Venturing into the unknown means pushing the limits of everything thought possible.

10 years ago, the Ark II departed on a long journey through interstellar space, but shortly after they reached their destination, all communications ceased. All attempts to re-establish contact have failed.

Utilizing prototypical FTL technology that he invented, one brave man will lead a small expedition into the unknown to discover the colony’s fate.

The characters in this series have become like family which adds to my enjoyment. All the books in the series are great. One of the things I have noticed is the evolution of the author as a writer. Each book improves in the crispness of writing style and straight forward plot development which I really appreciate in space opera. Cudos to Ken. Well done. Yeah I know I'm gushing.

I enjoyed this book, but I don't understand why there had to be such giant holes in the plot. Certainly, Lozito himself recognized the flaws in the plot. No-one reading this could possibly not recognize it. Why is it left this way? I don't know how to solve the plot problems, but they are certainly solvable. It shouldn't be my problem. Lozito and/or his editor should have handled this. Unfortunately, I have to dock a star. Oh yes...one more thing. The sub-plot with Conner's son was unnecessary filler in an already short book. It was a complete waste of time. This last question I have is one that may have been answered in the book and I just missed it. I'm not sure. Why would the colony investigate that planet for colonization if humans couldn't breath the air? I guess there is a lot wrong with this book, but if you are on book 13, its not like you're going to skip it.

Different dangers to handle

While we still see the familiar faces of the more senior CDF, Noah, Sean along with the usual cast of new players are reaching the point of taking the reins, but also doing a fine job in the process!

A new adventure

FTL. A new setting. New problems. New solutions.

I'll be frank, I finished this book in under a day, under 2 hours really. That's how much I could afford to skip. Skimming through, speed reading because honestly - you'll miss nothing of importance - unless you consider the romance, forced humour and overly dramatic conversations to be important.

Noah. Once again let's me down as a character. He's a whiney child and nothing more. Ill-suited in being a protagonist. A support character at best. He is poorly written and makes the reader want to slap him a few times. Or maybe he is well-written if he brings out such annoyance. Who knows. Granted, he makes a few good decisions, but to make him Captain of a vessel? Shouldn't have been done. Kara, also, the whole episode of her being injured and recovering in record time. Well, what was that even for? Emotional content? I'd be very surprised if more than ten people felt emotionally engrossed in that whole dilemma. Civvies don't make good leaders here. Not at all.

Sean is around, but he's really just along for the ride. The ending redeems the story, as well as the communication with the planetary residents.

I suppose this story was concocted just to establish the FTL drive.

Finally, I get caught up so I can read the next book.

This series is a long one, but it's still very good. We've grown a lot since the first book which saw ship full of colonist escaping Earth for a new life. They found that new life on New Earth. It hasn't been easy and this was supposed to be a civilian led expedition, but thank goodness there was some inadvertent military leadership included.

Connor Gates was part of a special ops team that was caught on the colony ship when it left the Solar System. He and his team were not supposed to be going on the trip, yet they did even though they had left family on Earth who had no idea what had happen to them. Connor, especially, left a wife and young son whom he was never to see. There was no turning back so this team when into cryo-sleep along with the rest of the colonist.

That was a long, long time ago. Connor Gates is now General Gate and his team was the nucleus for the Colonial Defense Force (CDF) he created in the early days of the colony. New Earth wasn't as uninhabited as they had thought and there were lots of threats through the years that the civilian population just could not handle without the CDFs intervention. They protected the colony all through the years and now it is thriving. So much so, that New Earth has already sent its own colony ship about 26-lightyears away to establish a new colony. That voyage was to take ten years and there wasn't expected to be any communications between New Earth and the new colony for a long time.

But, Noah Baker and his wife Kara had recently invented an FTL drive they named the I-Drive. This changed everything! Now what would have taken 10 years to go the same distance as the previous colony ship, is now only a forty-day trip. So, Noah's ship, the Infinity , had been given a two part mission. One and primary is to test the capabilities of the new I-Drive. If it is as capable as they say, their initial estimate for travel time could be even shorter. Their second objective was to find out why they were not receiving any communications from the Ark II, the colony ship that had left well over 10 years ago.

