Coco Curse - A sweet Christmas murder mystery with a touch of romance. When Phillipa is murdered at the local Christmas cookie fundraiser its up to Rudie a witch with a special gift for seeing the dead to solve her murder. With so many suspects can she find the right one with the help of her crush Archer or she doomed to be forever haunted by her ghost
Solstice Spirit - A cute and enjoyable sequal to Coco Curse. Rudie's gift is her ability to see ghost she's the only one in town who can until the spoilt rich girl in town Haley gets paid a visit. Turns out her long lost aunt is sending her a warning can the two join forces and finger it out before its too late for Haley
Mistletoe Mojo - An adorable murder mystery. With Rudie and Archer's wedding right around the corner the last thing they need was a not only a series of burglaries which included her new friend Haley's places but a murder as well. The ghost of the caretaker seemed to hint two people were involved in his murder plus leaving a sizeable fortune to his ex-wife. Something just doesn't see right at the children's home will Rudie be able to find the killer and this burglar before her wedding or will the stress of everything become too much.
Book 1 - Cocoa Curses Rudie Hollybrook's story is in three parts in the Winter Witches of Holiday Haven Multi-author series. I purchased them as a boxset and I am reviewing them individually.
Rudie and her sisters run the Hollybrook Funeral Home, having taken over when their parents died. Rudie is very active in the communitee, working with Santa's Little Helpers a volunteer group working to raise money for local charities. It's at one of those venues that this story opens.
They have a Christmas Cookie Chalet at the Christmas Market and today, Rudie along with Dr. Dash, Nikolas Sage, John Merriman, and Hayley who had managed to put herself in charge were working that first day. Hayley is Rudie's nemesis and assigned her to trash duty, so she was running back and forth to the bins across the way next to the tower. She spent little time in the Chalet, so she wasn't there when the Chair and Co-chair of the organization arrived. Connie Blitzen and Phillipa Lightstep while always arguing over something, were both devoted to making every event a success.
Phillipa had taken a drink of her cocoa and suddenly collapsed, and no number of spells from Dr. Dash could revive her. I should mention here that Rudie can see and communicate with ghosts. Phillipa's appears to her and demands she find her killer, or she'll haunt her until she does.
Now on top of everything she normally does, Rudie has to figure out how to find a killer. One of the first things she needs is a suspect list the next is someone to help her sort everything out.
The first people she puts on her list are Phillipa's granddaughter Noelle and her boyfriend Xander. She found the whole of the consultation for the funeral to be a bit off. Of course, she'd have to add everyone at the Cookie Chalet when Phillipa died as well.
Archer Olsen is the owner and editor of the local paper, Hark the Herald. Rudie frequently visits him with obituaries to be printed, and she even flirts a little. He serves her favorite coffee in a Santa mug while they do business. I think he likes her too.
From the funeral to the investigating, this is a page turner. Each little hint leads to more questions until the answer is found.
In spite of the murder, this is a fun read with just a touch of romance.
I'm already reading the next book.
Book 2 - Solstice Spirits While Holiday Haven is really close to the North Pole, they still, with the help of magic, celebrate the Summer Solstice with a beach pool party. Complete with sand and hot weather, and a wave pool.
It's in the middle of this town wide event that Rudie sees what she thinks is Hayley her nemesis, in the water wearing a glittering dress, tiara and a sash holding a bouquet of dead roses. She's more than a little startled when Hayley calls her name from directly behind her very much alive.
When Rudie looks back the specter is gone. Unfortunately, not for good. It's the middle of the night when Hayley comes pounding on her door, hysterical over the appearance of a ghost.
Investigation a cold case isn't easy however, surprisingly Hayley is cooperative. Archer is very helpful with this, well at least in finding newspaper articles about Hayley's great aunt, but he's been acting strangely toward Rudie lately.
It's clear right from the start that Hayley has no clue as to how to treat employees. She seems to just take what her father's always said as the way things are supposed to be.
The Pettigrews go back generations in service with Leona the one currently working in the house barely making ends meet as she cares for both Hayley and her granddaughter Penelope. Her daughter has gone to the North Pole for work to supplement the finances.
I love the way this plays out, with the ghost of Holly Swift leading the way to Hayley's redemption.
I do love these creative retellings of the classics. There's suspense, laughter, tears, romance and so much more in this book.
Book 3 - Mistletoe Mojo Someone's stealing from all the businesses in Holiday Haven. Then the night of the Santa's Little Helper's Christmas party that things change. First Hayley's home is burglarized, and then the strange request for the charity's donation check be delivered after the event, regardless of the time. It's when Rudie's delivering that check to the orphanage, that things go up a notch. Now there's the mystery of the stolen items and a murder to solve. On top of that Rudie's wedding to Asher is just a few days away.
