From one of the world's leading historians comes an ambitious and sweeping history of the world in the 20th century. Ranging from the world wars to the traumas of decolonization and the technological triumphs of the space race, A History of the 20th Century documents the events, the characters, the ideologies, the cultural transformations and the dramatic politics of these turbulent times.
Jeremy Black examines subjects as diverse as the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression, the Cold War, the Iranian Revolution and the birth of the internet in a compelling narrative. Keen to highlight the role of demographics, the environment, culture and technology as well as the better-known tales of political rivalries, he brings a new perspective to this most important subject.
Poorly written. Summarises to the point of vagueness, yet still finds the word space for woke editorialising. A worthy project, it's a shame this is the result. Two stars because it looks nice.
A decent condensed read. It was a bit too concise at times and difficult to keep track of all the different events, but I realise that it's almost an impossible task for the author to put the history of the entire century in 250 pages so yes he deserves some slack.
P.s. I would like to mention that the history of the creation of Israel was very summarised and almost misleading in my opinion. (Speaking as someone who does know a bit of the history of that period and the Zionist movement)
I think that for $13 approx, you cannot get a compressed review of the most important events of the 20th century if you want an escape to the Internet and Wikipedia.
