Demons don’t hide under my bed—they crawl into it.
Selling my soul to save the life of my ingrate ex-boyfriend was the final nail in my coffin of bad decisions. It won me a painful death, a thankless job as an errand girl, and landed me in the Chasm—a violent and dangerous part of the afterlife.
And as if dying wasn’t bad enough, I now have the attention of the four Demon Lords who run the Chasm—Gorrin, the man who owns my soul, Tyrus, a brilliant and ruthless mobster, Yazmor, who lives as if everything is a joke, and Hale, an unpredictable and violent loner.
My unhappy little rut is shattered when I’m tasked with taking the soul of an innocent teenage girl. Finding another option will require facing my past and outsmarting the most powerful beings in existence. If I thought the Demon Lords were intimidating as lovers, that’s nothing compared to having them as enemies.
At least the afterlife isn’t boring…
Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of violence and death.
Jayce Carter lives in Southern California with her husband and two spawns. She originally wanted to take over the world but realized that would require wearing pants. This led her to choosing writing, a completely pants-free occupation. She has a fear of heights yet rock climbs for fun and enjoys making up excuses for not going out and socializing.
"A Devil of a Time" is the start of a new paranormal RH series, with a very different take on the concept of selling your soul to the devil. There is an interesting mix of worldbuilding, with part of the story taking place in the Chasm (or Hell, as Loch calls it herself) and another part on earth. It results in a young demon who doesn't want to do what's expected of her, holding tight to the goodness in her soul and ultimately ending up involved in a gang war with a man she never wanted to see again.
Loch is an interesting character; she's trying very hard to learn from her mistakes, but still struggling with the new life she's forced to build. I love the connections she has with the four demon overlords and I wouldn't be able to pick a favorite among these men. They are all vastly different, and quite amazing for very different reasons. I love the fact that there is rivalry between these men as well; I can feel so many possibilities for book two!
And if all of that wouldn't be enough to look forward to book two, the author also managed to deliver a serious cliffhanger at the end. I'm really hoping to get news about book two real quick!
Honestly I've become a huge fan of Jayce Carter's work, I mean her brain is something else, and this one is one of the most original stories I've ever read, it's a mix between mafia, fantasy, evil and good. The MFC is sassy, but a bit naïve for her own good, she keeps thinking men are not as dumb as she thinks and even when she sold her soul but her ex, she is even too trusting. Then there are the Demon Lords, four very different male characters, but each of them charming in his own way, from the boyish funny one to the grumpy one, we get a bit of all the types of bad boys. It ends in a soft cliffhanger, and I honestly can't wait for what's next for this bunch!
This book is a paranormal why choose series. It takes the concept of selling your soul to the devil to a new level. You get some world building between the Chasm (Hell) and earth. It is about young woman, who is a demon, who doesn’t want to conform to the Chasm’s world. She tries so hard to remain good in this world of cruel beings. She ultimately ends up in a gang war with the man who go her into this mess.
Loch is a strong FMC from the jump. She is not wonder woman if that is what you are thinking. She tries to learn from all her mistakes, but struggles with this new life in the Chasm. She has connections with several of the demon lords, including the one she sold her soul too. All the men are different, and they all (except for one) help her and ask nothing in return for their help. They help her navigate her new life.
This book was an interesting new concept of selling your soul. It also ends on a cliffhanger from the chasm itself (see what I did there). I am really looking forward to book 2.
This was weird. I’ve read Jayce Carters books before and I don’t remember them being this nonsensical. This was the first PNR book that i have read by her so maybe that had something to do with it?
The h is a demon and is given a task that she must complete while doing so she gets tortured and nearly dies, but like isn’t she already dead? They make a big deal about this but she had already died five years ago! A few chapters later when another H finds out about it she even says “I’m already dead”. There was just stuff like that throughout the whole book. Things that didn’t make sense and the author didn’t put any effort into making it make sense.
I love Jayce Carter's books, she has never let me down. This series is like nothing I've read of hers before but still has her signature all over it. I couldn't read it fast enough. The plot is full of depth. The main characters are full of well everything pain, pleasure, anxiety, power, knowledge the list goes on. I got to the end and could visualize the final scene feel the power in it. Don't short yourself by passing on this book. You will be missing the first of what has quickly become a new favorite series!
This is such a great start to a new series. I was completely hooked by this new world. Loch is stuck in the Chasm after selling her soul to save her useless ex. A demon in a world she refuses to adhere to. Four demon lords take her under their wings in different ways, although she refuses to trust them. Intriguing and original, I loved this one. Impossible to put down, and the ending caught me totally off guard.
