Her Marriage Lessons

Rate this book
Though the idea of a bare bottom spanking over her husband's knee is horrifying for new bride Mandy Williams, the thought of being taken firmly in hand is also terribly, shamefully arousing. So arousing that she agreed to spend a week trying out life in Rocky Falls, a small town where men aren't afraid to take off their belts when their wives need a stern reminder of their place.

But Mandy's new life will involve more than just a sore backside when she's been naughty. Over the coming days she'll learn what it means to be well and truly mastered, and if the wet spot on the panties her husband just pulled down is any indication, she'll fit in just fine in Rocky Falls.

Publisher's  Her Marriage Lessons is a stand-alone book in the Shamefully Courted series. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.

Emily Tilton

Emily Tilton, whose books have hit number one on Amazon in six different erotica categories, wishes she could live out her fantasies of submission the way her characters do.

Emily's erotica is a narrative version of her nearly lifelong quest to reconcile her submissive erotic orientation with her ethics. She writes erotic romance, but her books are always frankly and unashamedly about sex, because writing about sex helps her understand that fundamental part of her life better. She hopes maybe it does the same for her readers.

Over the many years since Emily became aware of her sometimes unbearable craving for spanking, ravishment, and all the shameful things that go with it, she has tried to come to terms with that craving in more ways than she can count. The first of the ways was by reading, voraciously, every piece of BDSM erotica she could find.

Eventually, she read "Story of O." As is reflected throughout her work, it changed her life, though the change has been gradual, and continues to this day. The idea that other women might share the lusts she has by turns been ashamed of and defiantly proud of, that a woman like the real Pauline Réage might write so beautifully of those lusts, and work them out so thoroughly and even pitilessly on a character, put Réage's famous pencil in her right hand. Or, to put it in the terms of EXPLORATIONS, which she considers her magnum opus, it put her left hand on the keyboard of her laptop and her right hand in her lap, if you know what she means. Emily started to write spanking stories.

Mandy is shocked by the idea of a spanking by her husband’s hand but when a couple recommends, they visit Rocky Falls. Mandy will discover what it truly means to be disciplined by her husband. Will this help to save their marriage? Fast-paced read with loads of drama and sizzling scenes. I liked it.

DNF

This book wasn’t for me.

Yes, I knew what the story was about before I started reading, but what I read made me angry. First, it was how he kept threatening to divorce her if she didn’t agree with what he said. The plot of this book didn’t seem very romantic to me. It was more like how every abusive relationship started. He was forcing her sexually without her full consent. And she wasn’t told what to expect. It was more like luring a young wife to join a cult. I know it’s fiction, but this one made me uncomfortable.

I normally really enjoy a hot spanking story, but this didn’t do it for me.

Spoilers for the first 10% of the book.

The h clearly has a trauma response to sex because of her purity focused upbringing. She praises her husband for his patience but he already has enough of waiting on her after three days of no sex?? He threatens to divorce her or to try things his way. He makes her signs a contract, while threatening to divorce her (!!!) if she doesn’t, while she has no ideas what she is sighing up for. She isn’t told the rules until after signing the contract. To me this is not sexy. Forcing a traumatised girl to follow all your (sexual) commands when she could not give her full consent, because she wasn’t told the rules until after she signed the contract, while threatening to divorce her, feels too much like abuse to me to be able to enjoy reading this.

Therefore I couldn’t truly get into the story. It made me really uncomfortable.

I also felt like he was totally gaslighting her. *There is nothing weird about the Franklin’s! What are you talking about* = gaslighting

It felt like they joined a cult. I think that cults are fascinating, but I don’t think that forcing vulnerable women to join a cult with elements of sex is entertaining and sexy.

Nothing wrong with the writing. I have really enjoyed other books from Emily in the past, it was just this storyline that I did not like.

Waaaay too much inner dialog. It goes back and forth in detail through the entire thought process all around. There’s multiple *chapters* of build up for everything, telling us what’s going to happen and what just happened over and over in endless circles. And then a scene happens, and then there’s pages and pages and pages and pages recapping from each characters perspective. And from the perspectives of MCs multiple personalities, which I think was an artistic choice but, oh boy. Strap in for her talking back and forth to herself in italics.

It also felt very mind-ready at times “He had narrowed his eyes, and I could feel him studying me, as if he had his hands on the sides of my face as he gazed into it, trying to figure me out—no, not just trying to figure me out… trying to figure out how to make me happy… us happy.” Honestly? The least of my problems here, but still insufferable.

