Nancy Warren is the USA Today bestselling author of more than 100 novels.
She’s known for writing funny, sexy and suspenseful tales. She’s an avid hiker, animal lover, wine drinker and chocolate fiend. Favorite moments in her career include being featured on the front page of the New York Times, being the answer to a crossword puzzle clue in Canada’s National Post newspaper and being a finalist three times in the Rita awards. Nancy Warren returns to her whimsical world of witches and cozy crimes in Highway to Hellebore, and fans of the genre are in for another magical treat. With charm, mischief, and a murder mystery at its heart, this entry in the Village Flower Shop series blends supernatural intrigue with small-town shenanigans—plus a dash of romance to keep things interesting.
The story kicks off with a warning: Beware of men in fast cars… When a flashy sports car blazes through the quiet streets of Willow Waters, florist and reluctant witch Peony Bellefleur immediately senses trouble. And she’s not wrong. Bad boy Dennis Ratslaff, who once stirred up plenty of scandal in the village, has returned after decades in Australia—now wealthier, bolder, and just as brash. His plan to tear up a historic garden to build a pool sparks outrage in the tight-knit Cotswolds community. But things take an even darker turn when his construction project uncovers more than just Roman ruins… and suddenly, Dennis has more to worry about than angry neighbors.
Warren’s signature wit and delightful characterizations shine as Peony is swept up in the mystery—while also navigating the surprising development of a potential romance with the town’s most eligible bachelor, who just so happens to be a secret werewolf. The blend of cozy mystery, light paranormal elements, and sweetly awkward dating scenes gives the book its signature charm.
While the plot does occasionally take scenic detours and some subplots could use a little more depth, the overall ride is as breezy and entertaining as ever. With no gore, no explicit content, and plenty of laughs, Highway to Hellebore is perfect for fans of light-hearted paranormal whodunits.
A lovely escape into a world where witches run flower shops, werewolves woo with charm, and justice is always served—with a touch of magic and a lot of tea.
This is the third book in the author’s A Village Flower Shop mystery series featuring witch Peony Bellefleur, who runs a flower shop in the small village of Willow Waters. The series is a cute, paranormal “light” series, with witches, werewolves, and a talking familiar parrot. While it’s not my favorite of the author’s cozy mystery series, I enjoyed the latest entry.
In this book a rich Australian is angering the village by racing his sports car through town, flashing his wealth (in a fairly wealthy town), and acting boorish at every turn. And, he’s a dog hater! As more of the man’s background is revealed, Peony learns he’s even more despicable than on first impression. And it turns out he was originally from Willow Waters, and none of the old-timers are happy to see he’s returned.
This should probably be called “mystery light” as well as “paranormal light.” It wasn’t until just over the halfway point that a murder happens! Before that it was all about the set-up, which was interesting, as well as about Peony’s developing relationship with Alex, the wealthy baron. She learned Alex’s major secret in a previous book and is trying to decide if she should tell him she’s a witch.
It was pretty obvious who was going to be murdered, but having it mixed in with the discovery of an ancient Roman burial site was interesting. While the victim was obvious, the killer wasn’t, as we had an abundance of possible suspects. It’s really the characters that made this book for me. In addition to the victims, we got to see more of Peony’s mother and her two borders, as well as the town’s new female vicar.
I quite enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading the next in the series.
Highway to Hellebore ARC This is the third book in a new exciting series by Nancy Warren. Highway to Hellebore was a book that ended up being intriguing to the end. The characters were riveting and the storyline was a fun read. Really enjoyable. Wish this place existed so I could visit .
For as short as it was, it took me way too long to get through this book. I know these are cozy mysteries and suspense isn't the biggest part of the book, but the mystery here didn't really hold my attention at all. The story overall is fine, not bad but not great either. The book is short, but it felt like there was a lot of repeated info as through the reader wouldn't recall what happened 25 pages prior and everything was very predictable.
The Village Flower Shop series is my least favorite of Warren's series I've read. I liked the characters in the other series more and was drawn into their continuing story. In this book, we're still seeing Peony and Alex's relationship crawl forward and Peony debating if she should tell Alex her secret. Does anyone not know how this will play out though? I think I'm done with this series.
Nancy Warren’s third installment of the Village Flower Shop series does not disappoint. Peony Bellefleur, local florist and shoppe owner in the lovely town of Willow Waters in Cotswolds is set for another adventure. A former resident of Willow Waters returns in a fancy red sports car and stirs up more than trouble. Dennis Ratsliff left Willow Waters years ago and left a bad taste in the mouths of many only to return from Australia and with a lot of money and ego.
