Fumi Yoshinaga

Fumi Yoshinaga (よしなが ふみ Yoshinaga Fumi, born 1971) is a Japanese manga artist known for her shōjo and shōnen-ai works.
Fumi Yoshinaga was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1971. She attended the prestigious Keio University in Tokyo.
In an interview, she said that "I want to show the people who didn't win, whose dreams didn't come true. It is not possible for everybody to get first prize. I want my readers to understand the happiness that people can get from trying hard, going through the process, and getting frustrated."
Little is known about her personal life. She mentions that her favourite operas are those by Mozart in the author's note of Solfege.
She debuted in 1994 with The Moon and the Sandals, serialized in Hanaoto magazine, but was previously a participant in comic markets.
Of Yoshinaga's many works, several have been licensed internationally. She was also selected and exhibited as one of the "Twenty Major Manga artist Who Contributed to the World of Shōjo Manga (World War II to Present)" for Professor Masami Toku's exhibition, "Shōjo Manga: Girl Power!" at CSU-Chico.
Outside of her work with Japanese publishers, she also self-publishes original doujinshi on a regular basis, most notably for Antique Bakery. Yoshinaga has also drawn fan parodies of Slam Dunk, Rose of Versailles, and Legend of Galactic Heroes.

I wish this series proceeded more slowly, time-wise, and with greater depth of personal interactions and story complexities.

"What is this... The exact full-stomach menu from the 20th century when I was in high school..."Argh, no, Shiro! You're my age, aren't you? Next thing you know, you'll be saying "the 1900s" like 1910 and 1980 are the exact same thing!!
Lots to like in this volume. Buying rings (as protection for Shiro when at weddings, though of course Kenji was thrilled), another New Year's with Shiro's mom and dad, going to dinner with Koshinata and his partner. I guess these fairly short episodes come out monthly in Japan, because we've had three New Years in as many volumes.

Bueno, ya llevo unos cuantos tomos y la verdad es que estoy disfrutando la serie bastante. Los detalles de la vida personal de Shiro y Kenji se van desvelando muy poco a poco, en cada capítulo tenemos alguna interacción entre ellos o con las personas de su entorno, pero el protagonismo lo tienen las recetas, los ingredientes, las compras de Shiro en el supermercado...
Los capítulos siguen una fórmula que casi nunca cambia, un par de escenas con Shiro y Kenji de protagonistas en las que interactúan entre ellos o con alguno de sus compañeros de trabajo, seguidas de la búsqueda de ofertas de Shiro en el supermercado, después Shiro llega a casa y cocina (con buen detalle en el dibujo para mostrar ingredientes y técnicas de cocina), al rato llega Kenji, cenan y comentan lo bueno que está todo y algún tema de su día a día... y ya está, eso es esta serie...
¿qué tecla toca esto para que le caiga en gracia a un cuarentón como yo y me lea los tomos de 3 en 3? pues la verdad es que no lo se, pero los tomos van cayendo.

I am taking my time to savor this manga. It’s impossible for me not to smile as I read. Almost feels like I’m recharging my soul.
There’s a recipe I want to try and it’s the banana bread with pancake mix. I’m like whaaaat? I will report back once I make it and if it’s any good.
It’s hard for me to describe just how lovely this story is. It’s slow and soft but it’s so lovely and important and great to read on Pride Month.

Okay, I'm hooked--I love these guys. Shiro getting so frustrated he cooks two days' worth of everything--ha! Also there's actually some vegetarian food in this one and it sounded really good!

Está supeer bonito, me encanta como refleja la relación de dos personas de la mediana edad sin fetiches la verdad me gustaría que mostraran un poco más pero me encanta que al final de cada capítulo siempre están los dos cenando juntos y hablando incluso uno de ellos que no le gusta mostrar su relación siempre que le pasa algo espera que sea la hora de ir a casa a contarle al otro está muy bonito 👍👍🫶🏼

A very solid volume altogether! We get a look at Kenji's backstory and meet some new friends!
Since this is a slice-of-life episodic series, there's not much I can say that I haven't said in previous reviews (other than the review that GoodReads deleted and I couldn't bring myself to write all over again). However, I will write what I think this volume in particular did well and not-so-well compared to its counterparts.
I still really like Shiro's personality. He comes off as callous and uncaring, which is what a lot of fans seem to perceive him as, but I think there might be a little more to it than that. Honestly, I feel like Shiro's just socially awkward and doesn't know how to express his emotions very well. We see in this volume in particular that he still really loves Kenji, even if he has trouble showing it, doing things that he know will make him happy. I think people mistake their comfortable relationship as one that has let the love die out, and that's simply not the case.
The stories are pretty enjoyable in this volume. It's interesting to see the similarities and differences in LGBT culture of Japan compared to America. It's not a subject often delved into by "shonen-ai" manga (although this series has already distanced itself from the lower points of the genre), and I think it's awesome that we get to explore it here.
My only real issue would be the translation. Up until now it's been serviceable, but in this volume it really starts to stumble. At times I thought I was reading an unbeta-ed fanfiction, that's how bad it got! I hope they can get it together by next volume.
I still love this series, and I'll definitely keep writing about it. See you in the next volume!

