his life.
Wretch knows no other life than servitude. Her master is cruel, and she is scorned by her tribe. With a twisted spine and a misshapen face, Wretch fears that she will never be loved. But the gods are fickle, and there may be more to her fate than she knows.
In this retelling of Norse mythology, the mythic figures are treated as part of the first Germanic tribes of the Nordic Bronze Age. As they fight for wealth, dominance, and survival, their actions shape the stories that will be told for millennia to come.
A solid 4.5 stars. I am blown away. I saw this author on TikTok and my friend started reading it and I figured I'd give it a try. I've never read anything Norse related but I can say I'm on the bandwagon now. This was so beautifully written. The descriptions were great and the characters were spot on. I am in loveeee with Luka and I'm not sure I should be. The story building to the climax was great, even though there was some world building. I can't wait for the second one.
Wulfarik sucks you in right from the beginning. Each of our three main characters have challenges, self-reflection, and personalities that feel real - I truly know each one of them. The political conflicts between the tribes make for problems that at times felt impossible. The dialogue and prose are engaging, funny at times, and unbelievably profound at others. Every person was multi-faceted, and I felt like I was right there with Luka, Fraiwa, and Wretch.
Wretch was my personal favorite character. From her first page, I knew I was Team Wretch all the way. Fraiwa's story was so nuanced, and it made me question what makes someone "good." I went back and forth on Luka's motivations and choices, he really keeps you on your toes!
But in all seriousness. This book was absolutely breathtaking. The writing was SO beautiful, and you can just tell that Marcus put a lot of effort into this book. It was so raw and unreal. This should be a book that people pay good money for. Like I read it on KU, and I’m 100% going to buy a physical copy for my bookshelf. I’m seriously obsessed with this book. The 3 main characters were amazingly written. I LOVED Luka and the complexity of his character. You never really know what you’re going to get with him. Fraiwa was a conundrum, he had a lot of inner battles and fears that ruled his life. I hope he has a second book so I can see what becomes of him. And I am obsessed with Wretch. Her character was perfect, and everything I needed. I don’t want to say to much about her without spoiling anything but she’s an amazing character.
I would 100% recommend this book if you love Norse mythology, battles, blood oaths, scary giants, badass characters, and a great storyline!
I give Wulfarik a solid 4.5/5. The story was captivating from the first page. You're given thorough character development and by the end of the book you feel like you KNOW the characters. You hurt with them and celebrate with them. You mourn with them and want to scream into the book "STOP YOU IDIOT"! There's tension, suspense, and surprise.
If you have any interest in Norse mythology or culture, you'll enjoy this well written novel.
Any issues with the book/story were few and far between and none of it was unforgivable.
I felt like some things were a little over explained to the reader, like details being repeated just a new sentences later in case they were missed. It felt a little repetitive but there weren't a ton of instances so I got over it pretty quick.
I'd love to see a family tree and/or map in later editions! I'm a visual person and I think it would have helped a lot in my early understanding to the tribe/family dynamics.
Overall a great story and I look forward to the next one!
