Another thrilling installment in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series.
Lisa Phillips is a USA Today and top ten Publishers Weekly bestselling author of over 80 books that span Harlequin’s Love Inspired Suspense line, independently published series romantic suspense, and thriller novels. She’s discovered a penchant for high-stakes stories of mayhem and disaster where you can find made-for-each-other love that always ends in happily ever after.
Lisa is a British ex-pat who grew up an hour outside of London and attended Calvary Chapel Bible College, where she met her husband. He’s from California, but nobody’s perfect. It wasn’t until her Bible College graduation that she figured out she was a writer (someone told her). Lisa is a worship leader, tea aficionado, and dog lover of two crazy Airedales.
Ahhh where do I even begin??? I had high expectations for this book, and it exceeded my expectations. Laura Conaway is an extremely gifted author. She somehow managed to mix romance, mystery, suspense, and faith all in one novel. This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time, and there were a few times that I audibly gasped 😂. I also loved the EMT theme, and the fact that one of the main characters was a counselor. Once again, I’ve found another 5 star book!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Expired Vows is the fourth installment in this series. What an epic suspense story this was. Trace Bently, a former police officer now paramedic for Last Chance County, is shocked to see his late wife's best friend Kelsey Scott at a hostage situation. A family counselor who is working on securing a grant, Kelsey is called in as one of the persons involved in the hostage situation is one of her clients. She is surprised to see Trace at the hostage situation. Both characters have obstacles they have to deal with. Trace can't let go of his past because his wife passed away 5 years ago and has a hard time letting God be in control. Kelsey has health issues but doesn't want to put her burdens on other people. Can they risk their hearts and open up to love? When someone starts targeting Kelsey, Trace starts protecting her. Is it one of her clients or someone who wants the grant instead of her? Laura Conaway crafted an amazing romantic suspense novel filled with twists and turns, danger, surprises, and an incredible ending. This story will keep you not only turning the pages but will also keep you guessing who is behind everything and why. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have really enjoyed this Last Chance Fire and Rescue series! If you have read the first three books in the series, you will enjoy seeing characters that you have gotten to know show up in this novel. However, you could jump right in and enjoy Trace and Kelsey’s story even if you haven’t read the other books. You will notice some references to prior events and couples, yet their story is enjoyable in its own right, too.
Expired Vows was packed with emotion, and danger seemed to haunt the Kelsey all through the pages. There were some great twists and turns in the story, too. I really felt for all of the things that Trace and Kelsey had endured in the past, and also what they were going through during the book.
I enjoyed seeing these two be drawn to each other, yet they really fought the attraction, too. Kelsey had health issues and was afraid that her fragile health would be a burden to Trace. And Trace was still dealing with a lot of guilt and grief from his wife’s death years earlier. I loved seeing them finally realize that it was ok to love each other. And not only just ok, but that it could be a beautiful new beginning for them.
I hope there will be more stories to come. There are some characters who have been introduced in this series whom I would like to learn their back stories and also see them find love.
(4.5 stars)
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
What a great book to end the series is Expired Vows. Laura Conaway and Lisa Phillips did not disappoint.
Kelsey and Trace's story was action packed and with some great twists and turns. I loved also how Trace and Kelsey both had issues to work through and leave in God's hands.
But the ending, I absolutely did not see that coming! I really loved the epilogue and how it wrapped up all the stories.
I received this ARC free from the author(s), and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
I'm so excited for the final book in this Fire and Rescue series. We have plans for several more to come!! But for now - if you've been waiting for it to be complete, this is the last book. What an adventure it's been crafting these stories and intertwining them with the Last Chance/Benson First Responders world.
