It began in Ethiopia, hundreds of thousands of years ago.  When a handful of genetic mutations caused evolution to split from the primates.  And mankind was born.

Now, eons later, evidence of more splits from the apes are being unearthed. And with them, a disturbing realization. Ours was only one of many.

And yet we survived. But it was not by luck or chance. We survived because humans had something the others did not. A unique ingredient that has only now been rediscovered.

First in the mountains of South America, where it was promptly destroyed by the Chinese. And now a second source in Africa. The epicenter of mankind's very inception.

A place that John Clay and Alison Shaw must find quickly. Because the Russians already know what we are searching for. And the Chinese want back what is rightfully theirs.

The mother of all secrets awaits the world, in Africa. One that will not only explain who we are, but will decipher the very code within our own DNA.

Michael C. Grumley returns to further explore the evolution of mammals, as well as their interconnectivity in this stunning series. Pushing a little science fiction alongside his captivating narrative, Grumley takes the reader on a deeper and more intense journey with each new novel in the collection. The action is intense, as the Russians are now eager to get their hands on whatever is rocking the genetic world, while the Chinese remain on guard and want what they felt was theirs all along. While Alison and John try to settle in Trinidad, they realise that it is Africa (specifically Rwanda) that might hold the key to this life force, while also helping them to better understand the evolution of the human race all those millennia ago. There’s also some understanding of what the foreign DNA source can do for humans, which has both positive and negative side effects for all involved. This is surely another winner by Michael C. Grumley, perfect for series fans and those who want an impactful novel that will open the mind and eyes simultaneously.

There is no end to the chills that have filled the past two novels, particularly when the Russians realise that there is something going on under their noses. While one of their submarines was destroyed as they watched Chinese officials collect some plant life, they are certain that it can be something beneficial to them. The Russians, still lurking under the water, prepare to strike and take what they feel is theirs to possess, but they do not yet fully understand it or what powers it could possess.

The Chinese know all too well what this is and they want it back. In a new and intensified geo-political fight, Chinese authorities are ready to take what they feel was theirs to begin with, using force and whatever they can to ensure no one else gets hold of their prized biological (and botanical) find. It is sure to cause some trouble, but the Chinese are ready to do whatever it takes.

All the while, Alison Shaw and John Clay are part of a new and highly secretive team tasked with better understanding some of their earlier discoveries with communication, life outside Earth, and some of the aforementioned highly sought-after intel. When aliens came to Earth all those years ago, they left the lifeblood of humanity, weaving it not only into some early mammals, but also depositing it in a vault of sorts. This is why dolphins, gorillas, and humans have so many similarities, something that Shaw and some of her other biologists are discovering again as they watch the interactions with their respective subjects. Dolphins Sally and Dirk appear to be making headway in their communication with one another and Alison, but adding Dulce, a gorilla, to the mix opens even more avenues of study.

While Shaw and Clay concentrate their time in Trinidad, it is not long before they realise that it is the African continent that holds all the secrets they must uncover. Trekking there, it is first thought that Ethiopia is where they ought to be, but soon discover that Rwanda, still teetering on the brink from recent civil war, is where the true discoveries exist. Working to further some gorilla research that has taken place, Shaw and the IMIS team venture to the region, where they learn more about gorillas and their impact on the larger mammalian advancements on Earth.

The stakes are high with both the Chinese and Russians ramping up their efforts to take what they want and leave a massacre if that is what’s needed. Shaw and Clay are not safe, nor are the discoveries they have uncovered. Add to that, a young woman, Lei Na, remains a sought after commodity in her native China, as she possesses a unique strain of DNA inside her, saved by her father before he died doing what he felt was right for all. It’s more intensity in a series that has never lacked it. And there is so much more I did not cover, best revealed by the reader when they dive in!

Michael C. Grumley baffles many as he constructs a highly-detailed and easy to digest series with this collection of well-paced novels. Each book pushes the limits of scientific possibilities without becoming too ‘out there’, even as some readers whine because it is not cut and dry enough for them. Science fiction has never been my strong suit, but I have made an effort to relax my guard and allowed a moment to learn, which has been effective in allowing me to become highly addicted to this series. I am drawn to the plots with a great deal of action, particularly as they include strong characters. Grumley has discovered a great recipe of captivating plot lines, unique scientific discoveries, and much action to keep the reader fully engaged.

The book offers series fans many characters on which to connect, some being series-long protagonists, while others are minor folk who have stepped into the limelight. I thoroughly enjoy how Grumley has been able to balance development with an ever-complex plot, not losing the reader with so many personalities to juggle. Some great story arcs are emerging, both in the scientific world and personal development of some, especially Alison Shaw and John Clay. I continue to watch their advancements, as well as some of the interaction they have with others, all while trying to keep everyone straight and clear without a formal flow chart. It may be tough, but the challenge keeps me on my toes.

