James "Jamie" Van Ryan is the greatest porn star who has ever lived. The objectively perfect body with the objectively perfect face. Everyone wants him, everyone wants to be him, and the powerful want to own him. When one of the richest royals in all the galaxy wants to marry him, Van Ryan finds himself on the farthest edge of known space, embroiled in political intrigue, and falling in love with a revolutionary and his cause. Which side will he choose
James Van Ryan is a very popular consort/porn star. He will tell his story of how his life as a young boy was dysfunctional, abusive and how he became famous in the sex industry. He has arrived at the Ganymede station to connect with a flight that will take him out of the solar system. Traveling far into space, he will find himself deep below the ocean.
General Karzen Olver is the head of the 53rd State American Empire. When his planet was destroyed by Earth he and his family tried to escape. Prince Olver as a young man, piloted an armor for the first time but his family did not survive. He floated in space and avoided Earths drones. When the attack was finally over, he returned to his planet and met a Faction that did not agree with his father. His father believed in the humanity of the Earth forces. The Faction hid deep under the ocean and he joined them. The Faction felt legitimized with Prince Olver as their leader.
Of course, Olver is charming, handsome and Jamie is now captivated by him. Even though the arrangement is odd there will never be love. The few times Jamie has been able to enter the city, it always seems strange. The streets are empty of its inhabitants and he and Olver are always protected by guards.
Then a strange event takes place, Jamie is whisked away by a mysterious man known as Sylas. Sylas was once body guard to Olver and he now has a dislike of Olver. Jamie follows him deep into the yeast factory tunnels. He is introduced to a young man who looks like Olver. Salil looks to be fifteen years old, but is only decanted a year ago, he is a clone. It’s strange but Jamie feels a touch of jealousy as he thinks of Sylas as the father figure he never had. Jamie also hears the story of Falma and the disappearance of Aleer, her ten year old son. Sylas opens Jamies’ mind to the cruelty of Olver. Jamie will later find Olver building a mech army. The more he is with Sylas, Jamie will learn of the part he is to play in the rebellion. What will happen to Sylas and will Jamie have the strength to carry out his part?
I really had to step away and give “The Consort” some deep thought. J. Warren presents the story from each characters perspective. The story is told in sections from each character: James Van Ryan, Olver, Sylas, and an unknown, who tells of the “coach” connection.
The world building, armors, ships, mechs (colossal sentry), cloning, mobile armor suits, liquid that hugs the body and so much more create a very different sci-fi world. The description of the under world dome that is surrounded by the ocean and it’s creatures is amazing. The novel also brings out the idea that working in the sex industry is common place in the future. It also expresses James’ feelings towards Earth and this new world he now lives in. James also finds himself in a confused state with his feelings between Olver and Sylas.
This is a first time read for me by J. Warren and I was immersed in the “The Consort”from the start. The story contains: action, suspense, danger and tragedy in this strange world. As I got further into the novel, I had the feeling that something was off and I thought I knew how the story would end, but I was totally surprised. This was a a weird but intriguing sci-fi novel, with an unbelievable and twisted ending, that I did not see coming.
There are no scene breaks in this. Everything just runs together. Which was confusing right from the get go. At the terminal, for instance, the MC invites a fan to go somewhere private with him and the next line is a woman escorting him onto his space flight. At first I thought there where lines missing, not realizing that the scene had just ended.
The first 6% of this was describing the flight and shuttle. Then there’s a good chunk describing his room and his bath.
Olver, when he meets him, is described in two sentences, one of which describes his outfit. And then their first meal together focuses on the food versus them. Same as when they go to the shops. Aren’t you at all curious about this man who paid to bring you across the galaxy to be his consort?
The timeline jumps between present and past, and I do hate a jumping timeline.
And I admit, I was a bit let down by how un-alien everything is. Olver is described as sounding British, he has books from Earth authors (Verne), and everything seems fashioned aftern Earth… even though he was far enough from Earth that the MC went into cryosleep to get there.
It’s by no means awful, but it’s piqued zero percent of my interest.