As the clues to this mystery unfold, we get to see more kindness from Hayley, the chaos before a wedding, and plenty of surprises. This is the perfect end yet beginning for Rudie and Asher.
So warm, so Christmassy!!! I highly recommend this collection! I you like great Holiday reads with lots of warmth and a whole lot of magic, then look no further!
Per book: 1 Cocoa Curses - Christmassy, wintery, full of charm: what a fun read!
One of my favorite parts of the book is when Rudie meets ghost Phillipa for the first time. The book has that lighthearted tone that I so love. A fun read! The mystery was great, I only solved it just a few sentences before Rudie did, LOL. And that Christmassy vibe is almost tangible! I loved the setting, and I adored the characters! I LOVED Rudie, she might be one of my favorite characters ever! But that’s what Ms. Johnson does best: writing characters who worm their way into your heart. And Archer, what a lovely guy!
And there may or may not have been a few tears at the end, because that was just so heartwarming!
It was literally EVERYTHING I want in a cozy! It was a YAY book for me, meaning that while I was reading, I kept thinking YAY!
2 Solstice Spirits - So heartwarming!
This story could melt the heart of a snowman! Such a heartwarming book, full of all the Christmassy feels of love, hope, and fun! There’s a mighty lesson in this book (don’t worry, it’s in a warm and lighthearted way!) and it was a bit Dickens-like. I loved it!!! A modern Christmas Carol! Rudie is such a kind and caring person and I LOVE that about her! Real richness lies in kindness, caring, love. Love is the message and this story filled me with hope and joy.
A 60 year-old case. A cold case, North-Pole-winter-cold! A warning from the past… Sorry Rudie, but I loved the visions, I know you didn’t like them but it was great to read about! The story doesn’t go how I thought it would go, very surprising! What a warm book, what an amazing cozy!!!
3 Mistletoe Mojo - The last book in this series and it was awesome as ever!
Sad to be saying goodbye, because it was once again SUCH a great book! So warm, so Christmassy, and I love Rudie to bits for her kindness. And her wedding! Oh, you just HAVE to read it!!!
As always, I love these books by this author. They set in the wonderful village of Winter Haven. Rudie, along with her two sisters, Vixen and Donna, own the only funeral home in town. This makes her feel like she's an outsider in a place where everyone else has an upbeat job. To make matters worse, she can see ghosts. In Cocoa Curses, Rudie volunteers at her club's Christmas Market when she sees a woman die. Later, her ghost comes and tells Rudie she will haunt her for eternity if she doesn't find out who murdered her. Along with a handsome report, Archer, who works at the "Hark the Herald" newspaper, she starts investigating even though she's never done it before. There are lots of twists in this mystery and I figured out who did it just as Rudie did. And, like her namesake, she learns that she has a unique gift and people do love her. Its a fun book to read with the added puzzle of figuring out the names of all of the reindeer the characters are named after. Some are obvious and others not so much. And, that's just the first book. The other two are as equally entertaining. This season is the perfect time to read these fun books. Don't wait. Get them while you can at this price. You won't be sorry.
Book One: Cocoa Curses 4 stars This book felt like it was written to target a young adult audience. All of Rudie’s anxiety made it hard to get into the book at first. But I’m glad I stuck with it. She did all the right things throughout the story and had wonderful support from family and friends. A heartwarming read that was well worth the slow start.
Book Two: Solstice Spirits: 4 stars This book held my interest from the first sentence. The plot was a nod to Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. First time I’ve read a cozy mystery based on a classic. This was very enjoyable. Also, there is a dog sled scene that had me laughing out loud. That is all I’m going to tell you.
Book Three: Mistletoe Mojo: 4 stars What a wonderful ending to this Christmas trilogy. Imagine a wedding in a funeral home! I’m not saying anymore. If you want a feel good time, this set is definitely for you.
In the town of Holiday Haven, next to The North Pole, the residents are either witches or other paranormal creatures and the whole town is seasonal all year round. Rudie and her sisters run their family funeral home and she can see ghosts. Romance blooms between her and newspaper owner Archer, which all comes to a head at the first dead body, where it turns into a cosy paranormal crime series. The characters are fun, the whole atmosphere literally magical and Christmassy and I adored the lot.
Rudy and her sisters are the snowy towns undertakers but they are different
this series is about three sisters and how they have taken over their parents funeral parlor. Dividing the chores among themselves. They each have partners except the oldest, Rudy. The stories center on her and how tthey all mix with the town. It also follows Rudy’s love life and how they get involved in murder on a regular basis. The stories are told with humor and quirkiness and a delightful read.