The minute I read Laura's idea for this book, I knew it would be a great story. Here's what Laura had to say about Expired Vows: The characters surprised me many times and I often found what they were learning along the way, I was too. This story was birthed from this what-if question: What if a grieving widower moved to escape his past and start over but his past came back to haunt him when he discovered his late wife's best friend was in town. And that's where Trace was created. Then put Kelsey into the picture, a family counselor who wants to help others heal but can't seem to find it for herself. When she becomes the center of dangerous attacks, it's clear someone thinks she is not competent and should be silenced. She took all the hallmarks of a Lisa Phillips story and brought her heart and a deep faith into this book. The rich emotions will draw you into the world, and Trace and Kelsey's love for each other will have to prove itself if they're going to survive all the Last Chance County danger! I hope you enjoy reading this fantastic book--and many more Laura Conaway novels to come. You can get the book on the Sunrise store in various formats https://sunrisepublishing.com/books-l... And it's coming soon to Kindle Unlimited :-) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJBBV499
Wow, the Last Chance Fire And Rescue series has done it again! New-to-me author Laura Conaway and familiar favorite Lisa Phillips kept me entertained, intrigued, and certainly guessing from start to finish in Expired Vows. I had my suspicions as to who the attacker might be, but then something would come up and I would second guess myself, and at the end I was still in for a few unexpected surprises.
As with the other Last Chance Fire And Rescue books that I have read I was once again impressed by the cooperation between the original creator of the characters, Lisa Phillips, and in Expired Vows, new author Laura Conaway. The creative combination was seamless and successful as far as I'm concerned as a reader. The continuity between the different co-authors in this series is also pretty good and I've been impressed so far.
At any rate, Expired Vows was a great romantic suspense read. It had plenty of of the mystery, danger, and romantic tension that I've come to expect from Lisa Phillips and in the Last Chance Fire And Rescue series. Laura Conaway's addition to the series was enjoyable to read and I had fun trying to puzzle out the who and the why behind it all. Plus you just couldn't help but root for the Kelsey and Trace to step out of the shadows of grief and fear and finally see the person standing there right in front of them. Needless to say I am hoping there will be more books in the series to come in the future...
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
It's been almost two months since Expired Vows released! Did you know there are three other books in the series? Expired Return by Lisa Phillips, Expired Hope by Megan Besing, and Expired Promise by Emilie Haney! Now's your chance to snag the whole series for the holidays and binge these suspense filled stories!
What an impressive showing for a debut author! Laura does a remarkable job keeping the romance, thriller, and mystery threads of her plot together without tangling them. She kept me guessing throughout the plot and I finished this book in just a few days, I was so desperate to know what would happen!
I don't frequently (or ever, really) read inspirational fiction but "Expired Vows" just might convince me to give the genre a chance. Conaway keeps enough information flowing to keep you guessing but there were so many surprises, twists and turns! Laura's tagline of "Triumph through Tragedy" is clearly on display as her characters learn to work through personal disaster and decide if they'll rely on one another and on God or not.
If you're looking for hair-raising plot and likeable characters with a plot that'll keep you guessing, I'd recommend "Expired Vows" to you. If you're looking for something sleepy and slow-paced, this book is probably not for you (haha).
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. Thanks to Sunrise for the ARC!
Expired Vows, the last book in Lisa Phillips' Last Chance Fire and Rescue series (book 4), is a wild ride of a book! Written by author Laura Conaway, the book tells the story of Kelsey Scott, counselor, and Trace Bently, EMT. Their paths cross--after many years--when Kelsey is trying to help talk down one of her patients who's holding his children hostage. Trace, a former cop, cannot believe that someone okayed a counselor to go into a dangerous domestic violence situation.
Kelsey had been the best friend of Trace's wife Renee, who died in an accident several years before. And now the two friends' lives are connected again, as Kelsey is being stalked by someone who definitely means her serious harm. They only have one clue; a vehicle. But who is behind the wheel; and why is Kelsey in their crosshairs?
Can Kelsey and Trace work through their own pain and losses to understand that there could be a future ahead for the two of them...if they can find and halt the stalker? Don't miss this fantastic thriller. Great characters and great addition to Last Chance!
I received a copy of this book from the author. All opinions and thoughts are my own honest ones.
Expired Vows is a must read for romantic suspense fans. It's the perfect combination of heart-stopping suspense mixed with all the feels! This is Laura Conaway's debut novel writing in Lisa Phillip's Last Chance County story world.
Trace Bently is paramedic with a ton of emotional baggage after his wife died. He can't let her or the investigation go. But he never expected to run into Kelsey Scott. She was his wife's best friend, and painful buried memories come flooding back. But someone wants Kelsey dead. The truth begins to emerge about his wife's death, bringing Tracy and Kelsey closer together.
