Undoubtedly by Design: A Summer Romance at Pemberley

Rate this book
After the world’s worst timed and worst worded proposal, Fitzwilliam Darcy strives to understand and to accept the reasons behind the unexpected rejection he receives. With acceptance, comes the desire to become a better man, even if the lady who inspired that change will never know the result of her take down. At his ancestral home for the summer, he will conquer the biggest and most painful disappointment of his life.
At Hunsford, taken by surprise by the unexpected proposal from the last man in the world she would have imagined to make one to her, Elizabeth Bennet has delivered the most unladylike refusal, accompanied by a string of (mostly unwarranted) reproaches. After striving to understand and accept the explanations in the letter he writes to her afterwards, Elizabeth vows to more carefully judge new acquaintances and avoid jumping to hasty conclusions as she travels for the summer with her closest and dearest family members, the Gardiners.
For both, one faithful July, Pemberley provides succour and a haven of peace and new beginnings amidst the beauties of the manor and splendours of the surrounding park, as well as in the company of old and new friends alike.
Pemberley, Elizabeth, Darcy…and romance! But then a letter arrives…

You already know what’s about to happen, don’t you? Or, do you?

What is one to do when one’s sixteen-year-old sister chooses to leave her friends and family and throw herself into the power of a well-known scoundrel?
When you think you know what will happen, you will be proven wrong!

There is a truly unique twist to the well-known tale in this Pride and Prejudice novella, ‘Undoubtedly by Design’, a fast-paced romance at Pemberley from the author of ‘Happy by Accident…or Not?’ and ‘An Unpleasant Sort of Man’. This is a “summer” romance, perfect to be enjoyed cuddled in your favourite armchair with a hot beverage of your choice — chocolate, spiced tea, mulled wine…

I have read the two other P&P variations by this author and enjoyed them. I won a copy of this story during the blog tour.

This story begins as Elizabeth accompanies her aunt and uncle, the Gardiners, on a tour of Pemberley and, as in canon, they meet Darcy there. The Bingleys and Georgiana are part of the party. Elizabeth becomes friends with Georgiana but it is obvious that G. has not gotten over her feelings for Wickham. She is torn between what Wickham had related about Fitzwilliam and her duty to her brother and expectations from him, family, and society. Elizabeth provides advice and suggestions as to how Wickham might have manipulated Georgiana's memories in trying to convince her he has always been her friend.

We have a deviation from canon in this story. (That's how variations work.) I do not want to relate the details about that so as not to spoil the story. The angst connected with the event happens about half way through the tale.

With the Gardiners and Elizabeth staying at Pemberley there is now also a focus on the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy. They talk through all the misunderstandings and the changes Darcy has made and there are apologies on both sides.

This was a sweet story, not too long and with an interesting twist.

Part adventure, part romance, this well-edited novel shows Michelle D'Arcy is an author to follow in the JAFF world. You get your angst in the romp, that's for certain.

My review will be technical and won't have a synopsis or much time spent on general reflection or subjective opinions. Instead, I'll deal with those items that niggle readers while reading and cause them to drop a star, yet that most reviewers don't comment upon.

The plot is a complete story arc with two specific areas where the title is addressed: in the sub-story regarding the adventure of the trip north and in the supposition of others on the romance between Darcy and Elizabeth, which I'll deal with later. The main story is a Regency romance, though, and it's well plotted and different enough to put a smile on the face of the reader. Angst is moderate for most of the novel, lower at the start and end.

Flow is continually forward and the pace is quick. You won't find a boring section in this book. The balance of narrative and dialogue is perfect.

Point of view was an area of confusion to me. Due to the head-hopping, I assumed the story was intended to be Omniscient Narrator, yet the author got pretty deep in her point of view when she was speaking from individual perspectives for the hero and heroine, almost like she was using third person multiple point of view. I suggest Michelle D'Arcy read up on point of view and then try to be more consistent in her books. Furthermore, since she can write a decent close POV, I suggest she cut the head-hopping and use that style. In particular, she should work hard to avoid using POV for minor characters.