The secondary characters Grumley peppers throughout the story have become the political actors. They serve the primary role of advancing the ego-political clashes that technology that reap, keeping the reader who enjoys that aspect of writing on their toes. While I can never be sure if there will others, an American-Chinese-Russian political triangle can do enough damage and I am keen to see how Grumley will handle it.

Grumley keeps the story strong and the ideas flowing in another novel that interconnects with the previous three. The narrative advanced well and kept the reader seeking more with each chapter, providing moments of education in the scientific aspects of the plot. There is so much to digest, though it is not tossed at the reader simultaneously, permitting a great development over all four novels, though for some it might be a little much to take in. There’s great character development, both in the narrative and strong dialogue, allowing Grumley to craft those the reader will surely enjoy, while there are others who will surely be despised for their own reasons. Grumley again uses a mix of chapter lengths to trap the reader into staying up well into the night, stringing them along at key moments. I remain baffled as to why I am so enthralled with this series, but have no complaints whatsoever.

Kudos, Mr. Grumley, for another strong read. Where are you taking us next?!

"If there was one thing Clay and Caesare had learned from previous missions, it was that when things seemed to be going well…that was just about the time the bottom usually fell out."

Of course things are going to get messy, but we have faith the good guys will pull through!

If you are a fan of Michael C. Grumley's work, then you can't resist reading the next in the The Breakthrough Series, Ripple. You, just like me, simply have to know what heart-stopping action and scientific discoveries await our team of IMIS researchers and protectors.

In Ripple, we have three storylines in one, and all our favorite The Breakthrough Series characters are here to continue their heroic efforts toward getting all mammalian life on the planet communicating:

Allison and Will are with Sally and Dirk, heading to Trinidad.

DeeAnn, Caesare and Clay are with Dulce and Dexter heading to Rwanda where Dian Fossey did her groundbreaking gorilla research.

Sheng Lam is chasing a frighteningly enhanced (by the alien bacterium) Li Na Wei through China.

And we even have a special appearance from Ronin and Palin, the aliens from the dying ecosystem, the race that was taking our water to replenish their own.

If that isn't enough to make you rush out to buy this book, let's add the promise of All-Star narrator Scott Brick for the Audible version -- coming very soon, I hear! And the impending release of Book 5, Mosaic. I know I couldn't sleep, not knowing what's happening with our IMIS team. Could you? Seriously, they're like family by now.

I wish I could give more than 5 stars. I just can't praise this series highly enough.

The plot is incredibly twisted so I won't go there (much), but its the characters that draw you in. After reading four of the books I just love them and feel as if I know them, including the adorable dolphins and gorilla. The action in this book takes place in Trinidad, China, Africa and I've probably missed a few. Our indomitable protagonists are now hot on the trail of a second vault (ah you have to read the books to know what this is) and surmise that it must be in Africa so off they head to protect it. Of course it would be located in one of the most dangerous parts of Africa, Rwanda, and in a location overseen by a nasty vicious warlord who will stop at nothing to protect his own interests. Extreme danger lurks for our intrepid adventurers who risk everything to find and protect the vault.

Meanwhile the Russians have twigged that there is something going on in the waters off Trinidad. They are suspicious about the damaged oil rig ploy and send a stealth submarine to steal whatever the Americans have found there. The rig and the research vessel Pathfinder and thereby also in extreme danger as they are swarmed by Russian Spetznas forces.

Meanwhile Lei Na is still on the run in China but the net is closing in around her.

Meanwhile Neely Lawton has found the drawback of the bacteria extracted from the plants by the Chinese, well, everything comes with a price doesn't it. She is concerned for Lei Na and for any indiscriminate use of the catalyst. There is to be another book (maybe more) but the story is certainly not over yet. The other thing I love is that all the scientific explanations are so plausible. I'm not a scientist but I'm not ignorant either and (apart from the magic potion) a lot of it sounds so damn reasonable.

I know none of this will make sense unless you have read the earlier books but...you won't regret if you do. But please, please start with book 1 - Breakthrough.

Grumley's RIPPLE seamlessly picked up where CATALYST left off. In a desperate race against also desperate nations, the story starts from the word go and you can't put it down. If you're a fan of the first 3 BREAKTHROUGH books, you will absolutely love RIPPLE.

