Song For A Lost Kingdom #2

Song for a Lost Kingdom: Love Never Surrenders

Rate this book

“One of those rare stories that seem to make you part of the story, not just a reader. The combination of history, intrigue, drama and romance, not to mention time travel... awesome!!" - Raewynn Osborne

Music is not bound by time...

And Adeena Stuart is not bound by anything that will stop her from saving the man she’s fallen in love with, even though he’s been dead for almost three hundred years.

In Book II of the Song for a Lost Kingdom trilogy, her music provides the portal to to James Drummond who is fighting along side Prince Charles Edward Stuart in the 1746 Jacobite uprising. Though their cause is doomed, and James is destined to die shortly after the Battle of Culloden, Adeena’s determination never wavers.

Can she save him and change the future of her own family, forever intertwined with the illigetimate son he is destined to leave behind?

While war rages in 1746, Adeena’s friends and families are equally determined to return her to 2019 before the expanding growth in her head becomes fatal and they lose her forever.

Throughout it all, the music sweeps across those in both the past and present in this page-turning novel of history, romance and science fiction.

Love never surrenders, even in the most dire of circumstances.

“This story grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go!” - Marti Panikkar

“Adeena undergoes what seems more like a genuine experience.  It takes medical and psychological impact into consideration. Anyone can have an idea, but in the hands of a superior writer, a concept can be explored more completely with greater depth. That's what Steve Moretti has done.” - Sarita Talmidah

“So, I’m back from my long weekend (went and got in some screen-free backpacking time!) and throughout the duration of the trip, my mind kept wondering back to this narrative. It’s captured my imagination!” - Emily Knott

“Addictive and brilliant! I was pulled into the lives of these complex characters and by the end became fully invested in their plights. I absolutely loved the ending and can not wait to see how this new situation progresses.” - Nevine Ramirez

This book is so underrated.

When I read Book 1, I was so fascinated by the concept of music connecting time. Music have been used in fictional stories so many times but not like this though this concept reminded me of an Asian (Korean or Japanese) teen movie where the girl went to the future and she plays piano. I forgot the title because I’ve watched a long time ago, so if any of you find this familiar, please tell me the title. but I remember liking it the same way I liked Adeena’s story. And I’m so glad that even though music kind of takes a back seat in book 2, it’s still present and plays a big role in the story.
Book 2 focuses in Adeena (or Katharine) and James’ love story, the danger of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising, and the study and struggle of Adeena’s family in the present time to wake her up. I’m no lover of history but I applaud the author for writing such a book that made me want to read more about this part of history. Even though the story is fiction, this past of history is not and I can only imagine the research the author made for this novel. I like how the Jacobite rebellion was executed, presenting danger and suspense that made me really, really hooked because I can’t wait to see what will happen to James. Afterall, history said he died so I’m excited to see what difference would Adeena make to change the history and keep the love her life alive.

As for the characters, I still can’t find Adeena relatable which is the reason why I can’t rate this book a perfect 5-star. I can’t really explain it but I can’t really like Adeena completely, like something is missing in her character, I just can’t name what. But I do love her tenacity to save James. She’s willing to travel through times and set aside the life she’s accustomed to just for her love. I like that quality of hers. James, on the other hand, is the typical valiant hero you can’t help but like and wish that he stays alive, NO MATTER WHAT. I also like how the author handled the side characters. I like it that they were given an equal parts and privileges as the main protagonists. Even though the protagonists are in 1745, equal amount of things are happening in present time with Adeena’s parents and friends and others. It’s almost like there’s no side characters which is really amazing. That said, the side plot regarding the science behind Adeena’s condition, is an interesting addition to the story.

Finally, I want to say that for me, the main strength of this novel is still the music. The mystery behind the music connecting Adeena and Katharine. I want answers which is the main motivator why I keep swiping the screen of my tablet and keep reading. In my review of book 1, I said it was page-turner and I can say the same thing in book 2. The author really made it possible to keep the mystery alive till the end. And now I can’t wait for book 3.

I loved Song for a Lost Kingdom (book 1), but it ended on a cliffhanger. I’ve been dying to know what happened, and I was pumped when the opportunity to read Book 2 presented itself. I had so many questions and couldn’t wait to dive in.

Book 2 answered my questions but gave me more to ponder. It starts off immediately where book 1 left off. Adeena has been brought out of her coma. The time travel in this novel is really compelling. It’s clear Steve Moreitti did his research and that really helped this feel authentic. I did miss music being more center stage in this novel because I think that was one of the compelling aspects of book 1.

I think the returning characters are growing, which is always wonderful to see in book 2. Adeena grew on me as her character gained more insight and depth.