Some filter words were used, which is telling when the writing should be more showing.

My notes state in one place "good Regency voice" and then later "Regency language Rocks!"--that's how this book reads. There were only three non-Regency words and one phrase to knock you out of the feel of the era. No Americanisms were found.

The word "self-sufficient" was used incorrectly and I don't know what word the author was intending to use in its place, but she must have meant something else.

I found a comma used where none was needed and another used where it should have been a semicolon. Punctuation for Mrs. and similar words was modern British (without periods) whereas periods were used in the Regency. Otherwise, punctuation seemed great and there were no typos or spelling errors detected.

In one place, this reader became confused as to who was the speaker. A simple dialogue tag would have helped.

A more caring Darcy could not be found as he has matured from canon. Elizabeth is bold and daring, maybe a bit more than in canon. So the characterizations in this story were the author's own, yet they were consistent. I liked what she did with the minor characters as well. Mr. Bennet was bang-on canon and irked me to no end as a result.

Where the environs were described, they helped to enhance the story, and the descriptions were thorough and used sensory explanations to help the reader, though this was not a tool used that often by this author. Perhaps she would consider sneaking in more scene-setting in the future.

The romance in the story develops at an excellent pace and it's believable. We feel each moment for the couple as things progress for them despite criticisms per the title. The language used and the interactions that take place are well-timed and show all the feelings they must be having at that point in the development of their interaction, and then at the end, the author does a fantastic job of showing the depth of their love in short words with Mr. Bennet as well as a tasteful non-explicit intimate scene after they are wed.

The cover isn't the greatest, looking very home-made and generic. The main artwork is pretty but it could be on a thousand other books. The text isn't in good balance, and the little silhouettes seem like an afterthought, and they're really out of balance with the rest. Lines and curlicues are a good idea, though, if better balanced. The scale of fonts is good for Amazon. Overall, I give the cover a thumbs down. It just doesn't say "buy me."

That's a pity because the overall book, I give a thumbs up. It's one of my favourites of 2022. The romance threads its way through every scene, yet the author was clever enough to be able to give readers an adventurous twist interwoven into the main romance to enhance the read and the closeness of the pair. Often a side story is a no-no and distracts. This one was so embedded, it was the perfect plot twist. I'd strongly recommend this book to others, and in addition, look forward to more from Michelle D'Arcy.

Disclaimer: I'm a JAFF author and some might say this review is a conflict of interest. However, I was a reader first, and my reviews are honest and impartial. I write them for the benefit of both the reader and the author.

Outstanding variation on an elopement

Powerful, extremely well-written variation on the elopement that caused much angst within ODC. Our characters stayed true to themselves with poignant and strong dialogue. The story flowed; no awkward breaks were to be had. Our supercilious sisters were adequately venomous. Secondary characters were portrayed to perfection. Well done.

Undoubtedly by Design is a low angst Pride & Prejudice variation where Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth meet by accident while she is touring the grounds of Pemberley with the Gardiners. It is, therefore, a post Hunsford plot that allows Elizabeth to revisit her opinion about Mr. Darcy and realize how wrong she was in refusing his proposal of marriage. The two main characters spend a lot of time together in idyllic Pemberley, talking and getting to know one another in the company of old and new friends, and this will obviously show Elizabeth how Darcy is amongst those he respects and values. However, an event occurs that forces this couple to go on an adventurous trip that will make the story even more compelling. This means this book has it all: romance and adventure!
One aspect I absolutely loved about Undoubtedly by Design was the opening scene and how captivating it is! It made me want to read the book nonstop. After that, there wasn’t one dull moment in the book, however, the author does take her time to develop the characters feelings, so nothing seems too sudden either. She found a good balance between the built up of the romance and the action elements that moved the story forward.
I particularly liked the simple writing style full of witty dialogues and without filler sentences or words. This author has proven to be very good when it comes to dialogues, and this book was no exception.  It showed us exactly what it needed to show and avoided having the characters overthinking every statement and/or action that was occurring, something that seems to be a tendency of late in this genre, and that I really dislike because it prevents the reader from immersing himself in the interactions that are occurring. Instead this book focused on Darcy and Elizabeth's dialogues and interactions and took the time to build their relationship by showing the reader what was happening.
Mrs. Bennet’s reaction to Elizabeth’s engagement was priceless, and I always love to love Mrs. Bennet. In fact, the secondary characters in this book were also something I really enjoyed because they kept their main traits, but only appeared on page long enough to allow Darcy and Elizabeth’s relationship to grow.
Summing up, Undoubtedly by Design is perfect for readers who like low angst, fast paced novels with plenty of Darcy and Elizabeth page time. The couple teams up to solve a difficult situation, but their love and trust for one another never wavers. I recommend this sweet and well-built romance to my readers.
P.S - Don't you love the cover???

