In a Nutshell: A twisty collection of short stories in conversational Hindi. A mixed bag for me.
This anthology has forty flash-fiction–length stories, most of which have a twist at the end. The stories are quite dark, ranging from crimes, psych suspense, thrillers and low horror.
‘Paasa Palat’ is somewhat like turning the tables or changing the tide. Thus, in each story, you have the ‘paasa palat’ happening at the end. Sometimes, it works well; at times, it feels predictable and/or farfetched.
One interesting trivia is that every story is titled after a Bollywood crime movie, and arranged in the order of the movie’s release year. I discovered the first bit while reading the collection; the second was revealed to me by the author.
Most of these stories are set in the urban locale of Mumbai. So the Hindi you get herein is not the formal polished Hindi of North & Central India. The stories are in conversational Hindi (which is fine), but contains many English words that seem anomalous in a Hindi work. Words like ‘white’ and ‘quit’, and even worse - ‘crotch’, look weird when they pop up in Hindi fiction in the Devanagari script. After all, they do have Hindi equivalents, then why the English words? Well, I suppose I should be grateful that it isn’t in Bambaiya Hindi – that would have been comical! But if you pick up this collection to get a genuine Hindi experience, you will be dissatisfied.
Another thing that bugged me was that many of the stories were a part of ’Chasing Nirvana’, an English flash fiction collection by the same author. I had read the English work a couple of years ago, so when the Hindi stories started looking familiar, it took me some time to work out the reason why I kept getting the feeling of déjà vu. I think this took away greatly from my experience, because what should have been surprise twists were already known to me.
(Note: On seeing my feedback, the author clarified to me that Chasing Nirvana has since been revamped, and there are no more any common stories between the two collections. But as I had read the original version, my experience stands.)
As always, I rated the stories individually, but most of them fell in the mid-range for me. (My favourites were ‘Gupt’, ‘Sangharsh’, and ‘Kaun’.) I had enjoyed ‘Chasing Nirvana’ far more, possibly also because I can process better in English. So the language also had a role to play in my relative dissatisfaction with this work.
All in all, a decent collection, and one that I might have enjoyed more had I not already read the English version.
Recommended to Hindi short fiction lovers who won’t fuss about modernised language.
Do note that this isn’t for children; the content makes it suitable only for adults.
(The adult content looked so odd to my eyes because I've never read anything except shudh saaf-suthri desi kahaniyan in Hindi fiction. 😂)

यह पुस्तक चालीस कहानियों का संग्रह है। ये कहानियां मुख्य रूप से मुंबई गोवा के आसपास फैली हुई हैं। छोटे-छोटे अपराधों से शुरू होकर इन कहानियों का ट्रैक भयानक अपराधों, मानसिक समस्याओं और फंतासी/अपसामान्य कहानियों की ओर बढ़ता है।
संग्रह अच्छा है लेकिन ये पसंद आया -
1. पासा पलट : मुंबई लोकल ट्रेनों में कहानियों के लिए एक अलग माहौल और अलग अहसास होता है। इस संग्रह की पहली कहानी एक पुरानी मुलाकात के लिए पॉकेटमार के इंतजार और उसके खोए हुए उपहार की है।
2. खलनायक : इस कहानी में व्यंग्यात्मक स्पर्श है। हम जानते हैं कि धूम्रपान जानलेवा है लेकिन इस कहानी में एक मार्लबोरो जो जीवन भर के लिए उसका साथी था, अंत में उसे बेरेटा 92 से बचाता है।
3. अग्नि साक्षी : यह एकमात्र कहानी है जिसने मेरा दिल तोड़ा है। समझ नहीं आता गलती के लिए किसे दोषी ठहराया जाए- सालों तक उसकी प्रताड़ना सहने वाली एक वफ़ादार पत्नी या वह पुलिस वाला जिसने किसी पुरुष को सिर्फ इसलिए बलात्कारी नहीं माना कि वह पीड़िता का पति था.
4. गुप्त : यह कहानी एक पिता का अपनी राजकुमारी के नाम पत्र है। उसे उस अपराध के लिए जेल में डाल दिया गया है जो उसने अपनी राजकुमारी को उसके ही परिवार से बचाने के लिए किया था। यदि आपका घर ही सुरक्षित स्थान नहीं है तो आप क्या करेंगे?
5. फ़िदा : हर रिश्ता चाहे दोस्ती हो, प्यार हो या शादी, सभी एक नींव वफादारी में खड़े होते हैं। इस कहानी में प्रेमी ने जितना झेला उससे ज्यादा धोखा देने की कोशिश की।
6. शैतान : यह कहानी एक रॉकस्टार की मौत की कहानी है। लेकिन यह मुझे उस प्रतिभाशाली अभिनेता की याद दिलाता है जिसे हमने कुछ समय पहले खो दिया था।
Rating : 4.4/5

Rafa's 'Paasa Palat' is an assortment of forty stories with turns that will shock you. These accounts will go on you on an outing to an alternate world without causing you any damage. I truly cherished the manner in which creator has communicated everything. It's an exceptionally intriguing book which you ought to go for.
The writer has truly figured out how to draw in the perusers in the rush and tension of the accounts. The best story as indicated by me was Gumnaam. It gave me the energy that no other could, albeit every story brings something remarkable to the table.
The storylines will keep you intrigued and charmed. Organized all through the book is the way the portrayal advances. The writer utilizes a point by point composing style. The sections are coordinated actually.

📌 It is a Hindi edition, and the language used is pretty lucid so that anyone can up the plot easily.
📌 Most of the stories are quite thrilling and some even contain relevant messages.
📌 The title of the stories is rightly chosen and interesting enough.
📌 Overall, it is a short and engrossing read that you can easily finish within a few hours.
📌 It would be especially helpful to get out of a reading slump.
📌 I would recommend this to Hindi short story readers.
