The field of DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging) has become quite common in the workplace, schools and other locations where leadership either wants to (or sadly, is obligated to) infuse antibias and antiracist policies and practices into day to day operations.

As someone who has long worked in the field of DEIB (even prior to it being known by this acronym), I found this book a source that pulls together everything that one would need to know to do this work well and more importantly, to sustain it. While more useful to those who are entrenched in the work, or interested in pursuing it, Inside Out is still a solid resource for those who are just embarking on this journey.

Hollins, a psychologist by profession, offers practical suggestions that help to frame what is most important in being a DEIB leader. For those who have not engaged in this work previously, she suggests starting by defining your "why" and locating your own positionally - whether you are white or a person of color. While this may seem elementary to those who are well versed in DEIB work, Hollins points out the need to revisit these steps from time to time. Next, she asks DEIB leaders to establish foundational beliefs. She believes that work should be grounded by a framework that embraces four pillars: awareness, knowledge, skills and action/advocacy, and she explains what each encompasses.

The most useful part of the book are the numerous strategies that Hollins proposes for handling situations that can and will go poorly. The author also suggests ways to encourage institutional change. She includes a very useful chapter on establishing Equity teams at work -- I found these recommendations very thorough and well thought out. The appendix of the book contains a chart of antiracist leadership practices, and she invites the reader to self asses in these areas.

I have read (and continue to read) almost every book that comes out that addresses DEIB work, and have found this one to be among the very best.