The returning Dennis has bought a local historic property that is on the historical register and has his own plans for remodeling that includes ripping our an award-winning English country garden and wildflower meadow for a swimming pool. Town folk are not happy with his return nor his remodel plans and work to stop him from this disrespecting of local history.
There is a lover’s triangle of sorts and tempers flair and someone dies. A digger is driven thru a house and Peony goes on a romantic date at a lovely Italian restaurant with the most eligible bachelor in town, no not Dennis. She and Alex get dinner and a show and more.
Dead bodies, flowers, learning of wine appreciation and oh discovery of a Roman burial site?
Ms. Warren will have you guessing and circling back around in your mind to solve this mystery. I say it’s well worth the read and I truly enjoyed it. While this could be read as a stand alone book it would benefit to start from the beginning so that you have more of the back stories of the others and it’s more fun that way 😊
An interesting read. You have to love a small village...where facts are easily confused with gossip! This bad boy was worse than anyone could have imagined so there were a lot of suspects in his death! Great characters and an excellent mystery.

This is the third entry in the Village Flower Shop mysteries. I've yet to find a Nancy Warren paranormal cozy that I haven't devoured and wanted more. Highway to Hellebore is no exception Bad boy Dennis Ratslaff (great name) has triumphantly returned to Willow Waters in a snazzy sports car. Problem is, no one wants him back. Having burned his bridges as a young man, he hasn't improved with age and money, especially when he buys a Grade II old historic house with wonderful gardens. Dennis' plans are to tear everything up to 'modernize' it despite not having permission from the National Trust. Peony Bellefleur is only one of the villagers who wants to stop him. When the digger he hired digs up archaeological treasure, Dennis is forced to stop digging. But he has literally dug his own grave when he's discovered dead in the original hole. Much as Peony feels relief that the garden and house won't be ruined and with a possible Roman burial site, she still feels Dennis deserves justice. But with just about everyone in the village with a motive, it won't be easy to find out who had the last Laff on Dennis the Rat.
Florist and witch Peony Bellefleur is trying to rebuild her life after her husband's early death. She works to grow her business and renovate the historic Cotswold cottage she shares with her apprentice witch and her medium mother. She tries to keep her talents to herself but is thwarted by her mother's public visions and her own need to protect the vulnerable members of her community.
She has to intervene again when a former thug returns to his childhood home and flaunts his ill-gained wealth by buying a historic home and turning it into a monstrosity. His plans to bulldoze his home's famous gardens and replace them with a swimming pool. Many residents want him gone, and there are many suspects when he is murdered.
Peony also has to work out her growing relationship with Alex, a charming titled werewolf who is not aware of her powers. Peony, her friends and familiars are interesting characters and should continue to provide more adventures In future books. There are also charming horticultural scenes that bring a welcome hint of summer during a freezing winter.
💕 Positives: * The dinner party scene was nice yet interesting.
* Enjoyed seeing the werewolf again. A small appearance, but nice none the less.
* The murders were predictable but creative.
🚫 Negatives: * The appropriation comment was annoying. Anyone can own and appreciate something from another culture. He wasn't mocking it by any means.
* For a character that's supposed to be caring and kind, she's coming off as judgmental and holier than thou in this book.
* The mystery felt like it was being dragged out.
⚡Trigger Warning: None.
🌟 Overall, it took me a while to get through this book. It seems like in every one of Nancy Warren's series, she adds in a book that has political quips then reverts back to her usual style by the next book.
I wish that she would stop with the politics. I read to escape that, not to be submerged back into it again. If I wanted politics, I would read the news.
I might read the next one (since her writing pattern is usually no politics by the 4th book) but I'll wait until reviews come out regarding it.
Book 3 in the Village Flower Shop series brings more romance into Poeny's life and a bigger smile on my lips. I think this is turning into a new favorite series by Nancy Warren much quicker than the great Witches Baking Show. The motley crew of characters, each with their own distinct voice and bubbly personality, combined with the magic and mayhem atmosphere make this series a delight to follow and fall into. What I love the most about this series, compared to others by Nancy Warren, is the level of maturity Peony presents when it comes to magic: this is a seasoned witch, one that knows her craft and shares her knowledge. The introduction of new characters into this world never feels forced, it is fluid and they do not feel like they are there simply to make the plot move along. They are not cardboard cutouts of people, they have a backstory, interests and goals. Highway to Hellebore is, so far, the strongest book in the series, at least in my opinion. It is always a pleasure to listen to Hollis McCarthy's voice. These books are indeed cozy, but McCarthy adds another level of warmth to them.