I just finished Ripple, it's the fourth book in the series that begins with "Breakthrough," by Michael C. Grumley. This is one of, if not the best series I have ever read. And I've read a lot of them over the years... Mr. Grumley is a fantastic story teller. More than that, he writes with such intensity, I was unable to put this series (4 books) down until I finished each one. They are all that good. His stories cover so many areas of science that have never been covered before, as far as I know, by any other author. Also, beyond science, the characters are so well developed, they come alive on the page. Their stories, woven within the main story, captivated me on so many levels that I was astounded with his ability to weave such an intricate story lines, yet each one was easy to follow.
Many thanks to Michael C Grunley, for his time, his skill, and his insight into the world of writing a series that transcend the genre while directing me to places I have never gone before...

Another great read!

I continue to enjoy this series and my only disappointment is I have to wait for the next installment! The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is I felt this didn't quite have the strong action aspects the first 3 had and was wanting a bit more about what was in the ship incased in the coral. Looks like that will happen in the next book. So get to work Michael! Love the books! :-)

I love this series! Talking to the animals, science, military, political machinations, aliens, spies, and friendships…. What more could I possibly want in a story? The action keeps it rolling along and the characters, including the dolphins and gorillas, make it stay with me for a long time. If you haven’t read this series pick up the first book and set aside some time. You won’t be disappointed.

Ripple continues the Breakthrough saga

I am not sure how I got into reading this series. Maybe, the idea of communicating with dolphins caught my attention. Then there was also that current news article about work being done towards that end. But, I am glad I got into these books because it has made be think we how great it would be to be able to do it. Since I was around 12 years old I have had an interest in scientific fiction and to tie communicating with dolphins and primates and visits from another planet sold me on continuing to read these books.
This book draws me on to find out what will come next and that seems to be wide open to the author's great imaginative gift of storytelling.

Another great story! And it looks like there is more to come and I'm totally looking forward to it! The Breakthrough Series is so good!

2/9/2023: As I'm reading this I realize I don't remember a single thing from when I've previously read it (wondering if I really did at this point, and why I marked that I did). Anyway, it's a good read. I switched between physically reading and listening to the audio version. It dragged a little, and I felt a little lost at times, but still an enjoyable read.

I love the communication between different species. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Rating: PG-13 :some language, violence
Language: use of deity, some profanity
Recommend: yes

I just finished this book, and it was absolutely excellent. I have no idea how Mr. Grumley can keep the pacing so engaging throughout the book. This is book 4 in the Breakthrough Series, and I'm hooked. If you like fiction, with a handful of science fiction, this is for you. Excellent.

Another very deserving 5-star rating! This incredible series is so good that you won't be skimming in these books. The exact opposite, because you don't want to miss a single word! Really fascinating plots, and characters you care deeply for.

I highly recommend this series for lovers of action/adventure/sci-fi/thrillers, but be sure to start with Book 1~ BREAKTHROUGH.,you won't want to miss any of them!

I believe this is the best series that I have ever read!

I've really been enjoying this series. This fourth book in, I feel quite a connection to the characters and the situations. As I've read the books, the author has an interesting way of writing. Very jumpy. Sometimes the paragraphs are broken up with *** even though the next paragraph is still a continuation of what had just happened, and other times it was a complete switch in storylines. That felt a little inconsistent to me (maybe just a space between paragraphs when continuing on with the same storyline, and the *** when it switches? Visibly showing more of a break?) Sometimes the story would move to such minute details/people/backstories. The author would also often allude to the future, giving things away, which would annoy me somewhat, such as "John didn't know it then, but it was already too late for his actions to make a difference" ...

The books can be a bit complex. So many characters! So much going on. Some technical stuff too, which I don't really dwell on (I'm not fact checking, just enjoying the story. Suspension of disbelief and all that).

But ... this is a series that will have a special place in my reading memory. This book didn't seem to wrap up as completely as the others. Abrupt ending. I do plan on continuing when the next book is available.

I was able to borrow this book for free as part of my Kindle Prime. Lending Library monthly book allowance (for May ... took me a little longer to get through as I had some library books, with due dates, come available and they pushed to the front of my reading queue.)

I've been reading this series the past week, and I finally have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying it and can't wait to read more. Love the development and progression of the IMIS system and the communication between the humans and the lovely dolphins (Sally and Dirk) and Dulce the young orangutan. The animals in this story are absolutely delightful though I am waiting for Dexter the capuchin to come into his own and start communicating with humans as well. Am enjoying all the characters Michael has created in his story building, well, except for the 'bad guys.' It is so sad that I could see the political arena created in the books happening today considering what is happening here and in other countries that have their own agendas. I am also enjoying the science fiction aspect of this series. It is absolutely fascinating. I also can't wait to see what happens to the Chinese girl. I was so glad that Dulce decided to remain with his human 'mother' and can't wait to meet the baby dolphin. Also wondering what Tay will find now that he is trapped in the alien ship and how will he breathe? I'm hoping the reef wasn't too badly damaged and that all the dolphins survived the blast from the oil rig. Well done!

