Three days until Christmas. Two enemy neighbors. One unlikely forecast.
Cecilia needs a Christmas miracle. She's sure that's what it will take to get her ex-boyfriend to stop looking at her across the bar like she might take him home. The problem is that she might take him home, especially if she has another drink and starts feeling sorry for herself, the way she has been since she spent Thanksgiving eating takeout Chinese and watching sappy romantic comedies alone. Her chances of finding someone -- anyone -- to distract her feel about as likely as tonight’s forecast for snow, unless you count Miles, which she does not.
Miles is the exact opposite of a miracle. He’s a smirky, indie rock frontman with a constant line of women vying to be the subject of his next breakup album. He’s also Cecilia’s enemy neighbor. She’s pretty sure it’s a law of the universe that you shouldn't hook up with your neighbor, enemy or not. This doesn’t stop him from sliding onto the barstool beside her and enticing her into an all-night marathon of highly unorthodox holiday traditions. As Cecilia enters a world filled with partygoers, poptarts, and paper snowflake ceilings, she only knows two things for sure. They won’t fall in love. It isn’t going to snow.
Heather is a full-time corporate professional, part-time yoga teacher, and lifelong late-night writer. She loves red wine, big trees, and how the sky is never the same twice. Like many of her favorite people, she's also that girl who reads everything, even the mission statement stories they print on the back of organic food packages. (Why are those always so heartwarming? She should totally commission them to write her next bio.)
Heather lives with her husband and their houseful of pets in Memphis, TN, where you can usually find them sitting on their front porch, listening to moody 00s pop-punk and plotting their next adventure.
HOW IS EVERYONE NOT READING THIS??? I found this on KU and bought it at 72%, because it needs to be in my permanent library. Delightful, funny, angsty, steamy, and has exactly the type of emotionally vivid character development that makes a story live on after the last page.
Cecilia just broke up with charming-but-empty boyfriend Nate after 2.5 years. They recently dealt with a serious situation (no spoilers!) that showed her what he was made of—tattoos, vague dreams, opinions about food, and an underlying lack of character revealed when life threw something difficult at them.
Her neighbor is Miles—midnight player of piano, teacher-by-day-indie-rocker-by-night, owner of a nosy cat, ugly sweaters, and a bed in which he entertains a (seeming) revolving cast of well-satisfied ladies. Cecilia and Miles are mostly strangers sharing a wall, but over a few years have had a roller coaster relationship with periods of near-miss attempts at friendship.
On a night forecasted for rare Southern snow, they’re thrown together on an all-night adventure involving a party hosted by eccentrics, a snow-walk, confessions, spice, and the dramatic appearance of Cecilia’s ex. Stuff goes heart-tuggingly right, followed by heartbreakingly wrong. READ IT and see how it plays out.
The “now” scenes are dovetailed with flashbacks that absolutely broke me in the best way. I believed in these characters and was “all in” emotionally invested. The prose is beautiful, the chemistry flawless, the story can’t-put-it-down compelling (I read it in one go), the characters unforgettable. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Good luck, Year 2023, topping this one! An absolute home run.
The perfect ratio of nostalgia, Christmas Magic, and unexpected falling in love. The details and unconventional traditions were amazing! I’ll be watching for the next book.
I really enjoyed this holiday novella! The characters are so well developed in this quick read. Cecilia and Miles have been neighbors for years, but she sees him as the enemy. He plays loud music through their shared wall, and he has a revolving door of women that leave from his house. Miles is a musician, so he is up late playing music on his piano. Cecilia has just gotten out of a long relationship that left her feeling alone and sad. She is struggling with moving on, and she has to celebrate the holidays alone for the first time.
When Cecilia is sitting at the bar alone, Miles comes up to sit next to her. She runs into her ex, Nate, and Miles steps in to help her to have a great night. Cecilia realizes that she has so many misconceptions at Miles. He isn't the ladies man that she thinks he is. He's actually a really nice, thoughtful guy. They have a fun night together where Miles shows her some of his holiday traditions, involving found family and lots of holiday fun.
This story turns spicy, and their chemistry is amazing! This story had a lot of depth to it also.
I would recommend this novella if you're looking for something that is naughty and nice for the holidays.
💕 Holiday-ish read (they talk about several!) ❄️ Found family 💕 Trauma healing ❄️ Family dynamic discussions 💕 Baby, it’s cold outside
You would think for someone who read 25+ holiday reads in December, I would be done until the next December. But false. My mind was itching for a cozy, spicy, hot, and cold wintery read: Enter Heather’s book.
I will tell you, it was a much more tumultuous read than I was anticipating. There are some serious topics discussed in this book, so read with caution. That being said, how those heavy topics were handled was with care and great representation to the true, horrific realities in life. Trauma is hard. Recovery from trauma takes time. Seeing that healing process play out in time is helpful.
