Francesca agreed to marry Calder Hart and then disappeared for a month. She made up a reason for leaving so that she could get away and have some time to herself. When she returned, her sister came to see her and helped her get ready for a party they were invited to that evening. Connie and her husband were now completely reconciled. Joel, her assistant and former pickpocket, is now 11 yrs. old. Rick Bragg was at the party with his wife. Calder Hart was there too. Francesca wore a red dress because she knew that Calder would like it. She also wore her engagement ring on a chain around her neck and had kept it there for the entire month she was gone. She put the ring in her reticule (purse) that evening. She was frightened of Calder's reaction upon seeing her at the party because she hadn't told him she was leaving or that she had returned home. It took a while for Calder to notice that Francesca was at the party. He was upset that she had left and even more upset that she returned and hadn't told him. He noticed that Francesca wasn't wearing her engagement ring and he thought that she had changed her mind about marrying him. Francesca apologized to him for leaving and told him that the engagement was not off. Calder announced to everyone in attendance that they were to be married. Francesca's mother, Julia, was happy but her father, Andrew, was not. Calder agreed to pay a visit to her father the next day. Andrew felt that he should have been consulted before Calder made the announcement. Joel came to the party looking for her. Joel told Francesca that a neighbor needed her help. A thirteen yr. old neighbor, Emily O'Hare, was missing. Francesca first went to see Rick Bragg for help and she looked over some other missing persons reports and found out that another girl of the same age and from the same area had also disappeared. Francesca went to see Emily's parents and Emily's father told her that Emily was at her aunt's house visiting. Francesca soon discovered that Emily was not at her aunt's house and the aunt hadn't even seen the family in over ten years. Emily's father, Tom, had lied. Francesca went and talked to the owner of the store where Emily was headed when she disappeared. He told her that Emily hadn't come to the store that night. Francesca sensed that he was withholding information from her. Francesca was invited to a luncheon at Rick's house with his wife that afternoon. She went to the house and was hesitant to go inside. She talked herself into going in because the luncheon was to raise money for children's education. She went upstairs first to see the orphan children that Rick was had taken in from a previous case. She found out that the children adored Rick's wife Leigh Anne and the younger of the two was calling her momma. The older of the girls wouldn't talk to Francesca. Francesca thought that she had felt abandoned because of her not seeing the girls due to her leaving town for a month and not contacting them. It was just awkward with Rick now raising the girls with Leigh Anne. Rick showed up at the luncheon to talk with Francesca. Francesca was informed that shortly after they left Emily's house, Tom, her father had been murdered. Rick and Francesca went to the school that Deborah Smith had attended when she went missing. They spoke to the girls school teacher and found out that other girls, Rachael Wirkler and Bonnie Cooper, were also missing. There were now four pretty, young girls missing between the ages of 12 and 14. Hart pretended to be a customer and went to one of the bordeaux's in town and asked for a young girl to entertain him. He was turned down but a couple days later he received a note that a young girl had been arranged for him. Francesca had also decided to pretend to be a prostitute and go to work at the same house. Hart came in the day that Francesca was there and Francesca told him where the girl was waiting for him. One of the girls working at the house helped Hart get the girl out and she went to get the police. During the same couple of days, Leigh Anne had been run over by a run away carriage and was in the hospital. One of her legs had been crushed and she was told that she would never walk again. She was very ill and fighting for her life. It took a couple days for them to find out who she was. Rick was at her side as soon as he was told but she was not expected to survive the accident. When she was first missing, Rick's first thought was that she ran away again and he was hurt. He realized then that he loved her and he was ashamed of the way he had been treating her. This all came into his head when she was lying in the hospital. Also, The same guys who had taken the other girls attempted to abduct another girl. She had just moved into town and Joel, Francesca's assistant, was attracted to her. He tried to stop the abduction and they knocked him out and took him too. They threw him into the room with Bridget, but he soon woke up and escaped. He went to the police dept. even though he was extremely nervous. He got pushed around by the cops and hit. He finally got their attention when he asked for Bragg and Ms. Cahill. The policeman decided to check out his story and went to Francesca's home. With the aid of Francesca's family, the police went to the house as directed by Joel. The police were at the house when Francesca and Calder arrived. One of the girls, Emily, was sick and they took her to the hospital. The rest went home. It was soon discovered that the person behind the kidnapping of the girls was the principal of the school they all attended. He was arrested and all involved were charged. The madam of the house where Calder went and where Francesca had pretended to be a whore, could not be found. She had threatened to kill Francesca. A warrant was put out for her arrest. During this entire time, Francesca thought that Calder wanted to call of their wedding. He was trying to back off and giver her time to make sure she wanted to marry him. Francesca did not understand why he seemed so hot and cold in his attitude towards her. Francesca determined that she was falling in love with Hart. Calder told her that he didn't want to live without her and that she was the sunshine in his life. Francesca was thrilled with the comment. Calder was afraid that with Leigh Anne dying, Francesca wouldn't want to marry him. Francesca assured him that she did indeed want to marry Calder Hart.