Following literature's most appalling proposal, Fitzwilliam Darcy endeavours to understand Elizabeth Bennet's chastisements and become a better man.

Darcy writes a letter explaining himself and Elizabeth learns to think better of him.

A few months later, Elizabeth is on holiday in Derbyshire with her Uncle and Aunt Gardiner. They make a tourists visit to Pemberley, as the Darcy family are away. Elizabeth is shocked to bump into Darcy.

Fate has granted them a second chance for love but they must overcome the challenges of a teenage elopement and a wicked scoundrel.
The road to Gretna Green awaits.

Pleasing twist from the original. Definitely worth your time!

I always enjoys this author’s books. This one has lots of Darcy and Elizabeth page time and some interesting new plot twists. Lydia does not go to Brighton, but Wickham is still up to no good. There were a lot of lengthy conversations between, well everyone, which would be my only complaint.

The Letter That Interrupts it All

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Source: Gift from Author

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Variation

THE PREMISE: Misunderstandings are clearing up, feelings of admiration and affection are flourishing, and second chances are seized at Pemberley. But then a letter appears that has the power to destroy all the progress made and damage the potential for more than one happily ever after. However, in this variation, the events that happen post-letter take a couple of unique turns…

MY THOUGHTS:

I actually went into reading this novel with some trepidation as I typically abhor when Lydia’s and Wickham’s drama disturb and alter everything wonderful that is going on a Pemberley. Talk about a most unwelcome and ill-timed interruption! I am happy to say this premise introduced some interesting twists that kept my dislike of such an interruption in check!

Elizabeth visiting Pemberley is such a pivotal part of her relationship with Mr. Darcy. She is seeing him with new eyes, learning more about his true nature, and finally sketching his character with accuracy. Michelle D’Arcy beautifully portrays all these discoveries and emotions in Elizabeth’s visit.. In addition, she illustrates Mr. Darcy’s earnest attempts to improve Elizabeth’s opinion of him, his gentlemanly thoughtfulness towards the Gardiners, and his compassionate and kind behavior with everyone he encounters. I enjoyed witnessing Elizabeth’s observation of all of Mr. Darcy’s improved behavior and admirable attributes. I especially loved the forthright conversations the two had and the moments where they chose words or actions that unmistakably alluded to their feelings for each other…

But as seasoned Austenesque and Pride and Prejudice variations readers have come to expect…an interruption is coming. And I was pleasantly surprised to see this one take a unique turn. I appreciated the alterations and new developments these turns caused. Especially the ones that led to more Darcy and Elizabeth together time! Those late night scenes at various inns….*swoon*

In addition to Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, I appreciated Ms. D’Arcy’s portrayal of other P&P characters. Georgiana’s relationship with both Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth is lovely to witness, Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner are wonderfully supportive and sanguine, Mr. Bingley grows some decisiveness, Mr. Hurst is more than a lump, and Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are, in essentials, very much what they ever were but very likable. My only quibbles would be a desire for some scenes that were summarized to happen on page instead, and for maybe a little more satisfying closure with the resolution.

