Thirteen-year-old Tim Hunter encounters danger in his own world as an angry visitor from another realm arrives in London seeking vengeance on the young magician just as he is learning new things about his powers.
Carla Jablonski is the author and editor of dozens of best-selling books for teenage and middle-grade readers. She grew up in New York City, where she attended public schools and the Bronx High School of Science. She has a BA in anthropology from Vassar College and an MA from NYU's Gallatin School, an interdisciplinary program for which she combined playwriting, the history of gender issues in 19th Century Circus, and arts administration. "I wanted to write the play, contextualize the play, and learn how to produce the play for my degree," she explains. "I think I may have been the happiest graduate student at NYU -- I SO loved working toward my thesis."
While still in graduate school she supported herself as the editor of The Hardy Boys Mysteries. "When I interviewed for the job they asked me if I'd ever read the Hardy Boys as a kid. 'No way,' I scoffed. 'Those are BOY books! It was Nancy Drew for me!' Luckily my future boss had a sense of humor. She hired me after I promised I'd read the books if I got the job."
She has participated in the renowned Breadloaf Writers' Conference as well as Zoetrope's All-Story highly competitive writing workshop held at Francis Ford Coppella's resort in Belize. She has taught writing for the children's market, as well as "cold-reading" skills for teachers as part of Project:Read. Several of her books have been selected as part of the Accelerated Reader's program.
She continues to work freelance as an editor for publishers and for private clients, even as she writes novels and creates new series. She also has another career (and identity!) as a playwright, an actress, and a trapeze performer. "I try to keep the worlds separate," she explains about her multiple identities. "The different work I do has different audiences, so I want to keep them apart. But they're all me -- they're all ways of expressing what I'm thinking and feeling -- just in different mediums."
Consequences Tim is trying to pych himself up and rehearsing the words to tell Molly he’s a magician (and about all the other stuff that’s happened to him). He thinks maybe if he could prove it to her by doing magic she won’t think he’s insane. So he goes to a lot that he once could go to for privacy. Only when he gets there a boy he knows is there and tells him that it’s not a good place to come anymore. He and his girlfriend went there to be alone and they heard whispers. Then they hear a laugh. Then he hands Timothy an object. It’s a little head that looks like it belonged to an elf that looks like it’s been severed and burned. Scott says he’s not sticking around in a place like that,
Tim recognizes the head as belonging to Tibby an imaginary playmate from when he was a kid. He used to defend him by throwing acorns at the bullies who harassed him from a tree. But then how can he be holding a physical object of something imaginary? Then the setting around him starts to change. Things start to look like they did when he was five. He lays the head at the base of a tree. He starts to think of all his Narls and then as if summoned two appear. Their names are Tanger and Crimple. Crimple is a little feisty at first, but Tangle recognizes him as “The Opener”. They debate over whether they were the ones he knew as a kid. Tim has an answer that solves this. He says that maybe they *were* there when he was a kid and then they went into a “hibernation”. Then they recently woke up when his magic woke up. Then he explains the reason he’s there. Then he notices it’s junky. They say the Wobbly isn’t as distract. The Wobly was something (a bird) that he fed things that were of no use to him (like them).
The Wobbly is now made out of junk (bits of it falling off). It snatches up Tanger. Then he says he’s no longer useful so he’ll destroy him as he did Tibby. Tim told him that’s the *old* way (sawing them and burning them). He says recycling is the new way (finding new ways to use useless things). Tanger convinces The Wobbly to drop him under the “recycling tree” so he can find a new use for himself. As they go back into the tree, Tim learns the lesson that with magic even the smallest things you do (like tying a rag on a stick) have consequences. He isn’t sure what to do with the original Wobbly he finds so he just leaves it where it is and decides to be more careful what he thinks. Then he goes to meet Molly.
Oberion sits at a festival, in his feelings about Titania whose growing more distant from him. He can’t deny that Titania’s grief over her lover Tamlin is more emotion that she’s shown for him in a long time. He considers just leaving and finding something new. Yes, he’ll go on an adventure. He leaves the party and walks into the woods. There’s a marketplace he remembers. But when he gets there, the world isn’t like it was when he last saw it. There’s a unicorn there, but when he gets close it flees. The water is now oily, the air is soody, and the birds are menacing. There’s filth everywhere and everything is made of cold, sharp, metal. Anyone else would have left. Oberon decides to stay. Oberon comes to a ladies defense that’s being harassed by a man. She’s selling globes and gives him one. She tells him to try it and find out if it’s not paradise. He makes no secret he doubts this seriously and she seems to be wounded by this. He says he means no offense and asks her name. She says it’s Gwendolyn. He asks her to remain friends and says he’ll try the globe. The object he realizes is a way to trap souls. She thanks him and offers to take him away from all this.”
