Nearly 20 years after publication, I still find this to be a very fine overview of dual systems work in various domains of cognitive science, philosophy of mind, decision theory, and educational and developmental psychology. The key lesson I took from this is that fascinating parallels notwithstanding, researchers in these fields are not all on the same page as to what dual process/dual systems are all about.
There has been a bit of coalescence since 2007, mainly because of the huge influence of Kahneman Daniel and his 2011 book Thinking, Fast and Slow. But while maybe half of the authors in this book understand dual process approaches in a way that is broadly consistent with Kahneman, the outliers are worth thinking about. Unlike Thinking, Fast and Slow, this is not really a book that opens itself up to casual readers, but the chapter authors have done a good job of making their ideas accessible to readers from other academic disciplines.