Captivating, endearing, and unique – Undoubtedly By Design is a beautifully inspired visit to Pemberley! A wonderful choice for readers who crave more time with Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth within Pemberley’s majestic and idyllic environs!

A story in 3 acts.

Act 1 - Elizabeth and her relations happen to meet up with Darcy at Pemberley. They have the opportunity to spend time together, and grow closer.

Act 2 - The race is on to save Georgiana from Wickham and her own ignorance on who he really is. Elizabeth travels with her uncle and Darcy to chase the couple down.

Act 3 - Everyone is safe and they are now in Meryton to prepare for our dear couple's nuptials and happy ever after.

I enjoyed this story. Gardiner is convinced to agree to Elizabeth joining them, which seems a bit out of character, but it offers her and Darcy the time to grow even closer, and reach a happy understanding.

Much is made of the benefits vs cost of keeping girls and young ladies ignorant of the truth about unscrupulous men, or telling them the unvarnished truth, despite their maidenly ears. I got the impression it was a main focus point of the story - undoubtedly by design of the author.

Lovely story

Lydia didn't go to Brighton so Darcy has more time with the Gardiner party at Pemberley. Their three weeks are eventful as they work together to solve another problem. Then there's an extended HEA and we see the satisfying reactions of some interested parties.

Steam level: there's a wedding night but we are unaware of what happens during those sort of things.

This story was flawlessly edited and engaging and I finished it in one sitting. Would recommend.

It took me a while to get into the story as I‘m not a fan of retellings from canon about what happened so far in detail even with the conversations.
And afterwards it still dragged on a little as it was almost 1:1 as in canon for few pages.

When it finally changed I couldn‘t put the book down though. And I enjoyed the plot very much.
The book is very well written normally a quick read with only 220 pages.

Darcy and Elizabeth were so cute! I should not forget to mention that. Their progressed Love Story is simply beautiful.

I do however find it a little disappointing that we don‘t get an Epilogue, the ending was in my opinion a bit abrupt I think.

If you want a quick, clean, middle angst read, this might be for you 😊

The Pride and Prejudice variation I read just prior to this one was a tough act to follow, yet this book stands up to that challenge.

The prologue sets up a question in the reader's mind, and then the story begins, more than halfway through the original, when Elizabeth Bennet is visiting Derbyshire with her aunt and uncle Gardiner. As the first chapter opens, they are enjoying dinner at Pemberley, invited by a Darcy who seems to have been humbled out of some of his arrogance after Elizabeths's earlier refusal. They join him, his sister, the Bingleys, and the Hursts at Pemberley. We soon learn, from a private conversation between Elizabeth and Darcy, that Mr. Bennet decided not to let Lydia go to Brighton with the Forsters. She's safe at home. But that does not mean, as the story progresses, that there are not still dangers and scoundrels for the characters to overcome.

Two seemingly small changes in who goes where and who does what make all the difference to create this fresh variation on Pride and Prejudice, proving what JAFF lovers already know, that the same story can be told by different authors in a variety of ways that make for fascinating reading. This variation is in some ways the same or similar (thankfully without many direct passages from Austen's story), but in other ways so different. I especially like how it made me laugh at the end, when it came to Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's reactions. Touching and thoughtful, and highly recommended.

That scoundrel, Wickham

The story begins after the Hunsford proposal as both Elizabeth and Darcy are licking their wounds. Mrs. Bennet unceasingly berates Lizzie for refusing Mr. Collins, but Lizzie's reprieve is traveling north with Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner.

From Lambton, the Gardiners decide to visit Pemberley. After determining that Mr. Darcy is not in residence, Lizzie agrees that she would like to see the house and grounds. While they are admiring the gardens, who should appear but Mr. Darcy. Will he make himself scarce or ask them to leave?

After three not so well edited books in a row this book was especially delightful. Well plotted, well edited just all around a good read.

I wish the author would write a book focusing on Elizabeth and society. I think she could do it well.