When Tim gets to Molly’s, she pulls him off to get ice cream. She makes a stop at her dance school and then invites a friend along. Tim is surprised to see the friend is Marya from Free Country. She says to Molly she didn’t tell him her boyfriend was a magician. Then they both begin to fire questions at him. And if Marya thinks he’s Molly’s boyfriend why didn’t he know about it. Weirdly Tim takes off running. They catch up to him and he tells them to stop and let him think. But they do stop. He’s accidentally frozen them.
Daniel returns back to London in search of Tim and Marya. It’s been days and he can’t find either of them. Plus, London isn’t what it last was. Daniel finds his way to the only familiar place that hasn’t changed (the tunnels). But the water starts to rise and he calls out for help. Reverand Slaggenham appears before him. He says he’s a different man now but how is he still alive?) No surprise, he wants to put him to work He sees the men (silent drones) and thinks no way will be become one of them. But Daniel can admit the Reverand’s demeanor has changed. He says he was going to get Daniel to be his worker, but now he sees he has fire. So he wants him to be his partner. Daniel doesn’t trust him. What exactly is he offering him? What are they extracting? The Reverand says they’ll be extracting happiness. Some people have way to much of it and others not enough. He starts to show him the device but is interrupted by a saboteur. Called “On The Blink”. After this the Reverand tells him his plan of manufacturing mystery and selling it to happy people. When the happiness came trickling out them you’d extract it from them with what he calls “Extracto Apparatus”. He says they’ll use capitalism to advertise it.
There’s a distraction. The unicorn has somehow gotten in. The workers stand there in shock and awe. As the Reverand yells at them to get it. Then he starts to fire at it. The Unicorn takes off. None of the animation hitting it. He starts to curse the beast and Timothy Hunter. This wins Daniel over. Any enemy of Timothy Hunter is a friend of his (or rather ally). He concentrates and yells “Undo” trying Marya first. Nothing happens. While having tea, the Rev. reveals he’s partly made of machinery. Slagginham says they should get right to the matter of killing Timothy. He asks for something of hers and Daniel gives him a lock of her hair. From a screen and the hair, they can see an image of Marya. They find out she’s in London. Then they see her running towards Timothy. Daniel can’t take this and tells him to make it go away. So, he turns off the screen. Slaggingham then shows him a machine that reduce his pain and help him take on Tim. He tells him to step inside and let his spirit out. Daniel doesn’t understand but he does.
Tim is able to unfreeze Marya. Then Molly. As they both comes to terms with the fact that Tim has been claimed and that he’s a magician, the Unicorn shows up again. Moments later they’re engulfed in a black cloud. The Unicorn slumps to the ground. Out of the smoke, Tim sees a boy, Marya cries out to Daniel. Gwendolyn is the one who sucked out the worker's soul. She takes the fairy king to Saggingham. She tries to get him to inspect him, but he’s much too distracted by what’s going on (on) the screen. Ticked she goes to the glob room and retrieves one that looks different. Then she sets him up at a workstation. Then leaves with the thought that now he can see how the other two-thirds live
. Daniel is chocking Tim out with all the soot he’s producing. Molly kicks him in the balls and sends Marya off with the Unicorn. He turns into a whirlwind but Tim’s magic protects them in a space of clean air. Defeated he tells them about Slaggingham and his machine. When they show he what he’s become, he begs them to help change him back. Tim takes a journey through Tim’s memories. The cinders are remains of hope, the black soot suffering, the flames anger. This all equals the pieces of Daniel’s soul clining to him. Tim knows he has to reverse this by going back into the tunnels and getting him back inside the machine. D Aniel offers to take him.
Slagginham finally notices Oberon. He’s surprised to find out he wasn’t happy being a king. He feels sorry for him and offers him a pint of happiness. Oberon wants to know when he’ll get his soul back, but Slagginham just dismisses this and walks away. He figures out what’s off in his potion (balsawood) but then On The Blink appears. He offers to tell him what’s wrong with his invention. They agree on a price and basically OTB says dumb ass you can’t extract emotions out of the air. Then if you could what good would it do. It gave him a longer life sure but what good has it done. HES A MACHINE and can’t swallow it. Then he sees what a fool he was and yanks out his heart. Then he howls and tosses the thing to the floor and stomps the life out of it.
Tim finds Slagginham in the corner shorted out. He tells them never to trust a machine or want to be one. Daniel says he won’t. The Rev tells him he’s proud of him before he dies. Daniel has a change of heart,, decides Slagginham was right all along, and as the water rises he bolts and leaves Tim there to die. Alone Tim starts to explore the tunnels (cursing himself for trusting Daniel). He finds a door that’s locked but On The Blick appears with a flashlight. The water is quickly rising. On The Blick tells him he was the one that put Slagginham out of commission. On the Blink gets the door open for him. Tim thinks he’s familiar and he says he’ll tell him who he is when they get out of danger. He then remembers that when he was a kid, the television went on the blink so he made up a repairman. Tim realizes all his imaginary friends have come back. On The Blink says it’s now his honor to protect him.