This is one of those stories that lingers with you long after you put the book down. I loved the depth of the characters and the chemistry between Trace and Kelsey. Their history is intertwined and they find healing together.
I can't wait to read more from Laura Conaway! This was a fantastic addition to Last Chance County and I want to read more from her.
Whew! This book was a whirlwind, and I loved every minute of it. I found myself swept up into the mystery. The storyline is so easy to follow and still unpredictable. Kelsey and Trace’s past made the story even more compelling, bringing yet another layer of tension into the book. One of my favorite “scary quotes” of the book was, “If it wasn’t an accident, that meant she’d angered someone. And if that were true, it meant her goal of helping people had backfired. Nerves coiled in her gut at the thought. She might have made her first enemy.” That paragraph reeled me in even more, and I was turning pages long after midnight. (It was definitely worth it) I absolutely recommend Expired Vows to any suspense reader. It is clean, engaging, contains a fantastic balance of both suspense and romance. I appreciate both the author and publisher providing me a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Expired Vows by Lisa Phillips & Laura Conaway Book 4 in the Last Chance County series Rating: 4/5
Such an emotional rollercoaster of a story that pulls at your heartstrings and warms your heart. I have enjoyed this new series from Sunrise and was really impressed with the depth of emotions and mental anguish the authors could portray and portray well in this story. I loved how authentic the main characters were as they journeyed from brokenness to wholeness with Christ at the center. Faith is woven beautifully throughout the story and I appreciated all the thought processes that we all go through deciding our worth. Heartfelt and not to be missed.
Highly recommend this exciting story that will keep you on your toes and will have you rooting for the main characters!
My thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.
Expired Vows is the fourth book in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series. I have only personally read one of the previous books in the series so far, and I found I was still able to understand and enjoy this just the same.
My goodness, this was an intense book... and that starts right at the beginning. I must admit that when I first started reading, I wasn't sure about this one... while it drew me in right away, it touched on some topics that I wasn't sure would be good for my mental health. Still, I was intrigued by the story, so while I DID step away a few times... I am so glad I came back to it. This story was so wonderfully written. Even with the tough topics that it deals with, there is also a very beautiful message of healing and of faith. And of course, a beautiful love story too! It was the perfect blend of all of these elements to keep me on the edge of my seat and wondering what would happen next throughout... but leave me walking away with hope too.
If you enjoy romantic suspense, this is absolutely one not to miss!
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All opinions are my own.
I have read some of the other books in this series, but not all of them. I appreciated that, as a reader, I didn't feel like I was lost in the story, having missed some of the other books. While I know there was more to some of the other characters, since they had starred in other stories, I didn't feel like it took away from my enjoyment of this one to not know all of those stories. I enjoyed the characters in this book! Trace walked away from being a police officer, since he feels like it cost him his young wife. When Kelsey stumbles into his life again, things take a crazy turn as they work together to find out who her stalker is. I like that there was some twists and turns to the story! This is a wonderful mystery with a great message of hope and healing. I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
Last Chance County’s most recent generation is sadly coming to an end with Expired Vows from Lisa Phillips and Laura Conaway. Trace and Kelsey’s story is priceless. They have to fight for it, but they get their second chance with God and each other.
I received a complimentary copy of Expired Vows from the authors. Opinions are my own.
I have no fingernails left. This one was quite the rollercoaster ride due to the emotional aspects of the plot as well as the action and suspense. Whew! EMT Trace Bentley has not been the same man since he lost his wife. It affected him so much so that he changed careers from being a police officer to being an EMT. He felt he was being called to his new career. When they receive a call to a home with a hostage situation, he and their entire team of Last Chance Fire and Rescue are always ready for anything. What Trace was not ready for was the family counselor they called to the scene to serve as the negotiator. Kelsey Scott is a blast from his past. She was a close friend to his wife. He is not a happy man when they send her into the line of fire. She is a gifted counselor who truly cares about her patients and wants to help them heal. This story will bring them together in a way they never dreamed possible. Both Trace and Kelsey have battle scars - some are visible and others are invisible. These scars are personal to them, and whether they realize it or not, they have made them into who they are today.