So, Noah and his crew headed out and soon activated the I-Drive and slipped into faster than light travel with no problems. And that was the way they had hoped it would be. So, as they cruised along, they were still in communication with CENTCOM back at New Earth. But, there was still nothing coming from the Ark II which should have been orbiting Zeta-Alpha 5 by now.

What would they find when they reached Zeta-Alpha 5. The crew of the Ark II would certainly be surprised to see them, that for sure. It would be interesting to see if the colony ship had been successful in getting a new colony started. Nothing was really known for sure about the target planet, but it was thought to be habitable by humans and it did have its own flora and fauna ecosystem.

But as usual, nothing seems to go as planned. The Infinity had no idea how the I-Drive might react to other space anomalies during their travel. Unfortunately, they found out very suddenly when their ship interacted with a strong unexpected gravity wave. It threw the ship out of hyperspace and not easily. There was lots of damage with the sudden stop and even engineering was pretty well messed up. Kara Baker, Noah's wife was the Chief Engineer for the ship and she happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. She wound up getting seriously injured. This was unfortunate, but they had to continue the mission which they did after making extensive repairs.

The did arrive in the system containing Zeta-Alpha 5, but still no comms with the Ark II. What was even more curious was that the Ark II actually fired on the Infinity as they approached closer. Why was the ship acting this way. On further examination, they found the Ark II completely locked up. It had all it's security measures in place and the Infinity couldn't reach any of its system remotely. They did notice that two shuttles were missing or not still on-board so where did they go. Had they sent a scout team down to the planet? Lots of questions needed to be answered.

So, this is what the story is about. There are a lot of good characters involved in the story and you are familiar with all of them since they have mostly been around for the previous twelve books. And that's the nice part of these books, the characters stay the same from book to book with each one kind of becoming the center of attention. There are some interesting developments with the colony at New Earth. Life expectance has grown to about 250 years! That's a long time. Connor Gates is now ninety, but he has the physical attributes of someone in their forties. So, when do you change careers? And how does anyone move up in the chain of command if everyone above you can stay around for fifty years or more? That's questions we might have to face even now as our population lives longer and longer.

But, this series isn't over. Book fourteen, "Expedition Earth" is available on Amazon now and I'm already starting to read it. Should be just as good as all the rest of these books.

I've noticed in the past few books frequent references to gender and assigned behavior to each. Like Diaz and others saying they treat their children of different genders differently, implying girls are more fragile and look up to and follow their mothers and boys do the same with their father. In this book, Conner's son was getting into trouble, and Conner was thinking how his son and daughter handled conflicts differently, but thought it had more to do with their gender than personality traits.
In the last book when the guys were surprised the female Ovarrow were the majority pushing for solutions to their infertility, the women said the men
wouldn't understand because they're not women. That women have "urges" and it's "hardwired" into them. I'm a 40 yr old woman and have never had the urge to have children. Maybe curiosity of what they would look like, but that's it. And what of men? Men have just as strong a desire to procreate and pass on their dna as women do. And growing up, I always looked up to my father and only cared for his approval. Gender generalizations like this are annoying and harmful to spread. One of the reasons I liked this series to begin with is because they didn't do that and had competent, strong women in the series and serving in the military like I was. This is going to be the last I read of this series. The whole plot with Noah and the FTL ship just bored me and the series is going in a direction I just don't like.

Great

The Colony had lost communication with the Ark II after they reach the Zeta-Alpha Star System. Noah and Kara finished the new FTL engine and was installed on the Infinity. The crew of the Infinity and a team of the CDF are going to investigate what happened to the Ark II.

A new great adventure this time with Sean and Noah and with the help of Kara and the crew of the infinity they embark to the Zeta-Alpha System to find the colonists of the Ark II and their friend Lars.

Required Reading - 5 Stars!

