Anwalt der Bösen

Rate this book

Kaplan has been the lawyer of victims of the National Socialist Underground, but also of the neo-fascist who executed Hessian politician Lübcke in 2019 and of Turkish president Erdogan in his trial against German comedian Jan Böhmermann. In his memoir, he tells the story of his upbringing as the child of Turkish immigrants and as a defense lawyer who upholds the justice system by representing all kinds of people before a court - in his case, the spectrum is extreme, as pointed out above.

It is inherent to the genre that what he says here is often highly subjective, and I can't judge what he leaves out and how others who were part of the proceedings would describe what happened in the courtroom. It also sounds like Kaplan's reputation as a rather vain dude is justified. But, and this is a big BUT: He is 100% correct that in a functioning justice system in a democracy, even the obvious villains do deserve a fair trial, so representing criminals means upholding a democratic society. I would also have liked to hear more of his thoughts on punitive vs. rehabilitative justice, which is a very tricky subject.

All in all, rather interesting for everyone interested in the law, although the editor could have improved the pacing and added more context by asking the author (who, as a lawyer, is used to work with language, but to a different effect) the right questions.
