A festive lesbian romance featuring a matchmaking cat.
Lena has just moved to a new city with her cat, Scully, so when she finds little gifts on her doorstep every day, she thinks they’re from her neighbors.
Caroline, who lives next door, can’t figure out how her stuff keeps disappearing until she catches a cat in the act of stealing from her. She follows the feline felon home—and meets its cute owner.
Despite Lena’s best efforts, Scully doesn’t seem inclined to give up her life of crime, so she keeps having to go over to Caroline’s to return the loot.
Soon, neither woman minds the cat burglary anymore. Is it possible that her thieving cat gave Lena the purrfect gift for Christmas?
Each book in the Matchmaking Cats Series can be read as a standalone.
Jae is the author of twenty-six award-winning romances between women. She lives in the sunniest city of Germany, near the French and Swiss borders. The writing bug bit her at the age of eleven.
She used to work as a psychologist but gave up her day job in 2013 to become a full-time writer and a part-time editor. As far as she’s concerned, it’s the best job in the world.
When she’s not writing, she is an avid reader of sapphic books, indulges her ice cream and office supply addictions, and watches way too many crime shows.
This is one of the novellas in Jae's Sapphic Advent Calendar and there are two neighbours and a klepto cat in it. And oh boy, what a cute story this is! Plus, Suzanne and Anja from Paper Love live in the same building too.
This isn't really in a series, but it features a cameo from the main characters of Paper Love. You could read that first if you wish but you don't have to.
This was the perfect length for this story—i.e. very short. Caroline and Lena are a good match and both were immediately sympathetic. Since neither had any real conflict keeping them apart, things progress naturally and quickly. Plus, Lena's cat Scully was hugely fun. I don't buy the persistence with stealing from Caroline to give "gifts" to Lena, but roll with that and it all fits extremely well.
And I don't have more to say. Perfect length. Good holiday rep. And inviting characters. Five stars and a lovely, engaging romance.
A note about Chaste: Jae pulls the shades just as they decide to be a thing. So all we get is a very lovely kiss and then the epilogue. This was also pretty perfect.
A note about temptation: This review has three whole perfects and I resisted the impulse to use purrfect every. single. time. You're welcome or I'm sorry depending on your personal taste.
Low 4 stars. Lovely ff christmas novella. Scully the cat plays matchmaker between Caroline and her new neighbor Lena. Sweet characters, a bit of chemistry, no angst or drama or misunderstandings, essentially there's the cat's antics, 2 people getting to know each other, and a few kisses (including the epilogue set 11 months later).
I absolutely loved this! Sweet and romantic. A purrfect holiday short!
Update after listening to the audiobook version:
Even more enjoyable with Anastasia Watley’s narration! It was obvious she had a lot of fun with it. I appreciate having a two hour short story on audio to sandwich between much longer listens!
Just a sweet, feel good romance with cute kitty antics to give you the warm fuzzies this holiday season! Festive moments ensue, with some bits of info about German culture, too.
Cute orange kitty plays matchmaker for her owner Lena and their new neighbor, Caroline. Just the right amount of sweet and funny in this romance. Quick and easy read. Anastasia Watley captures the warmth on audio. Without a doubt, Scully the cat rocks as a burglar.
This was the best holiday read this year (so far). Klepto kitty is my favourite, she reminds me of a cat I used to have. Instead of stealing stuff from the neighbours he picked up trash from the field and proudly came to present it.
The cat matchmaker was adorable. I looked forward to every robbery, and the characters ended up doing the same. A book with German characters and a German setting is refreshing. This novella is the perfect quick read for the holidays.
Shorter christmas romcom that actually got a few chuckles out of me.
This was centered around a matchmaking cat. Animals in books are always a gamble. Often, they dont resemble their kind very much. I was surprised how much of a cat the cat felt like. While he seemed to be responsible for causing the two neighbors to collide, he still reminded me of a real cat.
This was loosely connected to Paper Love. While I didn't connect with Paper Love, I felt this novella had the right mix of drama, comedy, and pining that goes into a good holiday story.
Oh my. This is such an adorable novella. Purrfect taste of the festive season and the most adorable cat burglar and cute tshirts I’m coming to associate with Jae’s fantastic comedic moments in her amazing stories. I love this story and I’d love to see more or Caro and Lena in the future.
This short story is a fun read! Perfect for those who love Christmas tales, cat stories, and sweet romances. Imagine your dream girl moving in next door and knocking your socks off every time you see her. And what if your cat was the reason you two kept bumping into each other? A matchmaker cat is every lesbian's dream, right? The only complaint I have is that it's too short, but this story is the perfect length for a cozy afternoon during the holiday break.
Ylva Publishing was kind enough to send me a copy via Netgalley for an honest review
Short but very sweet neighbors become lovers. Thanks to one's rogue cat, who "acquires" little gifts, the two girls meet and end up spending Christmas together. The attraction sparkles with some sharp dialogue and festively fun scenes. This is a read that fills you with warmth for the holiday season 😀.
2024 re-read:
This popped up as an ARC on NetGalley so I gave this delightful novelette from Jae another read before adding my review there. It's just as delightful as it was the first time around!
4,5 stars I liked the German setting (I lived there for years, so many of the day-to-day things have been exactly like in the book) and the MCs. The story wasn't the pinnacle of believability, but was nice. There were cameos from characters from "Paper Love". I still haven't read that one, I just recognised the names.
4 stars. Precious little Christmas novella that features a romance between neighbors and there’s a thieving cat named Scully. I love Jae’s writing style so much and she’s definitely one of my favorites. This was funny and sweet and the characters Caroline and Lena are both extremely likable and they had some fun banter between them. I liked their chemistry and thought the ending and epilogue were super cute. Overall, this is a really quick read but it was perfect for this time of year.
A cute novella set in the city of Freiburg. For those who have read Paper Love, the main characters there are neighbors with Lena and Caro. This is the story of how Lena's cat played matchmaker. Jae is a master of these light enjoyable romances and this is no exception.
This was adorable, quick, sweet and cute, and the audio performer's voice suited nicely. I enjoyed watching these two get into each other, amused at the kleptomaniac kitty, and really enjoyed experiencing a holiday story set somewhere that wasn't the US (or even Canada), and the glimpses of somewhere different and a few different traditions.