This is such a fun and wildly entertaining series! Peony Bellefleur owns a florist shop in the quaint village of Willow Waters. Usually a nice, quiet place, the peace is broken by a speeding sports car driven by a brash former resident who has returned from Australia. Soon, Dennis Ratslaff has not only stirred up old grievances, he has also nearly killed a beloved older woman and her deaf and blind dog. Having read lots of cozy mysteries, fans of this genre know that his comeuppance will be swift and deadly!
The book is full of eccentric characters, including a few witches, a handsome werewolf, a medium and a talking parrot who is more than just a bird. There is plenty of witty dialogue, a few romantic moments, and a bit of magic, along with an few skeletons, both old and new. If you are a fan of a good cozy mystery, you can't go wrong with any of the author's books. I hope that this series is around for a long time because I can't wait to find out what new adventures Peony and her friends become involved in next!
Third book in the latest series of Nancy Warren, A Village Flower Shop Paranormal Cozy Mystery. And this mystery doesn’t disappoint!
After reading many of Nancy Warren’s series and books, you know that you’re in for a great read and a real treat! Nancy Warren’s stories always take you in as if you are there yourself and the main characters are people you wished you actually knew in real life.
In Highway to Hellebore, Peony is lucky to be surrounded by such an awesome group of unique friends who appreciate each other and on which she will be able to count on. And that is exactly what she will need, their support, to help solve mystery upon mystery happening in this story. The absolute funny part to me is, and one of my all time favorite characters, is the parrot Norman (Char’s familiar) who will be Peony’s greatest help in this awesome 3rd story. I laughed so many times with Norman’s mischief, I got tears in my eyes!
I totally recommend this series who gets even better by the book!
More excellent writing and character development from Nancy Warren - I just love everything this author writes! The third book in Nancy Warren’s delightful Village Flower Shop cozy mystery series, “Highway to Hellebore” continues the story of Peony Bellefleur, a widowed witch rebuilding her life in a beautiful Cotswold village in England. Her flower shop is thriving, and her slow-build romance with the handsome baron Alex (who also happens to be a werewolf) progresses in this volume. The mystery, as always in Nancy Warren’s books, is a good one, focusing on an obnoxious man who just about begs to be murdered. A Roman archaeological site is uncovered in the course of events. Nancy Warren is very good at developing characters who are interesting and likable, including our main character Peony, her love interest Alex and Peony’s growing group of good friends who help her solve the mystery. Norman the parrot familiar has become a favorite character for me, and is particularly helpful in this book. I can’t wait to read the next installment in the series!
Highway to Hellebore is an interesting return to the Sleepy Cotswold town of Willow Waters. It is the third book in the delightful Village Flower Shop Paranormal coz y mystery series. It can be read as a stand-alone although there are recurring characters and a slow burn romance running g through the books.
Peony is a witch and flowershop owner who has a close circle of friends and family: including her mother who is a medium, Char who is a young witch trying to get used to her powers and Alex ... A werewolf. As well as these brilliant characters there is Norman, Char's clever and hilarious parrot familiar who makes me laugh out loud at his antics.
Nancy Warren has a way of creating believable characters that you want to be friends with and places that you want to visit. This easy to read cozy paranormal mystery is an absolute gem and I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to all fans of this genre and anyone who enjoys a light, easy read. It deserves 5* and I am looking forward to my next return to Willow Waters.
Highway to Hellebore by Nancy Warren Village Flower Shop Cozy Mystery Series Book Three Peony Bellefleur owns a flower shop in the Cotswold village of Willow Waters. It’s usually a peaceful town…until recently. And now it’s not peaceful as newcomer Dennis Ratslaff arrived in his Lamborghini. A loud man with a loud car who seems to believe the speed limit isn’t for him. And then there’s Gillian Fairfax, a fairly new widow who always needs a man around. Her most recent is a real doozy. The fellow seems possessive, which is not good since Dennis also knows Gillian. Another story filled with humor, murder, and everything in between. Colorful characters such as Norman, the talking parrot who is Char’s familiar. Oh, yes, Peony is a witch, as is Char. And then there’s Alex, a guy that Peony is getting very fond of, and he’s a werewolf. Humorous series that has me looking forward to the next book the minute I finish one. https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
Absolutely wonderful, so well-written! We're back in the sleepy little village of Willow Waters where Peony owns a flower shop. It's a beautiful day when out of the blue, a fast-driving, rude as anything man comes back into town to sitr up trouble and buy the gorgeous historic estate that's the pride of the town with every intent to destroy everything that makes it special. When he turns up dead, Peony's witchy powers help her solve the crime.
Oh what a delight. This has everything - lovely, lovely town people and their antics (there's a lovely little dog in this that's quite the mascot of the book), a great romance between Peony and her werewolf boyfriend, beautiful flowers, an Italian restaurant to die for, a lot of history and a lot of humour. Peak cosiness, adore this series, I think it's Nancy Warren's best.