Grumley does a great job weaving a complex story that grows with each book. I love that I never know where the story will go...science, science fiction, suspense, action. It has it all. However, as a Creationist, I don't subscribe to macro-evolution. I really enjoy science fiction, though, and have no qualms with story lines that differ from my beliefs. (Science fiction is all about the fiction, after all.) However, this series doesn't just start with macro-evolution; now in the fourth book, it seems to be the crucial key to the story line. I still enjoy the action and sci-fi parts, but I'm increasingly frustrated with the theme of apes-as-ancestors. I imagine other Christians may feel the same way. I might try Grumley's other books next time to check out a different theme.

Breakthrough series

What's not to like about this book? Michael as woven an excellent sci-fi adventure with govt power plays, Navy SEALS, an incredible computer system that started with communication with other mammals and is now is now turning into a Super AI.
All very well put together very well put together, and a pleasure to read
After reading the first book I had to get the rest of the series, and am anxiously waiting for the next book to come out

The series final book. I can only say this was an excellent series, thought provoking for sure. Fascinating even knowing much of it was just fantasy, but a good author can turn fantasy into fact in the mind of the reader. As a former bubblehead (Submariner) there were parts I especially enjoyed. Just seems there could be fifth follow-on book. One can hope.

Very good

This book takes off where book 3 ends, lots of fine details laid out which sometimes led to a boreing read. Found myself jumping ahead to the action parts, thus the 4 star rating. It just didn't keep my interest like the first 3 books did.

Most Captivating Yet

I already loved this series and eagerly waited for this fourth installment to come out. I was definitely not disappointed. So much is going on with all the key characters, yet Grumley continues to rotate among them to tie all the plot elements together with a great deal of excitement. Now I'm hoping the next book won't be too long behind.

Who wouldn't want to talk to dolphins!

I just finished the last book in this series, Ripple. I fell in love with Sally and Dirk. To be able to actually talk with animals that you know are intelligent. To know that they would be able to save our planet is amazing stuff. Thank you for such a wonderful story. Sincerely, Debora Seifert

Great story!

When I first started this series I fell instantly in love. How could I not? Who doesn't love dolphins? I admit I was a little disappointed when the story seemed to evolve into more of a military series, BUT, I kept reading and I'm glad I did. I initially thought, why does the author have to highlight humans worst characteristics? Why can't this just be a "feel good story"??? Well the author is an Author for a reason. Life is messy and full of polarity...day & night, in & out, up & down, and good and bad. But without those negative poles, we would never fully appreciate the positives. This book, while not actually Real Life, is more believable because of the negative. Humans worst possible traits help us strive to be better, and truly appreciate those moments when humanity rises above and reaches for their Best. Well written, Mr Grumley!!! I'm hooked!! And who knows?! This very well may turn out to be a Real Life Story!! Anything is possible!! 😉

This review will cover books 1 to 4 because I'm lazy.

Rarely, these days a book will introduce a new idea to me and make me go "huh..." Let me digress a moment. Years ago, I read a book that had a major impact on me. It was "If a Lion Could Talk, What Would It Say". This was a nonfiction book and yes, I will spoil it. Beware..lion speak shall be revealed. After going through the many many ways WE humans have of trying to get animals to communicate with US, it took us through a variety of unique animal communication which is outright fantastic in nature. How bats use sonar, whales use low frequency to communicate long distances in water, how hummingbirds "know" where the Yucatan is even though they might not be born there, the way birds map the land, salmon go back to their spawn point to die, etc. We have very little knowledge on how this happens but spend a LOT of time trying to teach a gorilla sign language. OH THE HUBRIS. Ok. Now please go find that book and read it. k?

This series of books, especially the first one, takes this head on with dolphins and monkeys. A big computer has been recording facial expressions, sounds and whatnot and has finally figured out the pattern match. Then the Breakthrough...it tells us the first word the dolphin says "Hello". Dolphins don't learn our language, we finally lay down our king of the jungle crown and try to learn theirs. And it is magnificent.

Now..of course there are evil people who want to exploit this for military gain and stuff happens. But in the end, the beauty of these books is the science fiction of interspecies communication and that there may be something bigger than us.

I like that. I like that a lot.

Oh. What would a lion say if it could speak? It does speak but you don't understand.
