Reasonable Exercises for Seniors and the Sedentary
I’ve reviewed a fair number of exercise books written by independent publishers and authors, and this is one of the better ones I’ve seen. What makes it good? It not only has multiple well-illustrated short workout routines that most seniors could reasonably do, but it also has extras like single-page laminable routine summaries for each workout, a basic workout log, videos linked from the text that show proper exercise technique for each workout…and even a free downloadable audiobook that you can use to cue you for the workouts (especially helpful for the HIIT routines). While I wasn’t able to check out the audiobook as it was not available for early reviewers, I liked the other “goodies” this author offered. Types of routines offered include cardio HIIT (2 days), cardio boxing, core (2 days), back, and yoga. The exercises, for the most part, aren’t difficult, but I love that he included videos so you could have the proper form and execution if the illustrations aren’t enough. (And I definitely recommend you check out the videos at least once anyway to make sure you’re doing the exercises right.) The illustrations and instructions are better than most I’ve seen in independently published exercise books, but videos really get the exercises across quickly. The book has two levels of workouts, one set of seven workouts to start off with and another you can expect to progress to if you do the beginner level regularly (like adding more reps or having more “workout” time for the HIIT exercises). Not all exercises will be appropriate for everyone, so if you have a bad back or bad knees, you will not want to try some or will need to modify them. But most seniors could do most of them. I’m approaching senior status and have a mostly sedentary job. I will not only use these as workouts but will also add them to my workday to move and stretch my body while at work. This book is worth checking out for seniors, those with balance issues, and those who are often confined to a desk at work.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I'm six weeks post rotator cuff surgery and, obviously, cannot do these exercises at this time. But I have read the book and anxious to be able to get started. This book doesn't talk down to me, the movements appear to be something I can attempt. I'm 72 and ready to feel better and have more energy.