I have enjoyed each book of Ken Lozito's First Colony series; I am compelled to offer some observations. It has been rewarding to experience Mr. Lozito's growth as a storyteller, a writer and an author... He has grown immensely in honing his skills in each of the aforementioned categories. What began as a talented and capable beginning has grown into a highly skilled, fully fleshed out, and deeply entertaining creation! Well done sir! We all done indeed!

The adventure continues with ' Infinity '

As always, Ken Lozito scribes a diverse cast of characters working together towards common goals, overcoming challenges, and at times denying deadly encounters. Truthfully, just enough established characters combined with new people and localities to entertain and not confuse. No users guild needed. 💞

This is the thirteen in the First Colony series, the start of a new arc. I enjoy Ken's books so much. The characters in First Colony are old friends that I look forward to catching up with in every new book. His writing is light and engaging, and he is a superb characterist(is that a word?). I can't wait for the next one..

Remarkable Full Circle

I loved this story that brings the new generation into focus and shows the extensive Universe developed. The new colony issues were monumental but brought the discoveries to the reader in relateable circumstances and even the full circle of human life and exploration. Well done. Excellent new aliens.

Not a bad diversion, but Lozito too often appears to get bored of his imaginations and rushes to finish them in a less than pleasing fashion.

However, there’s enough here to warrant 4 stars, if only in the comfortingly familiar characters. A little bit more innovation, pacing and follow through would not have gone amiss though.

Space exploration

Moving on from New Earth an infinity drive allows the colonists to send a rescue ship after the second colony ship which has gone silent. What they encounter is a fascinating and dangerous environment. Meanwhile most of the colonists are still in stasis on a ship with a deteriorating orbit, a ship in lockdown. Good read.

Awesome as Always

Like always, Ken delivers a superb story. His level of detail of scientific info has increased, but offers good explanation for the novice.

The only suggestion for future story lines is to be careful of not being too predictable. Not always should main character survive or succeed.

New direction

I never thought this was the direction the series would go after the krake war, I'm impressed. I was completely captivated throughout and nearly finished the book in one sitting. Keep up the wonderful work!!!

Great new arc.

Great new story arc, with the previous main character being sidelined. Still a strong showing, keeping the main themes while keeping the story face pased and interesting. Suprised that a series this long manages to stay fresh.

Indeed, hope we get to see more of it!

One of the best of the series. Exploration and adventure and well done. Aliens by their definition should be alien! Kudos to both Noah and Sean, they deserved their own tale, Kara too. Hope there is more to come.

Really good

This book definitely had less action than previous ones. But the story idea was very good, and execution of the story was quite enjoyable to read. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Good space opera

I like the story arc and the character development. I also like the addition of new characters in each book and their interaction around the main characters. Overall a really fun read if you're a fan of the genre.

infinity (First Colony Bk 13)

Okay let’s just say this started out as an interesting story , but as it went along it was make stuff up as you go along. Paleontologist delight & an intelligent fungus brought this face to a much needed quick end.

Great introduction of FTL to this Series

Very well written introduction of Faster than Light (FT L) drives to the series. This will allow expansion of a great series to more star systems and colonies.

Another great book in this series.

This book is primarily about Noah, leaving New Earth on a mercy mission. It was a nice distraction from the run of the mill stuff with Conor.

Scott Aiello does an amazing job, at the voice narration, again.

Can't wait to listen to the next!

Infinity (First Colony Book 13)

Well, this book takes science fiction to a whole new level. Sentient plants, flying whales and traveling across galaxies in a month instead of a decade... I just don't have the words.

Book 13 - Not Great

If I had to use two words, it would be “just ok”.
No where near the books that have come before. Hopefully the next one would be better & Ken also needs to bring this story to a close or a significant time jump.

As always an epic journey into space and an enthralling experience into the unknown. Feel like I'm transported into another dimension every time I read one of these. Excellent as usual. Can't wait to dive into the next book.

Flawed premise

The one thing I had against the basis of the story is the idea that 5k people would take off on an interstellar road trip without finding out more about where they were going. The story was still good but not plausible.