Gwendolyn is able to rescue Oberion from drowning with the others. But if she’s expecting gratitude from “Lovey Horns” she doesn’t get it. He’s still under the spell. She tells him they’re going to find his soul. Daniel finds Marya. He confronts her with the rumors they others say that she left because of him. But she says she left because she was ready to grow up and stop playing all the time. She says she’ll never go back. He says he *can’t* go back. He changed for her and now they won’t let him back. He makes a move like he’s going to slap her, but the unicorn lunges at him and removes the soot. He then apologizes to the Unicorn. Then he’s ashamed of what he almost did to Marya. He says it wasn’t him, but Marya says that doesn’t make it better. So, he just decides to go away. And he leaves. After this, Marya begins to dance like crazy.
Tim introduces Molly to On The Blink and then he leaves. Molly scolds Tim a little bit for doing something so reckless and for keeping the fact that he’s a magician from her. Then they go look for Marya and Unicorn. They find them at the school. Marya tells them what happened with Daniel. Then they head off to get ice cream. But then they’re stopped by Gwendolyn who has Oberion. Gwendolyn introduces herself and asks for his help. He recognizes the fairy king. She says his soul is in the globe in his hands and they need to get it out. Amadon appears and then Titania and they’re ANGRY! She’s been looking for Oberon. Gwendolyn explains what’s happening. Titania blames Tim but hut he says he was just asked for his help. Titania demands to have the globe. Tim wonders if she’ll just keep it to have control over Oberon. She apologizes for wanting to kill him and asks his forgiveness. He makes her swear on her name that that he’ll free Oberion's soul. Then she lunges at him. The globe goes flying and shatters. Titania is embarrassed and says she should have destroyed him when she had him. Then she calls him a changeling. Tim is shocked! She powers up her magic to end him (and his friends). Oberon then comes back and stops her. He then calls Gwen and Tim his teachers. Oberon didn’t miss her saying Tim was her child. He then tells her they should return to Faerie.
When they’re alone, he tells Molly about Tamlin. He says that when Titania clams down he might go to Faerie and try to talk to her. Molly tells him he’s doing fine on his own.
My Thoughts As I read this one, I started to reflect on something. Some of this book goes back to Children of the Crusade and a lot of it I forgot because it’s been years since I read that one. But what I thought about was how difficult it was to find the books in this series back then. So, I was lucky if I found a couple of them. Children of the Crustaude was probably the only one I *could* find at the tim which is why this series didn’t get completed. This just makes me think of how much more accessible books have become. Or either it means I’ve just been luckier to *find* them. It might be a little of both. I can definitely see why this series caught my attention. I actually do vaguely remember the struggle of reading the first one (and finding it on one of those sites that let you read it free) and then having to stop because there weren’t any others.
They have places that belong to them, they eat on the regular, they have things, nice things… I think I liked this book the best so far because of how it used creativity to paint certain images in the story. For example Tim’s imaginary friends. The Narls (who were made from tree bark) and the Wobbly (who was made from things Tim didn’t find useful anymore). There was also the monster Daniel became that was covered in pieces of his soul. That was REALLY clever!
There was also a “OH SNAP” moment when you found out Slaggingham was a machine. Didn’t see that coming@ I thought it was interesting (tho slightly ridiculous) that he trying to bottle up happiness. Lol If only that was a thing. But what made even more interesting was (just like the King showed) sometimes happiness doesn’t come from having *things* or staying in a nice place or even being feed regularly. I’ve known plenty of people who’ve had those things and still aren’t truly happy. Tho you think this *would* be true considering some *don’t* have these things, It really is something to think about.
The only thing I really questioned was whose mother Tim *really* was. In the last book, I read it talked about a woman Tamlin was seeing. I was led to believe *this was Tim’s mother. A woman that Titania was jealous of. I don’t doubt Tamlin and Titatia didn’t have *a thing but as for Tim being her kid, Verdict is out on that one. But then why would she yell it in a fit of anger?

Tim's continuing adventures exploring the world of magic. Molly finally finds out that Tim could be one of the most powerful magicians of his time. Tim & Molly meet up with Marya, who returned from Free World to this world. Daniel has followed her and mischief ensues. Tim comes through to save the day once again. Can't wait to read the next installment.
This book was fun, I liked the imagery in it. But yet, I could kind of see why I didn't get any more of these. It kind of feels like it's going nowhere, but that could also be that I think Tim has only just passed the threshold of some plot I don't know of in this book.
