Some stories are written in blood, others hang on the wall.
Velimir knows the truth of this better than most, for he has dedicated himself to the Great Hunt and the finest deeds of his life are mounted over the fireplace.
From the curled horns of a mountain goat, taken during his first trip into the wilds, to the scarred face of the Mother of Bears, earned during a brutal encounter with the savage Grey Crow, it’s all there on the wall.
Now, stranded alone at home in the midst of the worst winter in a generation, Velimir once again finds himself revisiting those past glories.
And he’ll learn from them the biggest lesson of all… that sometimes not even the past can prepare you for what’s coming.
Another fabulous dive into Anthony Mitchell's world! Returning to the Whitelands is fun for a reader, less fun if you actually live there!
Much like "The Scars Of Jorn Redclaw," this was a prequel novella to the sensational Wolfeater. Where Jorn's novella delved into the titular character and one of the Grey Crow, "Glories" delved into their greatest enemies: The Valor.
Known as Wolves for their elongated canines and how their ancestors used to run with wolves, we follow primarily Velimir's stories in the run up to events in Wolfeater.
It's a fabulous world that the author has built, with absolutely zero clear "good" or "bad" sides to be on. Everyone is simply trying to survive the Whitelands and do the best they can with what they have. It means every day is hard, winters are brutal, and survival is never guaranteed.
Velimir, in his fifties, has survived far longer than most, and his stories are quite breathtaking. His brother, Finn, is Senya's father - Senya being one of the primary character in Wolfeater.
I've always loved additional lore and stories set in spectacular worlds, and that is what these two novellas deliver. Characters are expanded upon, and also cross paths in unlikely ways, making for great easter eggs if you've read the other novella (and Wolfeater, of course), so it's great to get the other perspective for a couple of events.
It also makes each character and both sides even better, because you really feel for them and understand both their struggles and what they're going through. Most often, things are tragic, but there are some seeds of hope sprinkled throughout, and victories that can be celebrated.
I really love this world. Anthony Mitchell writes very, very well, with incredibly visceral descriptions that make every environment feel real and immersive. Highly, highly recommend this series!
Every single person should buy The Scars of Jorn Redclaw and Glories Gone. This book was so good! These books aren’t that long but are packed with so much content! You really get to know and love these characters and live out the stories they have been through. I am so glad I came across these books on Twitter! Anthony Mitchell makes it so easy to read and understand. Go out and get all of these books! I can’t wait to read Wolfeater next!
It is the worst of winters. Shut in & surrounded by past glories. The foreboding danger of the Whitelands cast aside. Memories become vivid & the past comes alive.
Can’t get enough of this gritty clan warring world. Another home run in the Wolfeater saga.
Another great set of stories. I read this after Scars of Jorn Redclaw, with Glories Gone following the Wolves instead of the tribes. The new perspective is refreshing, and it was great seeing the parallels between both books. And my WHAT a shocking ending. Bring on Wolfeater next! Highly recommended
