In the eastern reaches of Kraterra, the humans have begun to chase the wild and magical things into the shadows of the forest, and while a new science, and the emergence of a new religion have left little room for wonder, there may yet be time for a little magic…
When an alchemist with a silver tongue ventures into a kingdom with an empty treasury, a prince with a greedy heart, and an impossible request will turn Ranlion’s life upside down. He’s determined to fulfill the prince’s request, but when time runs short and his life hangs in the balance, what will he trade for an impossible wish?
Alletha is a child of the woods, an orphan with a hundred brothers and sisters. Happily ever afters don’t exist in the greenwood. There is only survival. Stolen away by a fairy curse when she was only a baby, Alletha has grown up wild and strong alongside her foundling family.
“I’m in the business of granting wishes… but all magic comes at a price.”
In Brightsoll Forest at the edge of Ely Citadel, the world of men creeps ever closer and as Alletha’s twenty-first birthday approaches, she yearns to know more about these strange creatures who live without magic, and whom she is forbidden to speak to. Her interest in life at the citadel started as a game—but when an alchemist on the edge of desperation begs for her help, can Alletha take the risk that she might be discovered, or leave him to his fate?
This was an easy, fun read. There aren’t many reviews that explain what this book is about, and the description also isn’t very clear, so: This is a dark rumpelstiltskin retelling. It features a dual first-person POV, and incorporates magic, alchemy influences, deception and royalty. It’s a short read, at 200-and-odd pages, but I finished this in just over an hour. There are some mild-spicy scenes from about 50% in. I found this to be an enjoyable read.
I gave this a 2 star but I’d give it a 2.5 if I could. It wasn’t terrible, I was just a little confused.
Generally it flows well and the plot is mostly clear and linear. The story itself seems a little juvenile, which can feel alarming with the spice that does pop up about halfway through the book. It’s not smut, but there are a few intimacy scenes necessary to drive the plot.
It’s a quick read, at a little over an hour, and for the most part it’s engaging (although, a little juvenile). The characters make sense buy I definitely missed the distinction in the begging and was utterly lost 😅
I feel like the plot was building up to some huge reveal and while there was a a big “twist” there at the end, I was confused. 😅
1.5⭐️? This was labelled as a “Dark Fantasy Romance” and there wasn’t even 1 dark moment about it so I was a little disappointed in that aspect… The MMC was soooo sooky that I felt like he had the mind of an 8 year old which really did piss me off in a way and made it a struggle to get through the book… Idk, it was a free book so can’t complain too much…
Such a cute read! Finished this in a day because I absolutely couldn’t put it down! It’s such a fun retelling of the Rumpelstiltskin story. Classic fairytale + a good amount of spice = this masterpiece. Loved it! 😍
okay love that's it's a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin that it's his daughter. who is helping a lone traveler who just does magic tricks. by asking him to make a wish and giving him a price, she helps him make gold for the prince.