The mystery and suspense in this book was great for adrenaline junkies who love a brisk, unrelenting pace in a book. There are buried secrets in this plotline that you will never see coming. The characters are authentic and their emotions are on raw display at times as they both try to heal physically and mentally. It is always fun to catch up with characters from the previous books. Last Chance County is special place to live. It seems like a place where people come to heal and renew their faith. I think Kelsey is one of my favorite characters in this series. There are plenty of great characters, but something about her emotional state pulled on my heart. Even when she was emotionally distraught about her personal life, she still wanted to help others. This one had no problems earning five stars in my book.
My favorite quote - "When you give up on people, you leave them broken and alone."
Thank you to Sunrise Publishing for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Disclaimer: I received a copy from the publisher. This in no way affects my review. All thoughts are my own.
Expired Vows, written by Laura Conaway, ran full-throttle and was action-packed from the very first scene to almost the last page! Trace Bentley, an EMT in town, and Kelsey Scott, a new Family Counselor, were friends in their college years together and she was his dead wife’s best friend. As the opening chapter begins, the two of them run into one another at a domestic disturbance within one of her clients’ homes. As Kelsey prepares to help the Police of Last Chance County, the past with Trace and Renee re-visits her. The painful memories come rushing back to the devastation and loss she still feels every single day, and she shoves them aside. Once Trace and Kelsey begin to reconnect, and their friendship reforms, danger then rears its ugly head. The accidents and other incidents that begin to target Kelsey could potentially terminate her life. Clues begin to pop up, one in the form of poisoning the wrong delivery food item, that could begin to unravel the case. Friends and colleagues rally around Kelsey to keep her safe and out of the path of danger. Yet, mysteriously, danger comes knocking anyway. This book had me wrapped completely up in each scene and I could not put it down and walk away easily. Conaway’s writing reached out to my heart and my soul, as Trace and Kelsey tried to put the pain of the past aside while getting to know one another once again. As their work called for their total concentration and ability function at their jobs, they both learned new ways to rely on the One who would always sustain them. As I neared the conclusion of the book, it became evident that real love comes in many forms and that the truth can always set you free. Love doesn’t have to be forced to be real, because real love is a gift given from God above. I was given this book for free by Author Laura Conaway in exchange for my honest opinion of her work. Expired Vows was a suspenseful, exciting, and emotionally tugging book. I honestly give Expired Vows 5 out of 5 stars as this book touched my heart and catered to my need for suspense! I strongly recommend this book and I am grateful for the opportunity to read it.
This story is something special. It’s an action-packed suspense with all of the hallmarks of a sweet love story, but it’s so much more than that.
Laura Conaway makes Trace and Kelsey come alive on the page. Sure, we may not have faced their exact struggles, but more than likely we know someone in our lives who has suffered the loss of a spouse or loved one or dealt with a major trauma in their own lives. Some may have even struggled with how to move past that point and that’s where Conaway’s depiction of their stories came across as so realistic. However, the author doesn’t leave us in that place. She shows those who may be struggling there is a way to leave the past behind and move forward in a beautiful story.
I loved that there was also a history between Trace and Kelsey. Their story premise isn’t something that I’ve encountered in the romantic suspense genre. Maybe I just haven’t read enough, but I liked that it felt unique.
I also loved the characters themselves. Trace’s ability to see marriage as a beautiful gift even after the loss of his wife and Kelsey’s determination to help others who were hurting and see the good in people when others couldn’t really struck a chord with me. For me, evidence of the author’s faith was visible in the way that she told their stories, but it was such a natural extension of her that came out in the writing.
Conaway’s story comes alive in Lisa Phillips’ universe in a seamless way. If you didn’t know better, you’d think that she helped to create the Last Chance universe. So, this book has wonderful characters, a great story, lots of action, and, of course, a sweet happily ever after… everything a girl could want in a book.
The publisher did send me this book for review consideration but all opinions are my own. I did not promise to write a positive review in return for the copy of the book, nor would I ever make such a commitment.
Action. Romance. Swoony moments. Faith. Real life issues. Mental illness. Hope. This book has it all! Gosh I have been enjoying this series so much and I’m hoping that Sunrise decides they want to do some more books. Hint, hint, wink, wink.