The ending irked me a little. Another cliffhanger and unfortunately, I think this book falls pray to the middle book syndrome a bit. On the plus side, the cliffhanger does make me want to read book 3, and I have a feeling that will be another awesomely researched novel. I recommend checking this series out.

Wonderful 18th century period story with a romantic time travel twist. Modern day musician Adeena falls into a coma and wakes up as Katharine, a woman embroiled in a war between Britain and Scotland. Katherine/Adeena is struggling to save her true love from death in the coming slaughter of the Battle of Culloden. Can Katharine alter history? Can the neurosurgeons save Adeena?
This story grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go! I received an eARC with no strings attached.

When I reviewed the first Song For A Lost Kingdom novel, I said that it might be described as Outlander with music. Adeena Stuart, the time traveling protagonist, is a musician whose main concern in both 21st century Canada and 18th century Scotland is her music. This is what I loved most about Song For A Lost Kingdom #1. I was looking forward to reading more about this singer/cellist in the Song For A Lost Kingdom #2 ARC that I received for free from the author.

Music is still present in the life of protagonist Adeena Stuart, but it has receded into the background as she has become much more involved in a romantic relationship with 18th century Jacobite James Drummond.

The most interesting and original aspect of this time travel fantasy is the 21st century effort by Adeena's doctors to explain what was happening to her scientifically by consulting with experts in the relatively new discipline of epigenetics. Other readers may disagree with me, but my feeling is that Adeena's time travel is paranormal, and not explainable by current science. Yet the content dealing with epigenetics in this book was absolutely fascinating.

Despite having several different focuses, Steve Moretti didn't lose the thread of the plot. There were no unnecessary digressions. Everything was relevant. All the characters had understandable motivations even if they weren't likable.

The only thing that disappointed me about Song For A Lost Kingdom #2 is the cliffhanger ending. I have always believed that a well-written piece of fiction like this one doesn't need to emotionally manipulate readers into buying the next book.

This was second book in the series. The first dealt with how Adeena, on playing the Duncan Cello, traveled to the past and became Katharine. The story had been left with a cliffhanger where Adeena fell into a deep coma.

Book 2 showed me the depths of what happened to both of them. Adeena was in coma but had travelled to the eighteenth century to be with James and to save his life. In the 21st century, doctors along with her parents tried various techniques to bring Adeena out of her coma and to save her life. A complex tale.

My second book by author Steve Moretti, I found the tale seeped more in historical facts. It was endearing and challenging to see how Adeena traversed those age and times where women didn’t have all the rights and freedom. Her love kept her strong. Music played the binding factor, keeping both her worlds intact. Adeena had to soon decide what her fate was.

It was obvious that the author has written this story after doing plentiful research. The war was well described. Love and duty were well shown in those difficult times. The characters in the modern times, parents and friends of Adeena, had their own story happening in the background. I loved the way her parents stood by her, trying to get her back.

Then those niggles emerged, too complicated a plot with the ending being confusing. The doc in me wasn’t convinced about the medical condition emerging. Here I felt the book concentrated too much on the 18th century war, rather than emotions.

Overall, a tapestry of history and drama was weaved with the contemporary life to make this a complex tale which was a promising read.

One of the best time travel books I've read in a while. This is the continuing story of Adeena and her adventures in the 18th century along with the stories of her family and friends in the 21st century who are desperately trying to get her back. The author has done his homework both on the history between Scotland and England in the 18th century and on medical procedures and it shows in his writing. The story and lead characters are captivating, the world building is excellent and the supporting characters, Adeena's friends and family, add so much to the story. I strongly recommend this book.

I was given an early copy of the script for review and I'm so glad I got it.
I like the premise of this book, the series. It's a fascinating concept which Steve Moretti has brought to life in a good story. There are two main characters, Adeena and James, and a cast of characters to cheer for and others you just wish to boo. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep it interesting with possible hints of what is to come. This book is a good read and I definitely recommend it.

Totally enthralled by these books. This is the second book in this series and the story just keeps getting better and better. We are moved through time and space by the wonderfully evocative music written by Katherine/Adeena. In the present Adeena is in a coma, fighting for her life, while Katherine is in Scotland supporting the Jacobites. How can they survive and who will end up where. Put aside time to read these books, you won’t be able to stop reading till the end. Highly recommend..

Set aside a weekend for this well-written romance with heart-stopping twists which shifts between 1745 and 2019. I read an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.