There’s also so much focus on her virginity and how painful and awful and horrifying the first time was, which is an issue by itself. But it gets worse. Now, I don’t have any issue reading d/s or non-con, but the entire reason he decides to start a d/s relationship is he is so terrible in bed on their wedding night that she’s terrified to ever let him touch her again. So she makes excuses, eventually he threatens divorce if she doesn’t let him do whatever he wants to her, starting with a whipping. Even for non-con, punishment because “you didn’t have sex with me because I hurt you” feels low.

Anyway, Rick the Dick really just sucks throughout. Not a single redeeming quality. I don’t consider 20/28 to be that terrible of an age gap, but he makes it feel creepy the entire time. He also seems to bounce back and forth between two totally different people, but at least they don’t each get their own voiceovers.

Like I mentioned, there’s this weird multiple personality thing going on for Mandy. It’s supposed to be the way of showing consent while she also doesn’t want it. There’s the virgin, the whore, the brat, and… the good wife? And they all want vastly different things and have vastly different thoughts and voices so it’s jarring and hilarious as each one gets to give their input each scene (over and over and over and over and over and over).

There’s buildup and titillation and there’s this. It honestly just feels like the author had to meet a word count and no editor could be arsed to say “cut 70% of this because it’s literally just repeating things”.

Another not-sexy-but-trying-to-be-dom-moment is when Mandy is quite literally blocked from calling her husband during the day so as not to disrupt his golfing. I just… I feel like we leave the sexy bossy dominant territory when the government actually disables your phone for such a dumb reason. The government knowing how much *butt stuff* you do is also not sexy lol. Idk, maybe take Big Brother out of sex? But I guess that's kinda the whole world building, so, maybe just not for me?

It has a brief mention of hitting kids, as part of this old fashioned traditional town, and yikes. Leave that out of a BDSM book and don’t hit your kids ffs. That alone should’ve been a DNF but I had like 2 chapters left.

Oh, and because it spends so much time spinning in circles, the first 23/32 chapters take place in the same 24 hours.

The action in this story (excluding the physical exertions in the bedroom) takes place in the minds of Mandy and Rick, two newlyweds exploring the dynamics of their marriage. Their honeymoon does not start off well and, if not for the intervention of Scott and April, could well have ended in disaster. In due course they go to the town of Rocky Falls, a New Modesty Community to get on track. For Mandy there is great inner turmoil as she struggles with who she is, who she should be, who she needs to be and who she wants to be. The constant juxtapositions within her mind (good/bad, chaste/slut, modern/traditional, pain/pleasure, etc.) play out with commentary from her “inner voice”. For Rick it is an opportunity to confirm who he is and how their marriage will be. Deep within, he is a Dom and she is a submissive. The pace of the story is not fast, in fact it is intentionally slow so we can savour it. The building anticipation of what is surely to come is almost akin to edging the reader! Ms. Tilton is an accomplished writer of emotional and physical eroticism and this is first class example of that. 5 Stars

Our heroine is conflicted about marriage, so she arranges for a trial run, so to speak. Our hero is very strict with her and she finds it rather embarrassing, but that is not her only reaction. Seems this might be exactly what she needs.

This is a standalone in a series that shares theme only. No prior reading is required to enjoy this one.

This is an erotic romance featuring domestic discipline (spanking). The story on the short side, well written and easy to read. The characters are well developed and actually rather realistic and down to earth, something we don't always get in the author's other series. The plot moves along at a nice pace, and provides us with plenty of steam along the way. Overall, the story was very entertaining and I continue to look forward to more stories in the future.

Highly recommended.

Rick and Dee
When Dee said I do she did not expect what will happen between her and Rick. When on their honeymoon they meet an older couple and this meeting is going change everything. Dee learn just what it means to be an old fashion wife when they go to Rocky Falls. Like all of this author’s works in this society it is very steamy and may not be everyone taste, but it was a good story about a married couple. I enjoyed seeing the journey Rick and Dee made in their marriage. I did receive a free copy of this book from Booksprout and voluntarily chose to review it.

Her marriage lessons

This book though is much better than (His Blushing Bride), still focuses on her perceived shame and the fact she isn't mature enough to make a marriage. So she comes a cross as the old adage (" oh my you really do need the house to fall on your head, don't you). And leaves you with the feeling that she gets what she needs more of to grow up rather than filling you with lust.

Glad I didn't pay for it.

I now remember why I stopped reading this author. To me at times the way this is written it feels like force. Its stories like the way this is written that can give the wrong minded person to feel he can abuse . Too much beat her ass and not enough loving.

Another great read in the series - works fine as stand alone. I liked the characters, and the book was well written.

Naughty wife

I’m conflicted on this Emily Tilton book. More psychological thoughts in the level of submission needed for the wife than I expected. Loads of smexy times but more clinical feeling. Still a great read.

The only thing that this book had going for it,was how Dee resisted the punishment. Other than that it wasn't that good