First of all I need to praise the inclusion of mental illness in this story, and what Kelsey’s perspective as a counselor brought to this situation. I think quite often we have reactions mirroring Trace’s when we are judging circumstances (hence the reason we shouldn’t judge), but we don’t stop and think about what the person doing harm is going through. I’ll admit, I’m one of those quick to judge kind of people. But this book, well Kelsey in particular, really opened my eyes. And this was just in the first few chapters guys! It’s been awhile since I’ve had a book really have an impact on me so early on in the story – usually it’s towards the end. Bravo.
And the rest of the book? Well it was just so good. The dialogue was blended perfectly with the rest, the action was just right, the pacing was spot on. Everything about it was good, until the end – and that’s just because I wasn’t ready to part with the characters yet. Trace? Yeah, he’s a swoony character alright. I really enjoyed seeing him and Kelsey come together. I mean, it’s hard when there’s a history, especially when that history includes a deceased wife/best friend. But honestly, it was beautifully written, and realistic. It wasn’t like oh my wife is dead and so now I run into her best friend and bam I’m in love lol. No, it was tactful, and a reminder that love after loss is ok.
All in all, I think contemporary romance fans who enjoy fast paced, action stories will really enjoy this story. I sure did, and I’m ready for more!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own
I loved this book! I mean, in all actuality, I have loved this entire series. And the other series that featured characters from Last Chance County as well. They’re all so good! I can’t choose a favorite so don’t ask me.
In this book, we get to take a closer look at Trace. He’s an EMT paired with Andi(you would have met her in the previous book). And he’s got his own hidden past that he doesn’t want to share with anyone. It’s too painful. Part of it is that he was in law enforcement and that pops up occasionally when he offers unsolicited advice to the local law.
Our other main character is Kelsey. She’s got her own past and issues. None of which she wants to share because she only wants her strengths revealed as she hopes to have her program at the trauma center continue. One of her issues is that she is a diabetic and has a prosthetic limb from an issue with that.
And then the kicker. Kelsey and Trace know each other. Kelsey knows most of his past and he knows most of hers. They each have somethings to learn about the other. But once they meet up and realize that they’re living in the same area things start happening.
Can Trace protect Kelsey? Can they figure out who is targeting her? And will they stop him or her before it’s too late?
Wonderful read! I hope you get the chance to read it and please come back so we can chat about it!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Thank you, Sunrise Publishing, for this ARC. I have loved each book in this Last Chance Fire and Rescue series on their own merits, and this one is no exception. Featuring the ever-delightful friends to lovers trope, this last installment renews a friendship between two wounded characters, each grieving the loss of the same woman. Renee, Kelsey, and Trace, met in college, and Kelsey had celebrated with Renee and Trace when these two dear friends fell in love and married. But Renee is gone now, and Kelsey must reckon with her own grief and her attraction to Trace as she tries to help him move on from the loss of his wife. Kelsey also has to reckon with her view of herself, a view grounded in worldly values, not Christian ones. Sharing a common struggle with many disabled or chronically ill persons (including this reviewer), Kelsey believes that her physical disability and her ongoing fight to manage her diabetes disqualifies her from romantic love. Who would want to care for someone with such challenges? The answer, of course, is God and those who trust in Him. We are all asked to care for each other in one way or another and to allow that care to be in various ways reciprocal. But if Kelsey opens her heart to Trace, will he open his to her? Like the other books set in Last Chance County, Expired Vows is full of suspense and plot twists as well as warm, clean, romantic moments. It's a joy to read more of the stories of the couples who featured in the first three books, watching their love stories progress as Trace and Kelsey work to find their way forward. Each of the characters in the series faces moments of challenge that force them to choose to hide behind a faulty self-image or to step out in faith. As always, that faith is richly rewarded, often in unexpected ways, as is the reader's trust in the Sunrise Publishing label. Read the Last Chance Fire and Rescue Series -- you won't be disappointed!
