No very happy reading this book. I don’t think this was researched very well and needed a editor. Why not use the name of the killer that everyone knows?

I am one of thousands of True Crime fans who enjoy the Sugar Coated Murder podcast (think Southern Cooking Show meets Dateline) because of the unique and tasty twists that two feisty and fun sisters, Anne Varner and Karen DeVanie, put on the stories they tell. In their debut book - CLICK CLICK CLICK - they reveal their early exposures to murder in small-town Virginia (which was a surprisingly large amount for such a small place) and vividly bring to life an especially troubling murder that hit very close to home for them. Seasoned and engaging storytellers, in this book they ask the question, “How does a well-rounded, affluent teenager transition from a country club tennis hot-shot and local high school basketball star into a diabolical schemer, contemplating the unthinkable act of taking someone’s life?” In answering this question, they pull the reader into a very well-written, fast-paced journey through a story with comfortable parts that most people can relate to, and shocking parts that very few people can - just the right recipe (pun intended) for a perfect unputdownable book! This appears to be (fingers crossed) the first in a series they are calling the Say My Name Series. I can’t wait to read more stories written by these two powerhouses!

Disappointed

Being born and bred in Franklin, I was so excited to read this book. I remember the disappearance of Trent Whitley and finally, the confession, then the discovery of his body. While I understand and support the authors’ attempt to remind readers who Trent Whitley was and to tell his story, I was often distracted by poor spelling and punctuation. Where was the editor?
Secondly, I am so disappointed in the authors’ podcasts. While I only listened to the one about A. j. Hadsell; I don’t think drinking, laughing, making goofy jokes, and cooking while discussing someone’s murder is appropriate at any time.

Click Click Click is a fascinating true crime story that delves into the real-life events that occurred in Franklin, VA, during the 1990s. Co-authored by sisters Anne Varner and Karen DeVanie, who also host the Sugar Coated Murder podcast, this book is a gripping account of the murder of Trent Whitley, a high school student who went missing one Friday night. Despite having no leads and no suspects, the case remained unsolved for several years until the police finally made an arrest and brought the culprits to justice.

The authors' extensive research and investigation into the case, as well as their firsthand experience of covering it in their podcast, have resulted in a riveting and immersive narrative. The reader is drawn into the story from the very beginning, as the authors provide a detailed and vivid portrayal of the town, the victims, and the perpetrators.

The book is structured in an engaging and informative manner, with each chapter providing a new layer of insight into the crime and its aftermath. In addition, the authors' writing style is compelling, with their prose keeping readers hooked until the very last page.

Click Click Click is an excellent choice for anyone who is a fan of true crime literature or podcasts. It offers a concise yet captivating account of a heinous crime that shocked a community and made national headlines. This book is a quick and absorbing read that can be finished in one sitting. This is a must-read for true crime enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys a well-written and gripping story.

Overall, it was a great read! It was eye-opening to read about a murder that happened in a neighboring small town next to where I'm from. The authors did a great job with details from the case. May Trent rest in peace and condolences to his family and friends.

This book kept my attention because the crime happened in my hometown, involving families I know. The spelling errors and poor grammar made me itch 😂 I also thought it was disgusting how they make Mike Jervey seem like some sort of hero.

In the legacy of Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, Varner and DeVanie have captured the twisted story of Mike Jervey, and the essence of the small town Franklin, Virginia crime...killing a teenager. The Sugar Coated Podcast sisters take you to back to the 1990s world of Friday Night Lights, Dairy Queens and police cover ups to deliver a rollercoaster of a tale that will give you goosebumps and make you stay up all night reading about a crime that hits close to their home and hearts

From heartfelt, altruistic motivation comes this new book, set in that authors’ hometown, Franklin, Virginia, when high school student, Raymond Trent Whitley went missing in 1990.

Moving at a breath-taking pace, packed with personal anecdotes and humor, you get a sense of what it was to be Trent, growing up in Franklin, an enclave of 8,000 people. Authors, Anne Varner and Karen DeVanie, also neatly bring you into the mind of a killer, bend on launching his criminal career, even as he strives for normalcy in the aftermath. The killer’s evolution is meticulously detailed as the blueprint of murder is formulated, and finally enacted. The story moves to the anguish of the Whitley’s, the gaping hole in their family dynamic as they wait years to find out what happened to their precious son, as the investigation unfolds.

Hosts of the Sugar-Coated murder podcast, Anne and Karen, deftly and responsibly navigate the many emotions tethered to any case with a missing child, and they do so brilliantly. These ladies also grant us a rare insight into the psychological ramifications of committing a murder, as the killer devolves into a shadow of his former self, haunted, and paranoid for good reason. These ladies have robustly achieved their goal of remembering Trent as a person, putting him at the center of the story in this tribute to his life, and the struggle for answers to tragically painful questions.

Click, Click, Click is the first in the ‘Say My Name Series’, an auspicious undertaking by the authors, and amazing first! Jill, host of the Murder Shelf Book Club podcast, highly recommend it to anyone who believes in justice and has a hankering for all things true crime.

This book kept me reading until I was done. The parts told by one of the perpetrators was chilling. I will never understand what drives someone to murder.
