Cyrus II of Persia (d.530BC) founded one of the largest empires of antiquity. Eventually coming to be known as the Persian empire it stretched from India to Greece.

What is particularly significant about Cyrus is that he seems to have been unusually ‘modern’ in his outlook and thinking. When he conquered people’s he largely left them free to organise themselves in cultural and religious matters. He is even thought to have made financial contributions to help the Jews rebuild their temple after its destruction by the Babylonians.

Although he allowed slavery he had very strict rules about how slaves should be treated. And in his empire women achieved some of the greatest extents of their powers. Women could travel and trade, and hold property. They were largely free to determine their own employment, even serving in armies and guard units.

But, no matter how enlightened he was in some respects, Cyrus followed the military thinking of his era. He is thought to have died (or been severely wounded) in a war of conquest.

This is a clear and readable account of Cyrus, which achieves a good balance between historical narration and commentary. It was also a little repetitive in places, reminding us several times, for example, that Cyrus narrowly escaped execution as a baby. A little tighter editing could have removed that kind of duplication.

I listened to the audiobook version of this book. There is certainly a lot of information included, but the story seemed to jump around to me. I think I would have been better with a print version of this particular book.
This is a very informative book, with histories from the entire Middle East region. I may revisit this book in a printed format another time so that I can better keep track of the various names and places.

Fascinante

Beginning of Persian Empire

Good account of Cyrus the Great's life. If true, this was a man who was before his time. His ideas of religious freedom and equality resonates today. Muslim Iran would be considered a threat to Chris's tolerant policies. Death to Islam!!!!!!!

Buena introducción a la vida de uno de los gobernantes más prominentes de la historia, considero que deja mucho que desear sobre datos más profundos de la historia del personaje principal, sin embargo la historia es tan buena y te presenta como alternativa leer la Ciropedia para profundizar.