This was such an intense read. Fighting to stay who your are and what you believe in when there so much evil and it would easier to just give in. This sassy fmc is amazing. And I like her tough men. Tho are they her men? And this ending. Punched me in the gut. I NEED the next book of this epicness. That was a killer ending. Such intensity, I cannot wait for more.
Jayce Carter managed to write a completely different take on hell, or the Chasm in this case, and how people who sell their souls spend the afterlife.
The FMC, Loch, has been in the Chasm for five years and still hasn't managed to properly find her place and does everything she can not to become a different person and to go against her beliefs to ensure her position in her new world. On the other hand there are four Demon Lords who try to get her to accept said place, especially the one who owns her soul.
Read this story to follow Loch and how she tries to navigate the path she feels best for herself.
This story is the first book in a reverse harem series. I would have liked a little more world building and some more insight into Loch's past other than some info hinting to her upbringing, that is the reason why I'm giving four instead of five stars. Also, the ending was very unexpected. I'm excited to learn more of Loch's way in future parts of this series!
Fantastic start to this series. Loch has traded her soul to a demon and is now living in the Chasm, her personal hell. Gorrin, Hale, Yaxmor and Tyrus are the four Demon Lords that rule the Chasm. She has wallowed the last five years trying to accept her fate. In an effort to get her to accept her new reality, Gorrin tries to force her to take a soul. She resists, plots against his wishes and things spiral out of control. This has the great character development that I expect from this author, it is a novel take on the demon realm and has the steam and plot necessary to keep me interested. Can't wait for the next in series!.

I really want to give this book way more than 5 stars i enjoyed reading it that much! Loch (FMC) has ended up The Chasm (a place where people go who sell their soul) so a type hell as such only there her only job is to get others to sigh their souls away too. That there is only thing that Loch is hard pressed not to do. Much to the annoyance of the Demon Lords - Gorrin (her souls owner), Tyrus, Hale and Yazmor (who was quirky in a stabby kind of way).
Loch is witty, funny, sarcastic and is constantly in trouble throughout this book. Its her banter and relationship with the 4 Demon Lords was what i loved most. That ending had my jaw dropping. I cant wait for the 2nd book
Loch gave her soul to save her scumbag boyfriend, but she’s resisted taking souls like other demons. She’s also resisting her attraction to the other demon lords, calculating Tyrus, bad-boy Hale, quirky Yazmor and the owner of her soul, Gorrin. So, when she’s forced to make a deal for a soul, she decides to try another way. I loved Loch - she’s flawed and feisty, vulnerable yet vicious when need be. This story has introduced me to a whole new world, and I’m excited to see what’s next.
This is a wonderful introduction to this new paranormal RH series, The Devil's Luck. I love the concept and how emotive the writing was. It really made you feel along with the characters. This has strong worldbuilding that left you wanting to know more. Loch is an amazing character, she is witty, sarcastic, funny and all together fun to read about. I really enjoyed her interactions and banter with her demon lords.
Something different indeed. Who knew what happened when you sold your soul? Jayce has a new take on it - the Chasm is where you go and learn to survive, or not. And what you looked like? Less said the better. Except our heroine only looked like a demon when she wanted and she didn't want until ..? Well the story tells all. Well plotted, nice style and a good start to a series.
The concept and the story are interesting but I feel it started slowly. It could just be me or the mood I was in when I opened the book, but it took me several attempts to engage. Once I did I was able to enjoy it.

This was an amazing book. The characters are incredible realistic and intense. The plot in wonderfully twisted. The world the the author has built is a wonder to behold. I became fully engaged. Oh my heart. Especially during the the high action or high emotion events. The ending was quite unexpected. Please give this a try.
I really enjoyed this read. The characters are interesting and I love the differences each of the Demon Lords has. The storyline was good and I really didn't see that ending coming. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Enjoyed this story a lot. loved how she stood up for herself n her morals even when pressured but could have done with. We all make choices for an ex we regret when we see them as they truly are. Her ultimate sacrifice was not of her morals, her moral compass stays good all the way through. A tearjerker warning for the end. You can really feel the remorse. He may have deserved it for pushing but feeeeeeeeck if it didn't hit the feels when she realises what had happened. Still leaking water from soggy eyes 10mins later thinking of this. (Could be how well she portrayed Lochs emotions or could be hormone induced 🤷♀️ who cares!)