It is best to read the first book before starting this one because the story continues where the previous one stopped. I didn't and I could still follow the story but it would have been easier to know the things that happened before and the backgrounds of certain storylines. It's not easy to write a short resume about this book because there are so many things, issues and ideas that come together in this story. So I give it a try. Aleena a gifted cello player is allowed to play on an antique instrument and finds herself 200 years into the past. In Scotland during the uprising of Bonnie Prince Charles. Aleena and James Drummond, one of the prince's closest and most loyal friends, fall madly in love with each other (don't worry it's not a soppy love story) and she gets more and more involved with the war. Knowing the disastrous outcome of the uprising and the fact that her beloved will die not long after Culloden, she searches a way to save him as well as the common soldiers. But can she change the future? How? And how much of it? At the same time, in 2019 Aleena's in a deep coma with a mysterious tumour growing in her brain. Her parents and friends will try everything to save her and get her back.
So this is, of course, an impossible love story between 2 young people from different centuries. But it's also a story about desperate and crazy heroism in a civil war. A war that breaks down families as siblings choose for the opposite sides in the conflict, something that's still happening today. But it also touches some very serious topics as when is the right time to talk about organ donation? How much of the medical procedures in research are plain experiments and how far will you let them go?
I have 1 criticism though and that's the total lack of culture shock from a modern Canadian girl that's transplanted to 1745. The complete absence of technology and even the slightest comforts as steam or even gas. The privileged leisurely life of an aristocrat back then was far less comfortable than a labourer's today. The only reference to the differences is made when she regrets not being able to send an Instagram photo of her feet washing.
I received a free arc from the author and this is my honest review.

My compliments to the author to bring back the pain of "Outlander" and all that Bonnie Prince Charlie pathos, with a different slant -- we got so caught up in that story when it was published, that the events still are fresh in my mind. And using the same technique (being in two centuries simultaneously) but set up differently was an interesting slant. Also I wonder if all the scientific stuff in the hospital could really be applied to a human? Anyway, couldn't put it down, and didn't get much sleep, but I really liked some of the characters, and have to say, over all, I really don't like mean people.

I received a free copy of this novel by Book Siren, any and all opinions and commentary are my own and in no way reflect the author, Book Siren or any other reviewers. This book is the first in a trilogy with a prequel added, it involves time-travel, historical events, and a bit of romance. As being a part of series, it does end with a cliff-hanger and unanswered questions. All and all a good book.

I don’t know what to say about this book. The premise was awesome to begin with, an interesting twist on time travel. Modern day Adeena musician goes back in time via an enchanted cello and musical score. The story tries to stop the battle of Culloden, with future knowledge. This kind of sounds like Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander Series.

Add the plot twist that Adeena and Katherine switch bodies, but both get pregnant. Only Adeena is doing the deed. Not sure if I want to finish the series, even though the actual writing of the book is well done. Some leaps in the book can lose a reader and I think the author might have done it with this book.

I truly felt like I was in this book as perhaps a chamber maid observing behind a curtain. I felt like I was there on the horse crossing the Forge with them it was a very exhilarating book . I was so excited there were more books after number one and now that I finished with this; I can’t wait to read the third one . This author has really got me , so I’ll definitely be following him no matter what he writes . He really is a good writer and he’s really RE sparked my interest in history. I’ve always liked history but I find myself when I’m not reading one of his books or somebody else’s books , that I am researching different things with history. I’m picking up literature or going on the Internet and just researching different things. It has been interesting and it’s definitely been an educational ride for me anyway.

Wild time travel ride through Scottish history

There was awful lot of military history leading up tho the massacre at Culloden, where Bonnie Prince Charlie lost his chance of ever regaining the English throne for his father. He was too young, inexperienced and sure of himself to listen to good advice, and thousands of other men paid the price with their lives. It would have helped to have a map of Scotland and even more to have visited.

Meanwhile, the mind of a beautiful young cellist connects with her ancestor, sho wrote the music score she has been hearing in her head and struggling to finish since she was a child. In Katherine's body, Adeena manages to change some bits of history to benefit her family, accepting the charge given to her by her dying grandmother, who was thought by some to be crazy.

This is an historical fiction novella. It is yo follow the prequil so you can understand the characters but can be a stand alone book. She just stops and gives you enough to get excited. It is a time travel book. The storyline is well developed with the intro to believable and interesting characters, so you get to know the characters before the series. Bethany Mason and Tom Mc Lean do a great job with audible and maintain your interest. I enjoyed this book.

Good but not as good as the other book and prequel.

I was a little disappointed in this book. The prequel and book 1 were better. I think this one had too many offshoots and dwelled on the fighting too much. I understand that the battles were an Intricate part of the story. The twist at the last was a very nice touch. And, don’t get me wrong, I would recommend this book.

This is my honest review.

Song for a Lost Kingdom book 2 continues the entertaining series about a girl torn between two time periods joined by a cello. There is a lot going on in this story both in the past and in the present and it will be interesting to see how the final book ties everything up. I do wish the last audiobook was available now, as I would like to finish the series.

The audiobooks include both a male and a female narrator as well as music and other effects. They are quite a production.
