‘Blood is forever’
Imagine that someone has the power to make you do his or her will – and won’t get caught because *you* are the criminal. That someone can extort you to do anything willingly so that you are not “bloodpushed” into doing something else. I could not fathom anyone having that kind of hold over me. Thank goodness, I’ve never joined a witches’ guild…
Some sage advice from the author that could possibly come in handy IRL:
‘A good disguise protects better than armor.’
Now for the rest of the series: ‘Daughter of Flood and Fury’, ‘Witch of Wealth and Ruin’, and ‘Rebel of Riddle and Woe’ (expected around mid-Jan).

Blood is Forever
This story follows a young rebel named Gaxna,who once trained as a witch. But after learning the cons of the profession, she escapes and helps others do the same. Three years later, she wakes to find they have called her blood to do their bidding. Can she resist their call? Or will they use her to do their dirty work once again?
This is a good story. Aside from some grammatic and spelling errors (this is an old eARC that I recieved a month or so ago), it was quick and simple to read. I look forward to reading the main story.

Thief of Smoke and Sorrow is an absorbing prequel to Jacobs’ Tidecaller series. Jacobs paints an intriguing portrait of Gaxna, a girl who joined the witches of the city to escape deep poverty. The story of her internal and external struggles toward self-determination and self-respect is a very human story translated to a fictional world. Her cry for freedom and justice is an echo of the troubled world around us.
I look forward to reading more in the Tidecaller series.

This novella puts a spin on the YA canon as out thief is a rescuer of girls who have been pushed into servitude for the witches. This is a strong allegorical tale of power versus powerlessness - money, greed, and politics between the witches and the monks have no winners in the civil war that has lasted for a decade.

The book kept me wondering what was going to happen next. This book has a nice flow to it, with several twists and turns. All in all, was a very enjoyable read with interesting characters.

May 15, 2024Thief of Smoke and Sorrow (Tidecaller Chronicles Book .5) , my fourth read from author Levi Jacobs, an 80 page story that I read in about an hour. The lead-in book in an excellent series with a kick-ass female lead. Enjoyable, well-written Coming of Age Fantasy. I was given a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily reading & reviewing it. The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I'll definitely be reading more from this author. Now I need to wait for Queen of Blood & Blasphemy: An Epic Fantasy Adventure (Tidecaller Chronicles Book 4) to be published(RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