Highway to Hellebore: A Village Flower Shop Paranormal Cozy Mystery 3 by Nancy Warren is a great deal of fun. A cozy murder mystery with a dead character that no one is sorry to see go. However, Peony believes justice should be served so she along with her support group of friends go about solving this crime.
With a historical home to be saved, a possible Roman burial site, lots of suspects, and a hint of romance, this is one amazing read. Aren’t Peony and Alex just so perfect together? The paranormal is easy, the mystery harder to solve than I thought, and the characters delightful, it is a book not to be missed.
4.5 Stars I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed Highway to Hellebore. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The series, IMO, has gotten better as it's gone along. I'm glad that I gave the second book a chance. I enjoyed Alex and Peony's relationship progressing. I do hope that she opens up to him and tells him that she's a witch.
I think anyone reading this book one immediately who was going to end up dead. That man was so unlikable and pompous that no one would miss him. Gillian really knows how to pick them. Besides Alistair, the men she's been involved with have been total jerks and stereotypes. Hopefully, her time away serves her well.
I hope that Char decides to stay. I like her and hope that whatever she and Owen have going on processes as well. Norman is still a hoot. Peony's mom, I tolerate but I wouldn't care if she wasn't around. I like her roommate Hillary.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Peony Bellefleur is drawn into another murder when a brash, bullying Australian moves into the grade 1 listed property in the village... he's got big plans to gut the property interior and dig up the equally listed gardens and meadow for a pool house... he knows he can't but doesn't care because once it's done, what can anyone do... he creates strife among the village, and there are multiple suspects when he's discovered dead in the hole he's had dug for his pool...
It could be better... it's just that nobody seems to question how Peony turns up with every dead body, the police didn't do any investigation, nobody seems to even wonder about the really weak reasons she had for being there when Leon died...
Peony is a widow who owns a local flower shop and is trying to find her way in life after her husband's passing. Who would think terrible things would happen in a small little town in England? Of course Peony finds herself wrapped up in solving another murder in her small town. I think this has become my favorite series of Nancy Warren's. The characters, for the most part, are sweet and kind. Peony has made herself a little family with her borders and her mother. Alex is like a fresh breath of air in Peony's life. Overall, I really enjoy this series and if you love paranormal cozy mysteries, then pick this series up!
An obnoxious new neighbour moves into Willow Waters, causing havoc amongst the residents. It’s no real surprise when a murder ensues, and Peony find herself peripherally involved. Good thing she has her friends and their familiars and alter-egos to help out!
An enjoyable mystery, this one introduces a few new characters, and furthers Peony’s relationship with Alex, just a little. It’s a fun story, with lots happening, and it’s all set against a pretty Cotswolds backdrop- making the armchair detective want to move to this beautiful part of the world. This one is definitely for those who like their cosy mysteries a little paranormal and magical.
Although the hilariously punny book titles and gorgeous book covers might catch your eye, Ms. Warren’s well-crafted (and I just couldn’t resist a pun either) stories will entertain you. The MC shares her home with a circle of friends, each of whom brings talents that enrich their lives. And, then there is the MC’s developing romance….
Although it was my pleasure to receive this ARC from the author, it was completely my choice to share my honest review.
There’s a new man in town with a fast, hot ride. He’s bought one of the historic mansions and has lots of plans. None of which will be approved. But he’s not actually new. He grew up here and made lots of enemies before he left. Peony has bad feelings all over about this. But she has lots of good feelings about her date with Alex. There’s a lot going on in this book and most of it’s good. I loved it and can’t wait for more.
I absolutely adore this series! It's not just the mysteries that are good. The characters and the settings are wonderful too! Peony is such a great main character! She is likeable and fun! Her group of friends are just as fun! They add a lot of color and life to the book! The setting is wonderful too! I love the Cotswolds and feel like I'm being transported there every time I pick up the book! This is a really fun read!
This is a quick read that doesn't take very long. The main storyline is that the new car belongs to an Australian who used to live in the next village. However, as normal, there is soon a murder and Peony is trying to find out who did it. Also, Peony's date with Alex Stanford aka Lord Fitzlupin takes place. Spoilers... he doesn't know she's a witch yet. Still love the parrot 🦜 Norman. Peony's familiar Blue merely stays at home and sleeps a lot.
What do you get when you cross a flamboyant braggart and an overly muscled jealous ball of testosterone? Why murder of course, but who did it? Much is brewing in this installment of the series and it isn't just the murders that are brewing but much more personal relationships to Peony, our favorite florist! This series just keeps getting better and the narrator always does an exceptional job of bringing the characters and emotions to life! I can't wait for more!!!
