About the author

Peter Alexander Haining was an English journalist, author and anthologist who lived and worked in Suffolk. Born in Enfield, Middlesex, he began his career as a reporter in Essex and then moved to London where he worked on a trade magazine before joining the publishing house of New English Library.

Haining achieved the position of Editorial Director before becoming a full time writer in the early Seventies. He edited a large number of anthologies, predominantly of horror and fantasy short stories, wrote non-fiction books on a variety of topics from the Channel Tunnel to Sweeney Todd and also used the pen names "Ric Alexander" and "Richard Peyton" on a number of crime story anthologies. In the Seventies he wrote three novels, including The Hero (1973), which was optioned for filming.

In two controversial books, Haining argued that Sweeney Todd was a real historical figure who committed his crimes around 1800, was tried in December 1801, and was hanged in January 1802. However, other researchers who have tried to verify his citations find nothing in these sources to back Haining's claims. A check of the website Old Bailey at for "Associated Records 1674-1834" for an alleged trial in December 1801 and hanging of Sweeney Todd for January 1802 show no reference; in fact the only murder trial for this period is that of a Governor/Lt Col. Joseph Wall who was hanged 28 January 1802 for killing a Benjamin Armstrong 10 July 1782 in "Goree" Africa and the discharge of a Humphrey White in January 1802. Strong reservations have also been expressed regarding the reliability of another of Haining's influential non-fiction works, The Legend and Bizarre Crimes of Spring Heeled Jack.
He wrote several reference books on Doctor Who, including the 20th anniversary special Doctor Who: A Celebration Two Decades Through Time and Space (1983), and also wrote the definitive study of Sherlock Holmes on the screen, The Television Sherlock Holmes (1991) and several other television tie-ins featuring famous literary characters, including Maigret, Poirot and James Bond. Peter Haining's most recent project was a series of World War Two stories based on extensive research and personal interviews: The Jail That Went To Sea (2003), The Mystery of Rommel's Gold (2004), Where The Eagle Landed (2004), The Chianti Raiders (2005) and The Banzai Hunters (2007).

He won the British Fantasy Awards Karl Edward Wagner Award in 2001.

Lo que nos cuenta. El libro Cronopaisajes (publicación original: Timescapes, 1997) es una antología de trabajos breves, con un nombre que homenajea la famosa novela de Gregory Benford Cronopaisaje, que tratan el viaje en el tiempo desde distintas perspectivas, con Peter Haining y Miquel Barceló como antologístas (porque el segundo añade un par de trabajos al original del primero), estructurados en tres grupos generales que abordan el regreso al presente, los viajes al pasado y la historia del futuro, respectivamente, con sentido narrativo aunque no traten exactamente esos conceptos.

Cronopaisajes contiene una extensa selección de relatos cortos que tienen como eje principal los viajes a través del tiempo, agrupados bajo tres categorías: Regreso al presente- Viajes al pasado- Historia del futuro. La calidad media de los relatos me pareció muy buena, aunque algunos relatos han quedado algo opacados por el paso del tiempo, pero a los que como yo sean amantes de paradojas temporales este libro no los va a decepcionar, más teniendo en cuenta que algunos de los autores incluidos son: Philip Dick, H. G. Wells, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, J. B. Priestley y otros grandes escritores del género.

One of the better time travel compilations, with most of the stories being top notch examples of the genre. A minority just didn't do it for me but that is the beauty of such collections, as we all get something that others might not see. Preferred the present and past tales, not so much the future trips.

He llegit moltes reviews d'aquesta obra, en diversos idiomes, en les que es diu que els relats són decepcionants, que la qualitat no està a l'altura dels noms que firmen els relats.
Discrepo enormement.
Els relats "The Men Who Murdered Mohammed", d'Alfred Bester i " '—All You Zombies—' ", de Robert A. Henlein, per mencionar-ne només alguns, són absolutes obres mestres.
La d'en Heinlein és potser la millor historia de viatges en el temps que he llegit mai i va ser adaptada al cinema a la pel·líula "Predestination".
Totalment recomenable. Ciència-ficció com ha de ser, per pensar, wibbly-wobbly, evadir-se de la realitat en ocasions i critica social en altres ocasions. Chapeau.

Como todas las compilaciones de cuentos de diferentes autores, Cronopaisajes adolece de una gran falta de homogeneidad en cuanto a su calidad literaria. Hay cuentos muy buenos (el último, de Martín Amis, por ejemplo) y otros que no lo son tanto. En general, no obstante, si sientes interés por el tema de los viajes en el tiempo, es un libro que debes leer.

COMENTARIO:

Poco que decir. Como en casi todos estas recopilaciones de cuentos o narraciones, unos están bien y otros no tan bien. En general resulta una colección de narraciones cortas bastante entretenida y con autores consagrados de la ciencia ficción.

Para pasar el rato no está mal.

Estupenda selección de relatos sobre viajes en el tiempo. Desde relatos de la época de H.G. Wells y su maquina del tiempo (autor del que también se incluye un relato), hasta muestras mas actuales. Muy de agradecer también la presentación de cada relato, reseñando la época en que fué escrito y quien es su autor.

Hay algún relato de una calidad algo inferior, pero es algo inevitable en toda selección supongo. En general es una lectura rápida, muy divertida y con grandes ideas.

Why this anthology isn't registered here under its original English title is beyond me. Anyhoo...the stories are hit and miss...they range from the actually pretty good, to interesting if flawed to downright "why would anyone publish this". I expected more from this book but I suppose in the end it was worth getting through, just not as enjoyable as I would have liked it to be.

A must possess for fanatics of Time Machines; Inter Stellar explorations and Spatial fantasies!
