Tautly paced, The Byways has aspects of both The Lightning Thief and Alice in Wonderland with a protagonist who must learn the language and laws of another realm in order to find herself and her way home. This lush, well-written YA fantasy tale follows CeeCee as she overcomes her feelings of being an outsider by courageously embracing herself through a series of trials rife with humor and action—all within this gorgeous paranormal universe. I was given an ARC to read with no expectation of a review outcome or payment.

The Byways by Mary Pascual is a dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland. Instead of cute fairy-like creatures, this story is full of sometimes disgusting and weird characters. It won't give you sweat and sparkling Wonderland but a stinky, dark, and dirty Byways. This idea is interesting and quite refreshing.

The main character CeeCee is a neurodivergent high school student. She is complicated and sometimes unrelatable. To be completely honest - I didn't like her at all. Maybe I am too old.

This story is weird, drug-like, and sometimes somehow complicated to read. The Byways wasn't a good choice for me, but it could be a good choice for someone else, who is looking for some dark Alice in Wonderland.

Thank you NetGalley and SparkPress for the eARC!

I wasn't eager to sit down and write this review, because I'm honestly now sure how I felt about the book.

Thinks I liked to start. It was a well-written, unique take on Alice in Wonderland. I liked CeeCee (our FMC) and appreciated the journey she went on as a neurodivergent HS student. I loved seeing her growth and self-acceptance by the end. I also really liked Jesse, Apple Cheeks, and Kelly. They were fun secondary characters and I enjoyed all of their interactions.

That said there were aspects that I really didn't enjoy. The first being the pace. I found it to be really slow and it didn't really pick up until the 60% mark. I also strongly disliked the Jib Jab, Doc M., and the Queen. All of them made me cringe. In fact, I nearly DNF'd after a scene with the Jib Jab who was a pedophile. Her interaction with the Queen was also so strange and the request of the Queen made me really uncomfortable and confused.

Overall, I don't think this is a book I'd recommend unless you're a big Alice in Wonderland fan.

Thank you to BookSparks for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A big thanks to YABC for providing an advance reader copy, in exchange for an honest review.

You've never read an Alice in Wonderland retelling like this.

The Byways by Mary Pasual is YA contemporary fantasy that pulls heavy inspiration from the likes of Alice in Wonderland and Neverwhere. CeeCee just wants to be like everyone else, but with her uneven temper and knack for getting in trouble because of it, her high school life is overly complicated. Until she stumbles upon the byways, a series of alleys filled with magic, and people that are often forgotten by society. Including those that might not be all that human. But as grand and wonderful the byways are, as they are indeed filled with monsters, drug pushers, the homeless, and constant political upheaval, CeeCee just wants to go home. But that may be more complicated than initially planned, as once you enter the byways, you can never leave.

This was an interesting retelling to say the least. As it hit all the high points of Alice in Wonderland's whimsy and absurdity, while still grounding itself in the limelight of reality. Though I do wish we did have less of that, though more in the sense of the setting being more than just a series of alleyways that seemed to go on and on and on and on. Until CeeCee found someplace else to exist, and ultimately return to an alley.

Yet with this limited setting, Pascual found a way to make her beautiful writing style blend perfectly with a plot that was both confound and a character that you just had to root for. Though the tone did shift quite a bit about halfway through the book, and I found myself wondering if it was printing error made to splice two books together.

I would gladly recommend this novel to anyone in need of a soft reset on the whole fantasy fad. Or in those in need of retelling that doesn't build an entire world just to resolve something that wasn't addressed in the original material.

This book was amazing! It's like Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland had a baby but a book version. Minus the dragons and the evil dark wizard of course! Absolutely loved reading this book. I hope there is a sequel and possibly a beginning of a series. If there is another book I would love to read it!

Initial Thoughts: Interesting, though the pace doesn't really pick up for 60% of the book. A lot of walking through alleys. I could have used more explanation on why people were looking for the protagonist, too.

A Mesmerizing Blend of Fantasy and Self-Discovery: "The Byways: A Novel" by Mary Pascual

Mary Pascual's "The Byways: A Novel" invites readers into a world where neurodivergent high school student CeeCee Harper finds herself entangled in a realm of magic, alleys, and forgotten beings. As CeeCee seeks an escape from this mysterious world, the narrative unfolds into a captivating journey of self-discovery, friendship, and resilience.

Pascual's writing crafts a darkly enchanting atmosphere reminiscent of "Alice in Wonderland" and Neil Gaiman's works. Through CeeCee's encounters with monsters, outcasts, and political turmoil, the story's pacing remains engaging, immersing readers in an intricately woven narrative.

The heart of the novel lies in CeeCee's transformation, as she evolves from a troubled teenager to a tenacious and resourceful individual. Themes of identity and belonging are skillfully threaded throughout the story, resonating with readers on a personal level.

