Splash by Ian Don is based on the 1984 movie of the same name.
It's about a 28 year old man named Allen Bauer who gets dumped by his girlfriend Victoria and ends up dating a mermaid named Madison without even realizing it.
As a huge fan of the film I couldn't resist the urge to buy the book and read it. While overall it's very similar to the movie, there are some parts that are different.
Madison is especially more energetic in the novel and I mean that in multiple ways. She laughs about things with childish innocence more often and is ridiculously much more sexual. In fact she's pretty much a nymphomaniac in the book. Her appearance is also very different compared to the movie. She is described as having bronzed skin, a silvery rainbow tail, plump breasts, and hair that goes past her waist. For me it seems like Ian Don decided to mold Madison into any idealized version rather than stay true to how she is in the movie. He even explicitly describes Madison's shapely form more often than he describes her personality.
The other characters are relatively the same except for Walter Kornbluth donning a thick mustache for whatever reason.

Some parts are better explained than they are in the movie. A good example is when Madison runs away and Allen tries to find her. The part where they meet up makes much more sense than it does in the movie and Allen's pitiful body language upon Madison's return feels more realistic and bittersweet.

Plenty of the quirky lines found in the movie are translated well into the dialogue of the book. Don also faithfully writes the silly antics of the characters into the story with enough witty language sure to bring out a laugh every now and then. However the part where Freddie feigns his Swedish response to the guard is dumbed down in the book unfortunately.

While this book is fine to read without watching the movie, the experience is much more rewarding for fans of the film. I recommend it to mermaid lovers and Splash fans alike.

This movie is pretty great. And this novelization is mostly fun, even if it is almost a word for word adaptation of the movie.

Pretty much a step by step of the movie. A little disappointed that it wasn't a bit more detailed, but I loved the movie so I'm still pretty pleased with this.
Very fast read. Can breeze through it in an afternoon if you have the time.

C’était amusant de lire ce vieux classique romantique, mais aussi très frustrant, car, franchement, les hommes étaient de véritables machistes sexistes!! Maintenant, je crois que je vais revoir le film…

I'm crying! That ending, while the same as the movie, read better than watching it ❤️
