Benjamin Wrath is among the first officers to get sent to the Andromeda Galaxy.
As part of the Sentient Crime Division, millions of light years from Earth, Wrath's precinct is in charge of maintaining order in a chaotic new frontier, tasked with protecting the rights of all sentient beings.
But that's only the beginning.
While investigating a triple homicide, he'll also have to prevent more killings, stand against internal corruption, and stop a war that threatens to unravel an empire.
With clashing alien cultures and tension on both sides, his task isn't easy, especially out here where the only person you can rely on is yourself . . . and backup isn't coming.
Well it was bound to happen. After reading over 40 books by Chaney and loving them all, I finally found a series I did not like. I had to force myself to finish book one. It gets good reviews but just not from me. I found it tedious at times and boring at others. Just could not get into the characters and It was a real slog for me. Giving it two stars because I like the author and they all cannot be winners.
From the outset it is clear that this series is aimed at a younger audience, but signs remain of the expected story for a tale about The Last Reaper or Jace. While Breaker 105 is enhanced only while wearing a suit (the Breaker unit), he has a dark past of which his crew of 'detectives' know little about. They are tasked to investigate a triple homicide involving a Human and two Avians, which may tie in to the apprehension of a master criminal involved in many things including sentient trafficking. The ex-quartet of Breakers all make their own individual appearance, though it is unclear whose side they are on..... As the investigation proceeds, a more complex tale involving politicians and potentially corrupt cops and a potential war between species -including one that has remained outside the general purvey for unclear reasons.... This is an interesting start to a potentially long and convoluted tale with intriguing characters, complex interactions, suspense, violence and action where not everything is what is seems.
I look forward to seeing where this story will go next.
At a minimum this is of the high quality I’ve come to expect from JC and SM, both individually and in partnership; this, a thoughtful and intricate tale, with strong characters pursuing a nebulous, goal at great personal risk - relying on honour, strength of friendship and pure grit to right wrongs.. it’s all good stuff
And the mayhem, we should not forget that…
The first episode gives us an insight into the main characters and their histories, and establishes some of the outline to the story. The challenges are, as yet, unclear; but meeting them will be messy, and loud.
The risk? War. The protagonists? Coming into focus, as yet unknown. The evidence? Dying.
Very little is as it seems; the good guys might not all be so good and, it seems the bad guys might not be bad after all, loyalties are unclear.
A fun start, it will be interesting to see where this goes.
This was a pretty good book. The story line was good and the characters were easy to to like, especially Kyn and the voice he was given. It was nice that everyone had fun with each other but when it was time for "business" everyone went at it with a vengeance.
This was about a triple murder that Wrath and his crew had to solve, and Wrath found two of his ex-team members in trouble; one was a dirty cop and the other was addicted to drugs. There was plenty of death and destruction in this book.
Not a whisper of romance and no swearing to speak of, so this book was definitely aimed at YA readers, which I'm not, so I'm on the border as to whether or not I'll read the next in this series.
As to the narration: Mark Boyett did a fabulous job on everyone's voice.
The characters are fun and the story was interesting. There were definitely some plot twists. The reason I only gave a 3 star rating is that there is too much history that is danced around yet seems important to really feeling like you are in the universe.
If you like the action in HALO, the drive of JACK REACHER to protect humans and all sentient beings, but are not sure who you can trust in your chain of command, other agencies or politicians… then buckle up! You’re in for a thrill ride of reading as Lt Wrath observes and assembles the facts and sorts 5he wheat from the chaff!
Very technical regarding procedure and legal processes. Enlightening of the wow, when and why of search and seizure in the criminal cases they are involved in. Explaining the reasons for action in a palatable form as part of the exciting and boring parts of the heroes turned cops. I liked it and am looking forward to the coming adventures.
My only bit of frustration with this book was that it is listed as book 1, but there were things mentioned that were assumed I should know what they were. I thought maybe this was a takeoff from another series I’d missed? If so, I definitely missed out. Otherwise, I enjoyed the story and characters and world building.
I probably don't need to say that the body count is high, and the violence can be graphic. I like Wrath and his crew; Kyn is fascinating. The story is a definite page-turner, and I'm looking forward to book 2.
Love this performance by Marc and the writing by Moon and Chaney. Great detail to the mc and cast, from police procedures in space to the sci-fi quirks that made this strong in both genre aspects. I’d love to keep listening. Onto book 2!
I found this book to be very interesting. Full of action, suspense, intrigue and deceit throughout the book. I was intrigued by the crew of the ship and how they are looking for a drug addicted fighter.
One of my least favorite writing styles. The characters are a sketch at best. Everyone has a million years of history that is vaguely hinted at. It's a fun mystery but it's going to resolve in a predictable way some number of books down the way.
A surprisingly great story! Because of the beginning!
Stick with it though, by the time the story comes together, you'll have s hard time putting it down. The best part, for me,is that the sequel is already published. I will be reading it, right after the newest Slip Runner!!!!
Great start of a new series, I can't wait to read more from this author. I received this book as a Free copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
A space procedural with a protagonist with a past which is referred to often but never really expanded enough to know why it matters to the current story.
Police work in the Andromeda galaxy chasing bad guys and trying to solve multiple murders. Well written and with interesting characters. A great story.