No modern language that I can recall and one or two typos. A few excess commas but then I’m not positive about that.

This has a surprising Wickham twist.

EXCELLENT READ!

This was a wonderful read by a great P&PFF writer. The story was exciting but not angsty, not to mention very inventive: ODC meet again at Pemberley, and then things get interesting ...

I ALWAYS enjoy this writer's work as it NEVER disappoints. The stories just get better and better.

Heartily recommend.

Undoubtedly by Design: A (Summer) Romance at Pemberley

A story with a Twist. The story starts as usual. The Meryton Assembly remark. Wickham’s lying words that further reinforced Elizabeth’s dislike of Darcy. And last but not least, the awful marriage proposal at Hunsford. The prejudice trifecta of misunderstandings. Even the summer trip of Elizabeth’s trip with the Gardiners is much the same as in the original version of Pride and Prejudice. Along with Darcy and Elizabeth meeting at Pemberley and the inclusion of the superior sisters of Charles Bingley. Darcy behavioral change was evident. The big difference was the elopement letter that was not delivered by mail. The elopement letter was delivered by an upset Mrs. Annesley, it’s Georgiana who has eloped for a second time with the scoundrel, George Wickham. This time not only is Darcy after the pair, but he’s joined with Mr. Gardiner and Elizabeth. It is Elizabeth who becomes the voice of reason starting with the wording of the letter. Wickham has once again twisted words in the letter to his advantage causing Georgiana to feel her brother deserved better than herself to pursue his happiness without her causing him distress. A sudden and quick trip towards Gretna Greene is quickly underway to catch Wickham before he can ruin her life more than he has already done. Elizabeth finds the Georgiana and confronts Wickham unlike anyone has done before. Georgiana listens to what Elizabeth discloses about his perfidious nature and lies he has told her about her brother especially the infamous living left by Darcy’s father. Stunned, Georgiana finally listens as his misdeeds are exposed, and by this time, Darcy arrives with Mr. Gardiner. Wickham is left without his ticket to riches and Darcy less money than he started with. True to his nature, Wickham revokes his agreement with Darcy once again and returns to London. Darcy tired of Wickham’s constant interference with his life has him thrown into Marshalsea, and then removed to a military unit that was heading to the continent. If lucky, his unless life will end on the battlefield. Before the Gardiners and Elizabeth leave Pemberley for Longbourn, Darcy proposes a second time and is accepted. Returning to Longbourn, explaining her engagement to first her father and then her mother, is a bit hysterical. The disclosure to the Bingley sisters really upsets a few so much so that Hurst relishes accompanying the two gentlemen to Longbourn. Of course, Caroline’s displeasure is no comparison to that of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, but Darcy cuts ties with her until she apologizes. In October ODCs married in a double ceremony and move on to their HEA. A Christmas holiday at Pemberley for the Bennets and Gardiners is something to look forward to in the near future.

Just so-so

The story begins during Elizabeth's trip to Derbyshire with the Gardiners, so after the disastrous proposal, and the subsequent letter from Darcy to Elizabeth. Elizabeth is pleasantly surprised by the kind reception that Darcy has shown to the Gardiners and herself, even going so far as introducing them all to his sister, and then inviting them all to stay at Pemberly. During their stay at Pemberly, there's an incident involving Georgiana, and Elizabeth and Mr Gardiner are involved in the resolution.

I must give credit to the author for a very well written book. However, other than some slight twists in the plot, there wasn't much new, and I found myself skimming quite a bit to get through a lot of the same old thing. Besides that, I felt that the plot made Georgiana look like an idiot, and I wasn't at all pleased with the wishy washy way that Darcy decided to deal with the Wickham problem. Not very impressive.

I can only give the book a very tepid recommendation.