Expired Vows by Laura Conway is book #4 of the Last Chance Fire and Rescue Series. This is my first book of the Last Chance Fire and Rescue. I can't wait to read the previous 3. Trace Bentley has moved to Last Chance County to escape the painful death of his wife. He wanted to run from the past and start a new. He even switched careers from being a cop to an EMT. Now, he can save lives instead of watching on the sidelines. That is until he sees Kelsey Scott again. During a hostage situation, family counselor Kelsey Scott is called to help diffuse the situation. She's moved back to Last Chance temporarily for a grant proposal she is working on. She's also Trace's late wife's best friend. Next thing you know, Kelsey's life is endangered and Trace won't let the same thing that happened to his wife happen to her. He's afraid to love again and she's afraid to let anyone love her. As I said before this was my first Last Chance Fire and Rescue book. It won't be my last. I fell in love with this "family" of firefighters and EMTs. They really have each other's back through the whole book. I liked Last Chance County too. I often love the towns that I read about. This one is no exception. The town and the supporting characters were important to this book and it showed. Trace and Kelsey were two broken people who needed help and they needed God. I loved reading about their journey of healing. It was a beautiful story with bursts of excitement thrown in along with a great whodunit. It kept you guessing with all the twists and turns thrown in. It was definitely a page-turner. It also has a really great wonderful lovely epilogue. It was one of the best I've read before. You get an epilogue that deals with the previous 3 books plus the current one. I loved it! That said, you did not need to read the previous books to know what was happening. It could be read as a standalone, but I don't think you'd want to do that. I know it's pulled me into wanting to read those 3 previous books and I'm pretty sure there is a next book. I'm hoping and praying for a book #5. I'll definitely be having that baby on pre-order. I was given a copy of this book, but all opinions of my VERY OWN!
3.5 stars "We've got a male holding two kids at gunpoint . . . . "
"Trace Bently wasn't going to let anyone die on his watch-not today." When EMT Trace Bently and his partner arrive on the volatile scene, he finds that the situation has a unique twist. The perpetrator is recovering from a traumatic brain injury and experiences erratic mood swings, prompting the family's counselor to be called in as part of the team attempting to deescalate a very dangerous situation. Yet, "Kelsey"? . . . "What was his dead wife's best friend doing in Last Chance County?".
Seeing Trace again was a shock to Kelsey Scott's already-in-overdrive system. Years had passed, and they had both moved on since his wife's tragic accident, . . . wait . . . hadn't he been a police officer back then? One thing hadn't changed, Trace's protective nature, and she was managing just fine on her own, thank you very much . . . wasn't she? Once upon a time, they had been such good friends; one look at Trace and Kelsey knew that he could still use that friendship.
There were so many wonderful situational truths sprinkled throughout this story; faith and restoration permeate multiple conversations as Trace and Kelsey attempt to navigate an entirely new kind of relationship . . . . . while dragging a ton of personal baggage behind them. The strength of the book could also be considered somewhat of a weakness, the plot spun and stalled on occasion before moving forward towards a surprisingly sensational ending.
"God brought you into his life for a reason. Was it for you to fix him or to love him?"
The action begins right away as Trace Bently and Kelsey Scott meet again under a stressful family situation in which the departments of police and medical personnel are called to assist. As things escalate between the husband and his family, Kelsey must try to defuse the situation since this is one of her patients that she has been counseling. Both Kelsey and Trace are great in putting aside emotions and doing their jobs in order to protect people.
The interesting part of the story is that Kelsey and Trace have a years long friendship that ended abruptly when Trace’s wife and Kelsey’s best friend, Renee, is killed in a car accident. Now they are forced to confront the past and move forward. I was pleased to see their trust and relationship grow throughout the story. There is plenty of excitement as Kelsey and Trace race to figure out why she is the target of attacks.
I throughly enjoyed the series of the Last Chance Fire and Rescue with its courageous men and women. I am looking forward to what Lisa Phillips and her talented co-authors have in store for readers. If you enjoy authors Dee Henderson, Elizabeth Goddard, or Lynette Eason, this is a romantic suspense series to read.
I received a complimentary copy of the book through the publisher. I was under no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Expired Vows Last Chance Fire and Rescue #4 By Laura Conaway and Lisa Phillips
Trace Bentley thought moving to Last Chance was the answer, he could put the past with all its pain and failings behind him. And he was doing a fairly decent job of it too, until he was called on a call to a domestic disturbance. Suddenly his past walked it his life.