Cecilia is a brave and resilient character. We follow the story from her perspective, and much like an internal narrator’s thoughts — Cecilia is all over the place. We jump in time and thought and process and it’s perfect. To be in the mind of someone else is harrowing, and to be in our own thoughts is hard — let alone capturing someone else’s train of thinking.
For a read that’s deep, spicy, and has a wonderful epilogue, I recommend this book.
1. Cecilia's working through a trauma and a breakup 2. While being irritated—and attracted—to her neighbor Miles 3. Whose shared wall lets both sides hear more than they ever want to (but it's safe to say, Miles is going to rock her world if she lets him between the sheets) 4. All to a backdrop of an actual holiday snow storm
Will Cecilia and Miles come together? (see what I did there?)
This novel has heart, addresses some trauma issues, and Heather McPeake nails the spice. I also loved the musical element Miles brought to the story and both of the main character's backstories were authentic.
4.5⭐️ 1.5🌶️ This is the perfect Hallmark holiday movie in a book. The FMC Cecilia felt like such a relatable character, I loved how Heather McPeake wove the story between past and present in such a beautiful way that added depth to the story and characters since the main storyline only takes the span of 3 days. It’s a cute heartwarming story to get you in the festive mood.
This was a cute bedtime read. It is a well rounded, well written Christmas rom com story. Also, much saucier than I was expecting but not complaining! I would watch the shit out of this Netflix Christmas movie.
This was the perfect book to read this week because.. I stay in a city where he never snows, so we’re rarely prepared… and we are currently on day 6 of being snowed in..
Cecelia and Miles are next-door neighbors and they have had a few missed opportunities to connect in the past.. however three days before Christmas it’s snows for the first time in over a decade everything changes.
The banter and chemistry between the two of them was perfect, also I loved the Christmas tradition party! I might steal that idea, another thing that felt very relatable was the first few hours/days of been snowed in with somebody is perfect.. then something snaps, and you start to think one of us might not make it lol.
It’s so hilarious that l memphians are still traumatized from the 94 ice storm lol
But I highly recommend reading this! It’s available now!
Calling for a sigh-inducing musician MMC? Calling for out-of-this-world character chemistry? Calling for poetic prose that makes you pause?
This calls for Calling for Snow.
Heather McPeake absolutely NAILS this holiday read that’s so much more than just a holiday read. It’s real and sometimes heartbreaking but also uplifting and beautiful.
This is a book that you can easily lose yourself in and—after trudging through snow drifts—end up at Matilda’s, sipping Old Fashioneds and maybe checking out the hot man at the piano. But that’s not all you’ll find. McPeake will also take you on a meaningful journey with two people whose past loves and lives have left them with wounds that need mending.
I absolutely loved Miles and Cecilia and felt privileged to witness their character arcs from start to finish. I was invested in their happily ever after, and while the story itself was enough to keep me turning the pages, McPeake’s writing had me slowing down to savour the words.
“It’s a perfect kind of day, that smells like fresh cold and tastes like orange bitters.”
Be sure to add this beautiful book to your holiday (or any day!) reading list.
Rounded up from 3.5 stars. This was such an emotional story. I loved the way that Cecelia navigates her grief over her relationship and her miscarriage. I also like the romance between her and miles. I will say the plot was a little confusing at times and I couldn’t tell where it was heading sometimes. I feel like I liked the flashbacks but it would’ve been better as its own chapter instead of embedded within one chapter. I did like how the book ended on chapter 25 (chapter 26 with the epilogue) and for a Christmas book that was great attention to detail!
CeCe and Miles have been neighbors, and enemies, for years. But when her ex is back in town for Christmas Miles might be able to provide just the distraction she needs.
Read if you like: contemporary romance, Christmas romance, fast paced romcoms, neighbor feuds, flashback storytelling, that ‘quirky but real’ feeling, unpacking trauma, sweet & slow burn, two people who need the reason to fight for love.
CeCe is fine. Alone on Christmas, just fine. Until her ex shows up at her favorite bar and keeps staring at her. Her willpower is waning and there are distractions in sight. Until her off-limits neighbor, Miles, takes a break from the stage and slides his way into escape route status. Together, they brave the unlikely forecasted snow, and have a holiday adventure that has CeCe replaying memories of the past few years and seeing herself, and Miles, in a new light.
Oh, my, holiday heavenly delight. This book is so much fun! First of all, I love that this is definitely at holiday book, but its also an any time of the year book. Christmas is the catalyst but we go through so much with CeCe in all the seasons of the last couple years and her relationships with Miles, her ex, and her family. I’m not sure how Heather packed so much into a mere 225 pages!
You get a cozy romance with all the feels, spice, angst, longing, and more! AND watch CeCe and Miles figure out what they will and won’t do for love. Holidays are tough! Family is tough! This book tackles the toughness of the season, and life, and leaves you feeling loved and hopeful in a completely relatable and understated tone. It’s so good! Talking about it makes me want to read it again!