All 3 stories were full of mystery, friendship, family, and love. Cute and heartwarming with a splash of suspense in Holiday Haven has Rudie as one of my favorite main characters. I need to know what happens next. Cocoa Curses sucked me in, and I can't get enough of the quaint little village and all its people. If you like a little mystery and Christmas, this is the perfect holiday read for you.
This author has a way of creating lovely places and populating them with interesting and likable people, then adding a mild mystery for the engaging main character to solve. In this series, sometimes the mysteries involve murder, but since Rudie can see and speak to ghosts, death isn’t as final as usual. There’s a Dickensian sense of justice, and the criminals are not fine people who deserve another chance or even sympathy. An easy, pleasant read.
I love all of Erin Johnson’s books. She really authentically depicts these characters and dives you into the book. Rudy was the main character in the book and she did an excellent job with her character and it was a fun mystery story which I read faster than some of the other books as it went so quickly. if you want some fun light mystery reading at night before you go to bed as I have done read her books you will love them.
I am sick and tired of writers who seem to think that doormats make for good leading characters. And that mean people are somehow redeemable by them. I guess it worked for C. Dickens, but even then it was a pretty poor premise. It is lazy writing and I find it boring. Not worth the (free) purchase price. It did have some potential, but foolish investigators make for boring reading too. It’s a cliche, and not an interesting one.
I really enjoyed my time with Rudie, her sisters, and others there were mysteries to solve and a sweet romance that get her attention. You love the characters in this book, the mysteries, and the sweet, clean romance. You will get lost in the world and the characters this author created for the Winter Witches. I recommend reading.
I really enjoyed reading all 3 of the mysteries in this book! The characters are really likeable, and the plots are all different. The growth and progression of the characters is an added plus, as it was great to see how they all developed from story to story. I highly encourage you to read this book, as it makes for fabulously entertaining holiday reading.
What a glorious Yule wedding for Archer and Rudy! It is nice having this boxset, to be able to follow the story all at once. The magical wedding was perfect, but the retelling of the Christmas Story in the second book will be with me for the rest of the Yule season. Don't miss the magic in this boxset!
Rudie and her sisters own and run a funeral home. Rudie also, not only sees ghosts , she talks to them. Sometimes ghosts wanted to leave sweet words for their loved ones. But, one wants Rudie to find her killer. If you enjoy clean cosy Mysteries, you'll love these books.
I love how easy these stories flow with love, friendship and intrigue. Holiday Haven is a community set near the North Pole they magically deal with the cold and mysteries with genuine small town connection. This series was a fun, quick read that had all the feels. I loved it.
It’s the season for mysteries. Very sweet and entertaining… if you want to wet your Yuletide whistle on some mysteries, enjoy. They’ll hit you right in the sweet tooth.
I picked this box set out to read during the holidays and I am so glad I did. I hope Erin will write more in this series. I loved the characters and want to find out what lies in the future for Rude and Archer, her sisters, Haley, and the town people.
I would give the first book 3 stars. The overdone holiday names seemed really cheesy to me. The second book I would give 4 stars. My only criticism there is that it had too many similarities to A Christmas Carol. The third book was charming and original; 5 stars.
The stories in the 3 books were just great I love how it ended love the characters I felt like I was right there with all The characters in the story It was a great box set
I loved the main character in these books. It was a total left-field thing that she was a funeral director, and we didn't skip over her responsibilities to her work or her family in her single-mindedness to solve a crime. Overall a fun read.
This collection was so full of life! You thing you're done with the surprises and then there's another! They're well thought out and the plots are fun and tasteful. Can't wait to read more from this author!
Who knew that murder mysteries would be wonderful feel good books! Hope aboard a wonderful ride to Holiday Haven, where Christmas is loved and celebrated.
I love mystery novels and these novels were full of mysteries with a magical twist. These mystery novels were fast-paced with twists and turns and kept me reading until I finished reading them.
I enjoyed this series. I felt like I was right there with Rudie and the others when I was reading. It was difficult to put down. I really liked the mystery as I tried to figure out the cases with them. VERY interesting setting which added to the story. Thank you.
I liked these books. They are funny and interesting. I’m going to find more like these because I really like them. I didn’t want them to end. It’s hard to explain, they just make you happy.
Interesting characters and story lines. I enjoyed reading all three books. I will be reading more of Erin Johnson books. I will be recommending her books to others.
What a fun set of holiday themed books! I enjoyed reading along as Rudie solved mysteries while seeing her relationship with Archer progress. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Johnson.