"The Byways" is a masterful blend of fantasy and emotional depth. Pascual's talent for world-building and character development shines, offering a tale that will captivate not only fans of Gaiman and Christina Henry but any reader seeking an enthralling journey into the unknown.

This young adult fantasy had an intriguing premise where the left out and the left behind are pulled into the byways and back alleys of an alternate world existing right within our "normal" world. CeeCee is a teenager who I suppose would be considered neurodiverse, but is bullied as well as often in trouble in school, and her temper and alienation lead her inadvertently into the bizarre and often dark and scary Byways. When she discovers some people can get out, but the longer she stays, the less chance she'll have, and she is also being hunted by the powerful Doctor M, well, getting out becomes her sole focus. But CeeCee discovers not everyone is evil and strange. And despite what everyone used to say, maybe not even CeeCee.
The story is well written but takes a while to take hold. I had a hard time going back to it for the first half or so. But once Jesse arrived, the story seemed to spin along quite nicely. Cats. Things are always better with cats. CeeCee is a very well realized character, very complex with believable reactions to unexpected events. She may not be all that likable at first, but she has a lot of stuff to work out, and she does, really thrashes it out. Good job.

CeeCee just never feels like she fits in. Being neurodivergent, she sees and experiences things differently, and that makes her weird in the eyes of the other kids. After a particularly bad day at school, CeeCee gets lost on her way home...and ends up in the Byways. A stark, edgy place with other people who don't seem to fit in, CeeCee can't help but wonder if this is where she belongs...

What can I say, I'm a sucker for Alice in Wonderland retellings. In this one, the Byways feel dark and chilling, definitely not the colorful wacky Wonderland of my Disney childhood. I liked CeeCee and couldn't help rooting for her - this was an enjoyable read, and I'm curious to see if there might be a sequel?

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ceecee doesn’t quite fit in, but she feels worst about it when her best friend Trudy accuses her of stealing!

This breaks Ceecee’s heart because she never thought Trudy would ever think she was capable of that… this leads her to cut school and roam around the city thinking of what happened! Lost in her thoughts she doesn’t realize she has cross over to another world knows as The Byways.

Running out of time she has to find a way back to her world - her adventure starts with meeting new people and understanding more about herself!

I really enjoyed this book a lot! Especially because it has a fairytale kind of plot it reminds me of Alice in Wonderland -

A fantasy journey into the byways, those passageways for people or maybe not people who don’t quite fit in. CeeCee the main character doesn’t fit in. She seems to be very much a loner and an undiagnosed neurodiverse teenager. That’s a pity because she gets no sympathy from her teachers or fellow students. As she runs from this people she finds herself slip into the byways. The problem is the Byways hold on to those that pass, and the populace that lives there are a strange, diverse and dangerous group. Maybe not the place CeeCee should stay. The Byways is a world made up of alleys, some dark characters, and a main character who feels she never fits in. CeeCee makes a bad decision one day and finds herself in the byways and doesn't know how it happened or how to get back home. I enjoyed the writing style and most of the characters. I will say I was thrown off a bit by one of them being a pedophile and another a drug pusher. I think I was so engrossed in the world that the pedophile especially jolted me back to reality, so I didn't like that. I have always loved Alice in Wonderland and knowing this story was inspired by that made me excited to read it.

This is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland. Cece gets into a fight with her best friend at school and gets very angry and just runs out of the school. She gets lost on the way home and ends up in the byways.

She meets Jesse and he sees her and understands her and she learns more about herself as he describes how he sees her. She is learning to control her anger and she isn’t worthless. She wants to find a way back home more than anything.

This is a beautiful story of love, friendship, and being comfortable in your own skin.

My Thoughts:
Retelling are one of my favorite reads I love when authors take a fairy tell and retell it in their own ways. This is a dark retelling of a cross of Alice In wonderland and Neverwhere. It’s about a young girl named CeeCee who just dosent feel like she belong or fits in she starts looking for something else and she finds it but she ends up in the byways and she finds herself around people she doesn’t want to be. We follow CeeCee on an adventure to find her way out. And find herself

Thank you @booksparks @shewritespress for having me on this #summerpopup booktour to read and review.

Ok, this book is eerily good. It is Alice Wonderland in contemporary world but darker. CeeCee and her “personality” paved her destiny and only she herself can determine her fate. The twists and turns, the ordeals and challenges made this book capable of captivating and capturing the inescapable darker world that we are in today. This is YA book is goosebump-y good.

The Byways took me on an exciting adventure. A unique dark twist of Alice in Wonderland kept me on my toes and reading. The dialog and interactions with CeeCee and the other characters were my favorite parts of the book. The descriptions are Very descriptive… I prefer more dialog, but I did enjoy being able to see the works through the CeeCees eyes.