Francesca Cahill is back at again in book 6 of the series. Battling with her decision to marry Calder when her heart is still tied to Rick. Francesca must put her feelings aside when another young girl goes missing and someone close to the investigation is murdered she must find a way to solve the case while staying true to her promise to Calder and remain passive towards Rick. Brenda Joyce delivers another well written romance novel. By book six I had high hopes that Francesca would see Rick for who he is and realize Calder was what she actually needed however she still acts as a confused oblivious child at times. It really drove me to frustration I understand that the author needed to keep the love triangle alive but it become annoying and predictable.
I remember my slow-growing shock as I realized that rather than continue helplessly pining after very married Rick Bragg, Francesca was in fact going to go for the wealthy and wicked Calder Hart instead. On the one hand, he's bad news, sweetie, no matter how much he might promise to change for your sake. On the other hand...well, to hell with pining.
It’s 1902 in New York City and Francesca is back from a month out of town when she went off by herself to contemplate her romantic predicament. She is in love with Rick, an unhappily married man, but his half-brother Calder is her best friend and she accepted his marriage proposal. But can she go through with a wedding when she loves another man?
There are young, beautiful girls being kidnapped from the streets and sold to brothels and Francesca is determined to find these girls alive. Only this time Calder insists on accompanying her and causing more tension with Rick. This book is more about the heat between Calder and Francesca and it was hot! Calder is one of those bad boys that girls think they can tame, only Francesca doesn’t want to and he doesn’t want to stifle her ambitions either. I love them together.
Initially I struggled a lot as the love triangle bothers me alot. But the problem could be because this is the first book of the series I am reading and as such I did not see how the relationships grow and develop. Bragg's unhealthy relationship with his wife drives me nuts too...he hates her yet lusts after her...but still claims to love Francesca. I am definitely in Camp Calder! I'm not sure if I like the stories enough to read from the beginning, and if each book going forward is going to be about Fran and Calder getting jealous about their past lovers then I'm not interested!
I have been on pins and needles over Calder and Rick. I think this threesome will never be resolved but somehow it's not tiring. Brenda has a magical way of keeping us on the edge with her quick pacing. What a wonderful tango of romance and mystery. Francesca's really done it this time - posing in more ways than one. I still can't tell if it's naivety or she just has really big balls.
Francesca makes her choice and it isn't Rick. They both still have to work together to solve the disappearance of a young girl. With Rick's wife back in the picture..all looks well...but old feelings and jealousy are never far away. Francesca never shy's away from danger she tackles it!
Love where this story is heading. I really enjoyed how the mystery played out and that Francesca worked with Calder. Wishing though that the Mrs. Kennedy and Evan Cahill story line will hury up. On to the next mystery.
I really enjoyed this book although I did think it was a bit far-fetched to have Francesca actually pretend to be a prostitute. The book isn't quite realistic, but it is a fun read. I have to say that I'm rooting for Hart and Francesca.
This triangle with Francesca, Rick and Calder is driving me nuts!! At first I was all for Rick, now it's Calder. I hope it gets solved by the last book!!!
This is a reread for me....one of the many Deadly Series....I loved all these characters than ran through the series, but alas Brenda Joyce has stopped writing. Easy read...great for the beach!
