After Shizuka is bitten by a zombie, Akira and the gang place their faith in Tsurumi. To save her, the vaccine researcher will have to gamble on their trump card, Izuna, the girl immune to the infection. Later, a military-grade helicopter appears over the pharmaceutical plant that the gang is using as a vaccine lab and a special forces unit descends upon the building. What frightening secret could they be after?
Shizuku is once bitten, might die! While the gang deals with this situation, there’s the question of what that group of mercenaries is here for and why they’re working for the Umbriel Corporation. Yes, this facility could be hiding some residents who might, in fact, be evil…
Oh for heaven’s sake. I mean, we knew Shizuku was going to make it, but it can’t help but feel like a dead waste of that crazy good cliffhanger from last time that it gets resolved almost immediately and replaced with an infodump on serums versus vaccines.
Thus, what ends up as a reasonably good volume is really overshadowed by what could have been amazing instead. And that it happens amidst a parody of Biohazard/Resident Evil? Sigh.
The series does action fine. The action here is fine. However, if you have any familiarity with the source material you’re likely wondering why you’re reading this and not playing the game instead. I say parody, but it’s more of a homage and not a terribly interesting one at that.
When it devolves into an Airsoft riff of all things it honestly gets better. This actually gives Bea something to do for a change, provides yet another excuse for Kenichirou to be rendered naked, and re-establishes that Takeru is a crack shot provided he’s aiming at the wrong thing.
More importantly, it explains Izuna’s tendency to put everything ahead of her own needs and, as predicted, she learns how to think of herself for a change due to Akira’s own actions to preserve somebody else’s dream.
That Izuna’s dream turns out to be nigh unattainable and very short-sighted is, in fact, probably the point and I do like that it helps to carry the day and reveals a much more… intense… side of her. You could guess that it was coming, but it’s quite the change.
It is, honestly, pretty good stuff with some strong action. There’s a decent amount of pathos to Izuna’s story as well - she took to keeping herself bottled up and never even stopped to wonder if that was what people really wanted from her.
If you like the series, this will not let you down. I do like it, but it does let me down a little, as I really think the Shizuku plot getting dropped was lame and an homage needs to do something other than just be a reference.
3.5 stars - go up if you aren’t fussed by that stuff that bugged me; I freely admit that things get stuck in my craw sometimes. Otherwise it continues to be a reasonably decent shonen romp, which is high praise from me.
I was a little disappointed that the big cliffhanger from last volume was resolved too quickly -- "Super easy, barely an inconvenience!" -- and the romantic development being teased seems to be tabled for now.
But hey, I liked the new story arc for its crazy video game action and allusions to James Cameron's Aliens. It's over-the-top cheesy as the group basically plays a variation of paintball called airsoft against some special zombies, but it really allows new character Izuna Tokage to tell her sad backstory and find her place in the group in a way that keeps the energy and action high. I'm curious to see if she'll be sticking around or is just another ally they set aside to revisit later . . . assuming she survives the cliffhanger, of course.
We'll find out tomorrow when I read the next volume.

Because this series LOVES to poke fun at other zombie media, this time they tackle a certain RESIDENT that is EVIL. ... I mean, Umbriel Corporation is just a couple letters off from Umbrella Corporation ya?
What's interesting is that the living Macguffin girl goes through MASSIVE character growth in this one, having been introduced last volume as inhuman as a briefcase that has a massive golden glow on the inside. So not only does her magic blood fight the zombie virus, her l33t skills with FPS games saves the crew since they have no coordination when it comes to shootin' undead, abominable, mutated herps.
I’m so glad that I enjoyed this volume as much as I did. Fingers crossed that my ratings going forward either stay here or increase. Also, I really want to play paintball now or call of duty zombies.
And yet again, I am now caught up to the current issue of this manga, and now I have to wait for the release of volume 14.
I've really grown to love this story and the characters. My husband and I just started watching the anime, and it's as good as we hoped it would be. I love when I read a series and then get to see the characters come to life in the anime. The art in the anime is so well done for this series. Before the apocalypse occurs, when Akira is basically a zombie at his job, most of the first episode is practically in black and white. There is very little color until the apocalypse happens, and then it's like the color comes back into Akira's world. One little detail that is especially delightful is that the blood from the zombies looks like a bright rainbow of paint splatter. It's just a cheeky little thing that really adds to the carefree attitude of the characters.
The story has really come a long way from volume 1, and now our group has hope that there could one day be a vaccine. However, once they find the pharmaceutical company that is supposedly working on putting an end to the virus, a new revelation (and a new threat to fight) enters the story. I cannot wait for volume 14.
Speaking of Resident Evil, I just saw that Paul WS Anderson, director and sometimes writer of most of those, is making a movie based on a George RR Martin story.
I kind of can't believe PWSA is allowed to make movies. I mean, I'm an Event Horizon stan, it's kind of terrible and kind of great, and when you see it in a theater at age 14 or so, which is before you're ready for it, it's awesome.
But those Resident Evil movies? I dunno...
He also made a mostly-forgotten Kurt Russell movie called Soldier, which I JUST bought at a thrift store THIS WEEK. And I'm piss scared to watch it because it has ABYSMAL ratings online.