CeeCee is a frustrated, misunderstood, angry teenager that is so sick of all that is happening in her life. Her teachers don't get her, she's bullied, she's an outsider and even her best friend is fighting with her. Everyone seems to think she's worth nothing, so maybe she is? In her worst moment of self-loathing she's suddenly lost in an alley that leads to The Byways - a world outside of our own filled with strange freaky creatures, forgotten people and very real danger. Much like Alice in Wonderland, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, The Wizard of Oz, and even a bit of Jim Henson's Labyrinth, this tale was so exciting and also full of fantastic life lessons. CeeCee discovers what she's really made of when she befriends Jesse, a cute boy (and also a cat!) and they stir up the status quo while racing to find her way home. But, now that she has found Jesse, does she really want to go back? The world of The Byways was so creatively rendered with some very creepy creeps. I highly recommend to anyone that enjoys this type of fantasy.

Cece is a neurodivergent high school student who doesn't feel like she fits anywhere: when she defends herself against her tormenters, she ends up in the principal's office. When she's overwhelmed by the noise and chaos of school, her teachers single her out and try to shame her. The final betrayal comes when her best friend insinuates that her other friends may think Cece is behind some missing money for a school fundraiser; Cece takes off and finds herself in the Byways, a world of the forgotten, full of alleys that change and confuse, with magic and dark figures with dark purposes. Desperate to find her way home, Cece meets some people who want to help her, and some who want to keep her for their own uses. A dark, urban reimagining of Alice in Wonderland, The Byways is full of familiar characters, but with a new spin. Themes of political unrest, bullying, homelessness, and drug abuse run throughout. A good additional purchase for collections where YA fairy tale reimaginings are popular.

Cece manages to find her way in between places, a place called The Byways. It is a spin on Alice in Wonderland and the main character has a whole bunch of diagnoses. ADHD and scenery issues among those outright named.
What was meant to be inclusive of the Nero Spicy crowd, and a fun depiction of a previous childhood favorite, this author missed their mark. I did not enjoy this novel and found it lacking. This is a Two Star read for me.
Cece wasn't exactly relatable, and there certainly wasn't enough time to build an attachment to her. The whole beginning felt rushed, but once they were in The Byways it felt pointless. Almost like she was on a drug trip.
I don't recommend this book, but if you like Alice in Wonderland spinoffs and enjoy new takes, maybe this book is for you.

I'm always interested in a different take on well known fairy tales, especially those that can be more dark and twisty. Alice in Wonderland always seems to be a perfect medium for that so I was eager to pick this one up.

I really enjoyed this unique take and while CeeCee wasn't always a likeable character, I found her to be genuine in her personality. I found the writing style to lend to the fantasy of the story but there were a few points where things felt a little inconsistent in the story because if felt like the overriding voice changed.

Overall this was a fun journey that I thoroughly enjoyed and I would definitely read from this author again.

If you are a fan of the City Between series by W. R. Gingell, run don't walk to get this book. The Byways is almost like a return to that place, but grittier. The main character, CeeCee, is portrayed with such depth and realism. Mad props to Mary Pascual for getting us inside the head of a neurodivergent teen. If you have issues of your own, you will recognize some of CeeCee's feelings and thoughts, and you will be able to grok others that are unfamiliar. Not every book has to be a series, I totally get that, and I love a standalone as much as a 10-book epic, but damn I hope we get to visit the Byways again.

I pulled this book off the library shelf at random (something I don't often do) and was pleasantly surprised that it was actually pretty good 😆 As a modern day Alice in Wonderland retelling, I loved the uniqueness of the "byways" and the intensive world building the author did to bring it to life. (I also liked how the "Cheshire cat" inspired character was also the love interest ahah). I do wish it had tied up some more loose endings tho, but overall it was a good read, and definitely very creatively written 💙

I rarely read YA fiction—I read The Byways on a friend's recommendation, and I am SO glad I did. CeeCee is a deeply likable, deeply hurting main character, and her journey through the alleyways and byways of a world whose weirdness masterfully evokes Alice in Wonderland was absolutely captivating. Yes, parts of the book are uncomfortable, but it only makes sense that a neurodivergent character struggling to navigate a world explicitly hostile to her would be guarded and uncomfortable and constantly on high alert. Highly recommend!

A compelling and fast-paced story that I couldn't put down. While CeeCee's background is not fully fleshed out and we don't know where the story takes place, the description of the Byways is imaginative and unique. CeeCee's neurodivergence is an integral part of her but doesn't take over the story. The characters we meet are memorable. There are enough loose ends that we can hope for a sequel.

DNF at 35%.

This book was way more disturbing than I was expecting. Maybe it was wrong of me to except a middle grade book that dealt with some difficult subjects and had disability rep... But yeah this was not what I expected at all.
I'm sure some people would like a book like this tho!

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of this book!

This book was really hard for me to get through. I pushed through and made it about half way but I will be DNFing this book.

At times while reading this it was interesting but also sometimes made me feel uncomfortable.

This book has Alice in Wonderland vibes but make it weirder and dark with drugs and monsters.