This was lovely. Maybe the series is hitting its pace, or maybe I'm just getting drawn into its gentle, relaxing flow.
I did love the stories this time around, though. There was a nice through-line about the gay guy Shiro's food-friend's husband decided he'd get along with, simply because they're both gay...and while they both complained about this, they did end up forming a friendship that eventually included both their boyfriends. The "Gilbert" part (which I had to look up once they finally dropped the full reference) was so funny.
One of the things I'm really enjoying is how diverse the characters are; there's no one way to be gay, or a "gay personality" or an appearance you can immediately pick out of a crowd. Lots of people are gay, and Yoshinaga is showing lots of variations.
It is interesting that Shiro is so much more comfortable remaining closeted partly because it has always been simpler for him to blend in with straight guys - because he shares a lot of the same interests. While he had to hide one aspect of himself, he never really had to tone down any other elements, or search for conversational topics, or struggle to relate to the straight guys around him. It doesn't mean he's had things easy, in his youth or currently, but it did seem like something he'd never really considered before. Just good insights from different groups of friends.
I also really liked how eager Shiro was to share the juicy, funny Gilbert gossip with Kenji, and, of course, the rings. As we go on, there's more and more of a sense of how much these two actually like and get along with each other. (One thing I forgot to mention in the previous volume was how Shiro only makes such regularly elaborate meals because of Kenji; when he's left on his own, he goes with pretty simple, not all that healthy cooking. The two of them are really good for each other.)
Shiro's new year's visit to his parents' was great as well. Love that he's starting to be a bit softer around them. Very much love that his parents want to actually meet the guy they think of as their son's husband.
Since Shiro is 46 at this point and I think several years have already passed in five volumes, I wonder how that's going to go for the rest of the series. By volume 20, will they be in their 50s? Is the age/time progression going to freeze at some point?
We're left with a cliffhanger of a dramatic murder trial, which I'm assuming will continue into the next volume, so the next time there's a decent sale, I'll definitely grab another handful of volumes. I'm liking this series more and more.

Time for favorite characters! Hahaha
As much as I love the rather measured pace of the series as a whole, I'm also super happy that I'm at the point where the quirky couple of Mr. Kohinata and "Gilbert" Wataru comes into play because they do provide a delightful contrast for Shiro and Kenji.
I'm still amazed by the fact that each issue still manages to weave in a new recipe into each story. That means a LOT of different dishes across the span of the manga and that's pretty impressive in its own right. I'll probably come around to trying some of these recipes when I find the time.

YESSS THE KOHINATA AND WATARU SAGA BEGINSSS I love these two characters so much, I also love the grocery store lady that Shiro complains about, I really love when Yoshinaga introduces new characters that expand Shiro & Ken's world bit by bit!! It's so much fun!!
Also Shiro being so frustrated about his extra workload that he cooks a ton to relieve the tension, that is so real XD I'm excited for Ken to meet Shiro's parents too! All these arcs are popping up that I remember really enjoying from my first read of this series, so I'm super excited!!

completely forgot wataru was introduced so soon tbh bc i was genuinely thinking that was the almost cheating scene from later LOL but this volume is just really sweet, the rings, kohinata and wataru, and the parents. i think this volume is much slower though because it's a lot of setup, like with shiro's job and their new gay friends. and i really wished the rings wouldve been more relevant after this

There are several pivotal events in this volume, that I enjoyed reading as Shiro and Kenji's lives unfold around the meals that come from their kitchen. Said events center on them being more 'out' as a couple, something that Shiro is reluctant to do. So there are some great feelsy moments here, a good dash of humor, and some chaos, of course.

2021: I decided in January to finally continue reading this series this year and have resolved for myself to point out one thing that I especially liked for every volume. There usually is more than one thing that I enjoy but I want to try to pick out and focus on one and see how it goes for me.

As more details are coming out, I'm getting increasingly fond of Shiro. Favorite line was an aside from a couple of friends, who remark that he's far from a mainstream gay. "He's not a queen; he's a mom."

Delicious sounding recipes again and the introduction of the Wataru-Gilbert diva...I like how the storyline develops naturally with new characters with food as the overarching theme.

In this installment, a friend is semi-forced upon Kenji, which lead to me learning what a "Gilbert" is (thanks, AA). Beyond that, this volume featured the most laugh-out-loud situations for me in the entire series! Particularly tickling were the interactions between Kenji and the grocery store clerk, whom he respects as a worker but feels 'owns' him on the weekly specials. Hahaha, this amuses me even now.
In addition, the relationship between Shiro and Kenji deepens a tad, and I appreciate how Kenji's parents react about him and Shiro.

This was my least favorite in the series so far. It was just okay. The book seemed to focus a LOT more on the food than any sort of plot. The book is very unique in that it is about 80 percent cookbook with a tiny bit of plot thrown in. I will keep reading them because they're entertaining and are light reads.