Delightful

A lovely and sensible book. No eye rolls from me- sometimes I think there should be ratings based off how many times you rolled your eyes while reading 😄

What I liked:
-Plenty of Darcy and Elizabeth.
-Darcy and Elizabeth were reasonable.
-They didn't sabotaged their budding romance by overthinking every statement or action.
-Love the dialogue.
-Balance and true forgiveness. They equally shared the blame for past behavior. No one was brow beaten. No one appeared better than the other. They were on equal footing.
-It's always a surprise when there is a Mrs. Bennet that I actually like. Yes, she was a bit silly, but not over-the-top ridiculous. Her reaction to Elizabeth's engagement was perfect.
-I like the conversation between Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth concerning Darcy. Shame on Elizabeth for teasing her father that way😂
-A small dose of the Bingleys and Wickham.
-No Collins or Lady Catherine.

Georgiana is sweet, but like Elizabeth, I wanted to shake her.

This is an enjoyable P&P spinoff with the familiar characters portrayed very well. The romance is true to the original in many respects. It is also plausible and interesting where it branches off. Kudos to Ms D'Arcy for adhering to the manners of the Regency Era and its language. There are no glaring modernisms to jar the reader from the overall mood and setting of the story.

Something I missed from the original was conflict: whether between D'Arcy and Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Mrs. Bennett or Elizabeth and Lydia, etc., the conflicts helped to define the characters without resorting to description. Although I understand that the author had to make room for the new story arc, I do think there were opportunities for just a few sparks from the protagonists rather than leaving that entirely to the villains in the piece.

That minor quibble aside, this novel is very well written, so much so that I read it at one sitting. I highly recommend it to Jane Austen fans who are looking for a high quality variation on the original.

Beautiful, lovely, romantic, beautifully written story. The focus is entirely on ODC which is what I like and the characters are true to thenselves. They are steong and fragile at the same time, passionate and ready to face every difficulty for those whom they love. And together they can overcome every obstacle. This story show how ODC's mutual love grows day after day, while both Darcy and Elizabeth overcome their insecurities in order to truly be together no matter what.
And they are a gorgeous team! A perfect combination of passionate love and great action for a wonderful story which grips the reader from the beginning till the very end.
The only complaint I have is that it ends and I would have wanted more.

Sublime variation

This variation is close to perfect, although a bit towards the sensual-dramatic side. Still, every bit of it is just about everything every fan of JAFF craves for, especially that element of more Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

There is also a tad of George Wickham and Georgiana Darcy but they are instrumental in bringing the beloved couple more close and connected as in Canon. The justification of Elizabeth Bennet’s change in affection and regard for Mr. Darcy and vice versa is quite palpable, even dominant in many parts. This reader feels that is what makes this one of the best P&P variations she’s ever read. Highly recommended!

An unexpected encounter leads to a chance to be of assistance to Mr. Darcy. But there more?

Miss Elizabeth Bennet had not expected Mr. Darcy to arrive at Pemberly while she and her Gardiner Aunt and Uncle were concluding their tour of Pemberly. She expected Mr. Darcy's kindness towards her even less. Sometimes, in an effort to truly help someone we love, there is a need for brutal honesty. Such proved to be the case, in the matter concerning Miss Georgiana Darcy. Only her incitefullness and honesty would prove to be strong enough to get thru to an innocent, naive young girl. This was a wonderfully warm book. Enjoy!

What if the one in need of help is Darcy.

It is satisfying to have the role reversed, the place swapped. The author did this by planning Elizabeth to help Darcy with the most devastating and delicate crisis instead of the other way around in canon. Elizabeth dealt the situation first with impulse, but then with calm and clear mind, which reflected perfectly her own words that, ‘ her courage always rises with attempt to intimidate her’ .

On the other hand, under the peculiar circumstance, Darcy showed his vulnerability and his soft spot which made him more human, and more likable.

Low-angst and HEA, a balm-like variation.

Excellent variation

Well written variation for our favourite couple. Interesting treatment for the secondary characters -- Wickham getting better treatment than he deserved after a second attempt of manipulation. I agree with Col. Fitzwilliam, might have been better to shoot him. Bingley and Hurst improved also in this variation. Enjoy.
