Kinsley and the Coventry Crew have to contend with a new Warlock family causing trouble around town. To absolutely no one's surprise, there's another murder.
Brighton and Meri want to pin the killing on Nissa Void, but Kinsley isn't so sure. It's not that she wants to defend the terrible Warlock woman, but she does want to get real justice.
Sara Bourgeois is a Midwesterner through and through. She spends her time writing, reading, herding cats, and standing in her driveway during tornado warnings. (You can't see them from the basement.)
This is an entertaining paranormal cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Kinsley is the leader of her coven of witches in the small town of Coventry. Her family goes back generations as the witches who run the town. There is a veil over the town that hides magic from the mortals. Kinsley’s husband is the local sheriff And Kinsley who owns a donut shop and a sundry shop in town has two children and one crazy family. Her and her familiar Mary a black cat always ends up getting involved in whatever recent mishap is going on around town. Almost always there is some magical Thai in that gets them involved. recently a family of warlocks moved into town and is causing problems. Now something else is going on and Kinsley must find out what’s causing it. Read on and find out.
If you haven't read the previous book, STOP go back and read it. It contains important information.
In the last book we find the Voids, a warlock refugee family, has been placed in Coventry by the Paranormal Affairs Bureau (PAB), they are already causing problems. Then there's Lilith and the results of her renewal spell, she's just so different.
As this book opens, Kinsley is making breakfast for the girls when Bonkers comes screaming fire as he runs to the living room. Seeing an orange glow in the yard she goes outside with Meri. With Meri and Bonker's help Kinsley puts out the flames, but the garden is destroyed.
The PAB has noted the complaint from Kinsley, but they found the reasoning to be justifiable. Her father Remi has told her they tend to be pro-warlock in all their decisions.
All the other ways to get rid of them have to take into consideration Lydia. She's just a child and although born to warlocks doesn't mean she has to be one.
Kinsley is even becoming friends with Adi the new psychic in town. She was a fake when she arrived but being near the lei line, she is finding real abilities. Kinsley is hoping to guide her a bit and in doing so protect the community. They are enjoying coffee and breakfast sandwiches in Adi's shop, The Psychic Experience, when Kinsley gets a not so pleasant surprise.
Her ex-husband, the reason she returned to Coventry entered the shop. Before she goes outside to talk to him Adi tells her of the vision she sees.
Later that day she goes out to get the mail and finds Gavin's body in the road in front of her house. Looking at him there was no sign of trauma but there was a lot of blood, and he was clutching a starstone in his hand. That didn't make sense, he wasn't a witch. She took the stone and called Thorn, although he would have his deputies handle the investigation. The big question who killed him?
Once everyone was gone, her thoughts went back to the fire that morning and the shadow she saw head into the trees. She investigates with Meri and finds a black stone skull that pulses with dark magic. Convinced it was Nissa Void's she goes to confront her with it. That doesn't go well either.
The ghost of Brighton's brother Brody shows up and delivers a message that impacts both Remi and Brighton. Not to mention upsets the whole family since he shouldn't have been able to enter town at all.
There's a lot that happens as Kinsley and Meri investigate Gavin's death. Not to mention the waning magic. The thing is everything seems to stem from when the Void family was placed in Coventry.
Plenty of suspense and intrigue topped off with banter between Meri and Bonkers.
I have loved this series but unfortunately this book seems to be written by a ghost writer or something. It is not the writing style of the previous books and not in a good way. Meri was a great character but this is not the Meri of the past. Unfortunately the filling of space with pages describing making breakfast and no real plot line was disappointing, unimaginative and boring. I only gave this a 3 out of loyalty to the series. I hope the next book comes back on track. I don’t like to write negative reviews as I know usually a lot of effort goes into a book. But there is just something really off here. I’m so sad. This is not the normal representation I have loved of Sara’s work.
Kinley's slimy ex-husband is murdered, and there were too many people he cheated and ill-used to narrow the field. He was an equal opportunity scum-bag. Unfortunately, Kinley feels compelled to solve the killing and meets some shady characters who could do her harm. And, something is wrong with the coven's power source.
This book has some bright spots, but I kept wondering why Kinley didn't scry to find anything or anybody. It became distracting. She was confused too much of the time.
Foods other than bacon and pancakes were consumed within this book--for the record--in case you began to wonder.
Much better than some of the previous books have been. This one ended well instead of abruptly. I do miss Kinsley's old friends though. She seems to have isolated herself to only family since becoming a mom. I am curious to see what comes of the Lilith story since there was a very sinister sounding warning in this book. And I'm curious how Kinsley will deal with being the target of this nasty warlock woman. Looking forward to the next book.
Not as good as usual Story is okay, and I'll keep reading the series, but I am tired of typos and inconsistency of flow of the story. The last few pages jumped around like it was never read after being finished to be sure it was orderly. When Briar arrived it was fine, but then skipped ahead to the future, then back to the present. Not as many repetitions of adjectives and verbs so that was better. The books still need a good proofreader to clean up errors.
Again, I am amazed by this series. From the beginning, you can feel the evolution of Kinsley as she finds her way, sometimes stumbling and sometimes running smoothly. This time around, Kinsleys past has come home to roost, but something else is also happening that could affect Coventry forever.
This is the eighteenth book in this series. I do like the series and the world it is set in. It's just that sometimes it seems more like a report than a story. There seems to be emotional involvement in the narrative. I will continue to check out the series and hope to become more invested in the outcome.
Families are hard. Kinsley has a large complex family. Family difficulties come with any size family. Her first marriage was to a bad seed who came back into her life stirring up trouble. He succeeded when he turned up dead in front of her house. Turned out he had family problems, money problems, blackmail problems and that was on top of her work problems.
Arc review I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. In Coventry Kinsley has a new crime to solve .Only this time she needs to solve her ex husband murder . cute
I love this series and this installment terrific. Problems, magic, and mystery combine to keep you reading. The ending is a cliffhanger that makes you hope the next installment comes out very soon. Great read.
I am so glad I started this series! I love these stories I love the characters I love the questions I love finding the answers these are great reads, really great!
What the heck is happening in Coventry?? Or should I say with Lilith? Other than solving the murder, I think we were left with tons of questions. I can’t wait to read the next book. Hopefully we’ll find more answers!
Well another interesting story. It seems that Lillith is not who she use d to be! I have a really bad feeling that this is not going to end well. But who knows! I'll Find out soon!
The 18th book of the next book!e Familiar Kitten Mysteries, Hide and Shriek, was dark and foreboding. It was so very mysterious. I had to finish it in one sitting. On to the next book!
A new family moves to Coventry causing concern to Kinsley. Questions arise about aunt Lilith. Another death raises even more questions. An extremely intriguing story with twists and turns that will keep you reading.
The story meanders and explains almost too much. The writing is I guess for younger people with all the explaining. The story runs along to the end. A little more action would be nice
Each book in this series gets better and better. Things aren’t always what they seem to be in Coventry. You never know who you’ll be introduced to in each book.