Kelsey Scott was called into hostage situation when one of her clients had an incident occur. But when the already too-tense situation goes off Kelsey's desired outcoming, her life goes even more off path. So now she finds herself dealing with her late BFF's husband and threats against her.
Expired Vows is the fourth book in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series, and it doesn't hold back at all bringing the reader into non-stop action. This book in no way lets the tone of the last story down. The story, settings, and characters keep it moving, which kept this reader's attention from page one. I highly recommend this book that could be read as a standalone if you haven't read the previous titles in the series. Perfect for the upcoming weekend! Rest, Relaxation, and Reading - three Rs to make for a perfect conclusion!
I was provided a complimentary copy with no expectations but to offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
This was one I struggled to put down. I devoured all of it within 24 hours. it was action-packed and most chapters left you needing to read on. I found myself strongly compelled to figure out the mystery as I invested in these characters! Trace and Kelsey are mature, likable characters with human struggles of shame, guilt, and insecurities. For Trace, the loss of his wife still haunts him and has made him feel like God is punishing him; for Kelsey, her inconsistent health makes her feel like a burden to everyone around her. The inner battles they face are very relatable.
This is a story about overcoming adversity, learning to do life in community, letting of the past, relinquishing control, and leaning on God's grace. Trace and Kelsey had the heart of God when it came to their professions; maybe even TOO much at times. But their character growth throughout the book showed that they began to understand God's sovereignty and goodness more and more as they fell in love and strove to save Kelsey's life.
Again, amazing job to Laura Conaway and Lisa Phillips on this novel. I'm looking forward to reading more from Sunrise Publishing and whatever Laura has in the works next.
Lisa Phillips is an author I regularly read. She wrote the first book in this series, and if I understand correctly, the other three books have been written by different authors with her input, since the books are set in a setting a lot of her books are set in, and using characters she created.
I enjoyed this book, and am sad the series is over. To be honest, if I didn't know that all 4 books were written by different authors, I would not have guessed that. This book and the writing style flowed in the same manner as the other three.
I am pretty sure that Kelsey was a new character in this book, but Trace was in at least some of the other books. I loved both main characters. Since I am diabetic, I found Kelsey more interesting than your average female character. I like it when an author incorporates a health issue or physical handicap into a story.
There was a lot of suspense and drama in the story, and I didn't figure out very early who the guilty party was. I started having suspicions at one point, but it wasn't much before it became obvious.
I am guessing the title of the book came about because of Trace losing his wife five years previous, and having a hard time moving on. He struggled a lot with his attraction to his dead wife's best friend, and that made the romance part of the story all the more interesting.
There have been a lot of books set in Last Chance County, and hopefully this is not the last. But if it is, this is a great book to end on.
I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes. All opinions in this review are my own.
Expired Vows is written by Laura Conaway & Lisa Phillips. This is book four in the Last Chance Fire and Rescue series. I have really enjoyed this series. The first responders of the Last Chance Fire and Rescue team have become friends in a sense. I have really enjoyed seeing their lives, their back stories and growth. This is EMT Trace Bently’s story. He previously was a police officer, but after the death of his wife, he gives up his career. He moves back to Last Chance County. His wife’s best friend, Kelsey Scott who is a family counselor finds herself a target in attacks. She is not sure why she is being targeted. Trace wants to protect her. This book is packed full of action and suspense. Is one of Kelsey’s clients responsible for the attacks? Why is she being attacked? Can Kelsey and Trace battle the demons that have been plaguing them I cannot believe this series is ending. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book, all thoughts are my own.
This next book in the Last Chance County series was excellent. I couldn’t put it down because the plot was very well written and the characters were very compelling and easy to sympathize with. The plot was explosive and didn’t let up until the very end. Though at times I did get a bit frustrated with Trace and Kelsey, I was hoping everything would work out for them in the end. I did guess who the perpetrator was before the reveal, but the twist was well done and made sense. It was nice to see most loose ends tied up by the end of the story. I really appreciated the focus on God and His love and faithfulness even through difficult and dangerous circumstances. I was personally encouraged and challenged through these revealed biblical truths. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys inspirational romantic suspense and I can’t wait to read the next one! I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book for the author and publisher. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