I kind of loved this when it came out as well (age 15).
Maybe Paul WS Anderson makes movies that teenage boys like. From most people, that would sound like a slam. But, hey, why not? Teenage boys watch movies, right? I sure as hell did.
Okay, maybe teenage boys aren't the most discerning audience, but you know what a teenage boy can do? Get out of a sedan without hurting himself, just in the act of standing from a low, seated position. That's not a boast I can make. So, you know, we all have our uses.
Emergency zombie bite treatment, military helicopters, and mutant frog monsters.
So firstly, yeah, Shizuka got bit by a zombie, but it's highly unlikely that the author would kill off the lead female character. But that doesn't mean any of the feelings get resolved because Akira is still too much of a dumb-dumb silly-pants to admit his feelings to her face. But we do finally have time to take a breather and update our bucket list! adding on Takemina's additions (and a couple more).
But then the helicopters crash the party to do secret mutant lab things and everything escalates from there.
Really liked the backstory on Kencho, I thought his little side story was incredibly tender, and made me appreciate him more. We also got a new crew member, and she's pretty fucking cool, so that's a plus.
The overall story is seeming to ramp up amidst the shenanigans of our crew.
The manga stumped a bit for a few volumes, but still, I'm quite enjoying my time reading this. It's not the next best manga or anything, but it has enough uniqueness and charm to keep me engage. Good writing, fantastic art, and just an overall fun time.
Great follow up to the previous volume. Izuna is a fascinating character with a very interesting and tragic backstory, and her whole character change was very fun and satisfying to see.
One relatively small thing I didn’t like about this volume was that they sort of abandoned the development of Akira and Shizuka’s romance, although to be fair it’s definitely temporary and it’ll pick up again soon I’m sure.
Two delightful fun volumes in this kick-ass series with tons of fantastic moments, some scary, some hilarious.
😍 I loved that we immediately go from what happened in the last volume (Shizuka bitten) to finding a cure for her. I have to say at times it was a bit too technical (reading this in German), but I loved that they thought of ways to cure her. Plus, I did think it was a bit too easily solved, but on the other hand I am glad that the manga didn’t go fully dark. This one does so well with mixing silliness with seriousness. 😍 In these two volumes we also have a heavy spotlight on Izuna, the girl who is immune! We see how Akira is trying to get her to be more involved and also wants her to find happiness. We get a backstory on her and why she is like she is. She hasn’t had the easiest life after her dad died, and we see how it has affected her and how that even let to her being disappointed that she was immune. Because that meant the days would still keep on going. I was delighted to see her figure things out and find something she loves. She really kicked ass when things got scary (and maybe a bit silly, haha). 😍 I was at first worried when we got to see that helicopter because again, I didn’t want this manga to go too dark, but for now I guess I shouldn’t have worried. What we got next was Monster Hunter Deluxe Zombie edition and I loved it. Though I am curious on if we will see this company again and what they will do next.Zombie 100 – Bucket List of the Dead 14 by Haro Aso, Koutarou Takata 😍 The covers are once again so fabulous! 😍 Seeing Kenchou and Izuna go on a trip together which led to some dramatic moments when Kenchou got home, I am glad that Izuna was there with him to assure him, a backstory which I loved as it gave more insight in Kenchou (and I really liked his grandpa), and then more zombies and also a visit to a grave with a surprise present there. 😍 Tsuru was such a great character and I love how dedicated he is to the cause. A lot of people could have given up, but he is dedicated and wants to help out. 😍 Seeing them get so far with the serum/vaccine and I hope that nothing happens because I would love to see someone create something that works against the zombies and make things safer and better. 😍 The art is still fantastic. I love how it can go from fully detailed and serious to more silly in a heartbeat. 😍 Akira x Shizuka. We all know what Akira said, and it seems that Shizuka has forgotten for a bit, but I love that Akira didn’t back down. He is proud of what he has said and I hope that Shizuka will remember! 😍 Going back on a road trip through Japan! I just loved seeing them meet new people and new places. 😍 The items on the bucketlist and see new ones being added and some being crossed off (some even double as someone else already it). I am excited that they still have so many great plans and I hope that they are able to fulfil a lot if not all of them.
All in all, fabulous two volumes with plenty of action, humour, silliness, seriousness, monsters, kick-ass scenes, and more! I cannot wait to read more of this series as the volumes come out~
Amo tanto a Izuna...
This one was cute, though I do find myself wondering if this manga is still trying to build up toward anything in particular. I understand that it’s supposed to be episodic in nature, but previous installments made those episodes feel like a byproduct of the protagonist’s goals. This just makes me feel like all of the solutions are going to fall into the characters’ laps and it’ll rob the story of a satisfying conclusion. I still like the messaging and the art. I just hope the zombie outbreak doesn’t lose its biting force.
I always have fun with this crew when they get into truly outlandish situations. This was a fun volume as we get to see them take on the Umbriel Corporations mutant zombie frog monsters with the help of Izuna, who dreams of being a pro gamer. Got some good chuckles in with this volume and appreciated the lack of sexy moments. The main theme here seemed to be taking time to prioritize yourself and embrace what you want to do.
