The reasons why the children of today can’t really appreciate it are vast, but I think the biggest problem might be that you had to let your imagination go. Back then, it wasn’t about special effects or believable monsters, it was just about fun. If you didn’t get into it and went along with the flaws, it would just be downright silly. Almost like watching pantomime, in a way? Or, without naming names, the powers that be hopes a political rally to be.
But if you take that talents of one Lucas Mangum and test his parental skills by asking him to write a story about a mommy, he might misunderstand you and write something along the lines of a 50’s style horror movie. Yet, he can be forgiven, because this story was so much fun and, if you add the ads that were equally hilarious and fucking with your mind about the story a little, you have a winner on your hands.
Although this story stands alone, it was a 10 day novella challenge – meaning you start writing day 1 and you publish an already edited story day 10 – with Candace Nola and Judith Sonnet.
I read Earth Vs. The Star Mummy in one sitting earlier this week. Fantastic book with humorous ads, zany violence, and a badass space mummy destroying a small quaint town. Think of it as a fun throwback to those 50s flicks like The Blob or Invasion of the Body Snatchers. This is my first Lucas Mangum book and it exceeded my expectations.
This was my first Lucas Mangum, but it won't be my last. Really enjoyed the sci-fy elements and the classic 50's B-movie feel. It's a quick read so of course, there's room for more, but I appreciate how much he got out of the project. This was a 10-day write-and-release, and there are a ton of moving parts to get that done.
This book is exactly what you want it to be, a 50s b-movie sci-fi that you think you've probably seen, but yet it's a new book. Has everything from the green and yellow glows, to the melting, to the army getting destroyed and scientist who think he's can fix everything. All the classic beats in a quick fun tale complete with hilarious commercial breaks.
I finally had a little time to jump back into this series, so here I am with Earth vs the Star Mummy. Three boys take off to Route 63 to get a closer look at the green thing that fell from the sky. They find it, but shortly after they probably wish they hadn’t. The Star Mummy is about to shake things up in Conestoga, NM. Sheee’s comiiinngg!
This was like taking a trip back in time reminding me of the old school horror movies. The story was very entertaining and for such a short read Mangum did great with the characters and packing so much action into these pages. The commercials, I loved them! Very unique and creative way to mention the other books in the series.
If you’re a fan of sci-fi horror and old movies, add this to your pile. The books in this series are standalones, but you should grab them all!
A Horror Bookworm Recommendation Earth vs The Lava Spiders by Candace Nola Earth vs The Star Mummy by Lucas Mangum Earth vs The Nudist Camp Freaks by Judith Sonnet https://horrorbookwormreviews.com/
Something has fallen from the sky near Route 63. Unsettling and not of this world, Tommy and several friends decide to investigate. What they find is a discovery within the realm of unbelievability.
A force of nature spurs an onslaught of horrific flaming rocks and gore-coated spiders. As the bubbling lava explodes near populated sandy beaches, the hungry eight-limbed invaders skitter towards their next meal of fresh meat.
A spaceship lands near a nudist colony known as Camp Starshine. The cigar shaped craft quickly reveals a menacing spaceman that has a message for the inhabitants of Earth. Mankind’s existence is soon threatened by a battle between armies and hordes of nude corpses.
Authors Candace Nola, Lucas Mangum and Judith Sonnet have collaborated to produce a triple feature that defines the American movie going experience of the 1950’s. From Mangum’s Roswell vibe of hostile outer space mummies to Sonnet’s shambling otherworldly ghouls and let’s not forget Nola’s ravenous eight legged arachnids. These three separate novellas are terror-bent on wreaking havoc and destroying humankind as we know it.
But wait…there’s more! Also included are actual commercials from paid sponsors such as Lucas’s Man Gum…”the only gum to make you feel like a man.” Drive-in Intermission sing-along songs…”let’s all go to the lobby.” Breaking news bulletins that are bound to shock and terrify…”be sure to bring someone you like and hold their hand to feel safe!”
These back-to-back-to-back silver screen love letters to the 1950’s are concocted with a dash of The Day The Earth Stood Still, a sprinkle of Plan 9 From Outer Space and a pinch of Night Of The Living Dead. Together, this creeping horror recipe cooks up one heck of a trilogy of terror. A five star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Horror Bookworm Recommendation.
Finished Earth vs the Star Mummy: A Tale of Alien Terror by Lucas Mangum the other day and omg. It was so much fun. This is a very fast read, so it'll be a short blurb of a review, but I still need to spread the word! For those who enjoyed those old campy black and white Sci fi/ horror movies that would come on late at night, step right up - this is a love letter to you. The alien trope isn't usually for me, but this one was too fun to skip! It was very creative and it was so funny. The commercials! Omg. If nothing else, please read it for the hilarious commercials! There are two more books (written by Candace Nola and Judith Sonnet) that complete the set, but they are all stand-alone short stories that can be read in any order from my understanding. I immediately picked up the other two books. This is such a fun concept! Get it now!!!
Earth vs the Star Mummy by Lucas Mangum is a fun and wicked little sci-fi horror read about … well … Earth vs. a star mummy. While it has an old movie vibe, this story reads like an old Outer Limits episode, complete with zany commercial breaks! It’s retro, it’s entertaining, but it’s also intense and violent and bloody in true Lucas Mangum style.
Also true to the Lucas Mangum style are the characters and the fantastic dialogue. It is truly amazing how Lucas can create full-blown, engaging characters in such a short and fast-paced story without losing a moment of tension. But he does. And it’s great. Then, of course, he puts them through the proverbial wringer as he is wont to do.
This shelf-worthy sci-fi horror gem is a must-read. It’s available in Kindle and paperback, so pick your format and prepare yourself for a wild tale of alien terror. Seriously, it’s a mummy from outer space terrorizing a small New Mexico town Lucas Mangum style. You know you want to read this.
I definitely had fun with this book. Mangum absolutely transported me to a 1950s drive in watching a cheesy sci-fi horror movie. It was so easy to envision the low budget special effects this would have had if this were actually a movie. The best part of this book was I could tell the author was enjoying himself while he wrote this. I loved the "commercials" as well, they made me chuckle especially the Man Gum. If you want to be taken back to the days of those old black and white sci-fi horror movies, give this a read.
This was such a pleasant romp through a B movie. I grew up watching movies like this and this book definitely made me smile with the nostalgia. I loved the “commercial breaks”. If you enjoy B movies or mummies or just beautiful prose, grab this one. You won’t be sorry.
Happy to report that Lucas's segment of the Earth vs. Series absolutely rips. It's bloody, weird, campy, and unapologetic. So happy to have him involved in this project and the end result was better than anticipated. Read it, folks! It's a good ol time
I really enjoyed the way this book was written. The language and descriptions really matched the perceived setting and did well transporting me to that time and place. The author's note in the back explained the reason behind the novella, and I enjoyed that insight as well.
This is read as a b rated 50s movie from one one of those car theaters. It even has a funny intermission. I enjoyed reading all 3 of these 10 day book challenges.
