When Adina Carr is stranded in London by her ungrateful, not to mention philandering ex-boyfriend, she is about to call it quits and head back home to New York City with her tail between her legs, but through a bout of serendipity things are about to get a whole lot more interesting—and dangerous. On the very day she loses her job, she happens upon someone in trouble—and not just any someone. This someone is expected to become the high prince of all vampires, a centuries-old dispute notwithstanding. Jin, the vampire in question, has spent a lifetime being groomed to rule; yet, there is a tribe of rebel undead who will do anything to make sure he does not assume the throne. It is Adina who unwittingly gives him a second chance and finds herself in the middle of a bloody battle—and falling hopelessly in love.
Okay. I confess, this is one of the best vamp series I have read. The plot is well conceived and the characters interesting. I gave the book one star because the ending pissed me off. It is one thing to write a book with a cliff hanger but the level of incompleteness of this ending made me want to throw my Kindle. Had I known the writer would need to take a nap for some undisclosed period of time, I would have waited to read it. Many series have cliff hangers like JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood. I just finished "Rush of Wings" and it left many aspects of the story unfinished but it wrapped enough that I don't feel cheated. My review is a warning to readers that love a well written series but need the satisfaction of some sort of wrap -- wait. It's really good but its not that good.
This was a good book. Probably would be a Five star if it were completed. Since I only seem to read half a book, I am only giving 3 stars. I am so p'd at the way this ended. It was released in 2009, It is not 2011 and still no sequel? Uggh!! Update (5/11) - I have changed my rating for this book to 4 stars...I am still withholding the 5th star until the sequel is released! I have read about 4 more times and it gets better everytime! Update (10/12). October 2012. Still no sequel. This author must be having some serious writer's block. Update (1/24/14). Four (4) years. Still no sequel. Amazing. Update (10/20/14) Wow. Such a good book. To bad no ending and the writer has disappeared. I officially have given up looking for an ending. Update (12/27/15) SIX YEARS and no sequel. Not a peep from the author. This book is officially the KING OF CLIFFHANGERS. Update (2/9/23) Released in 2009. 14 years. THAT IS ALL.
The "High Prince" of vampires falls for 'gasp' a human, which endangers her very life in more ways than one.
This is a well-written IR paranormal story. The vampire, a gorgeous Asian male who is attacked and severely wounded, ends up seeking the help of a Black human female that he follows home.
From then on the female finds herself thrust in a world that she never knew existed and finds herself hunted down for that knowledge.
The only complaint I have is that it is only Part I and the author says on her facebook page that Part II won't be completed until possibly the end of 2010. So the long wait after an abrupt ending truly sucks since the story draws the reader in and leaves them wanting to find out what happens next in the brewing drama.
So.......I'm pissed now and you know why? Because after a lonnnnnnng time of reading crappy books all summer, I finally come across a book I fell in love with, and find out the author hasn't even put out a sequel. And mind you, the book came out in '09. Ms. Ali, if you ever look at this page at all, know you ain't shit for leaving ALL of us hanging.
Loved this engaging vampire story - re-read 6/21/2018 yet still no sequel written to Adina and Jin's story. PLEASE finish their story Hayat Ali... please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This book was just ok. I live for vampire stories. I have read lots but the story didn't hold my attention. I know that no two vampire stories are the same, but the story didn't seem innovative. It seemed like the author just took chunks of other stories and put them together. I found my self skipping over certain parts because I just didn't see the point. Then after all that for the author to end the book in such a lazy way...that truly pissed me off.
All I can say is , I LOVED THIS BOOK, cannot wait for the next installment, I just hope she keeps jin and Adina together
*******************A little spoiler****************************8 I read this again today and I really had forgotten about the dream with jin and adina, I had to take points off because I'm not into the bondage or anal thing and though I felt the connection between them, they did have sex very quickly and alot in the one day they were together before he left her. Damn
The Alpha Promise **UPDATE** I've been looking searching for answers regarding the SEQUEL ... Authors Twitter Page says... "ALPHA RISING" IS COMING SOON. Jin gets more than he bargains for when he lets Flaxon hide both him and his mate... She Thanks everyone for the support despite the delays ... https://twitter.com/HayatAliAlpha
This is a re-read for me, this book is so FREAKING good even the second time around I got goose bumps. This is one of the BEST I/R Vampire stories out there. I wish I could give this book 10 stars. I probably will read it again before the year is out....he he he he
Good book. I literally could not put it down. I am hoping book 2 will come out soon. I gave the book a three star rating because of the ending and also i felt that jin and adinas relationship felt rushed even though i liked them together.
this was very good for those who like sci-fi read; however you'll be like me waiting on the next edition which isn't out yet, very good book to read i must say
I agree with everyone else when they said this was a really good book. I wished the author written a sequel to this story. She did a great job telling this story.
4.7. An intriguing paranormal romance full of action, political drama and twists. The bond between the hero and heroine is sweet and spicy, even if it moves in typical "magnetic draw to you in only a short period of time" as it was handled well and the heroine even admits how it's all very fast. If you love a protective, growling possessive hero, you'll get it with this book.
I'm not so bothered by the "cliffhanger" as others are. Maybe it's because I've read that as of 2021 the next part is being worked on, though. While it does break the rule of not writing a book with the idea that you're going to just do a sequel, I feel as if it gave enough details to put together what we could expect next. As if, you're not literally left dangling over the edge wondering who lives / dies or any of that. Definitely a worthy read for lovers of paranormal romance, especially Black women in love. Extra bonus that the Alpha is an Asian man!
I could not get jiggy with this book. Lol the writing style sucked. There were typos. Forgotten words. The author did not pull me in I kept forgetting what I read... I took notes to just remember this little bit. I did not like the Jin he was a spoiled entitled brat... Who wanted his way. His parents especially his Mother plucked my nerve how you gonna raise him to be the High Prince but keep him ignorant to the stuff that he should know. LIKE THE REAL HISTORY of the Mixed Breeds and Vamps. Adina... really you helped him cleaned up the blood and all but have no idea who it is your helping... Flaxson is the only one I liked.. While they thought he was a selfish con artist... he really set up a whole kingdom and was looking out for his ppl!
3.5 Interesting characters. The h/H both got on my nerves sometimes. More so than she because many times I'm like bish are you dumb? The world building was beyond phenomenal though. The sexy scenes were indeed sexy. However, as the book came closer to the end, I realized that this was not going to be the full story. It ended on a cliffhanger and there is NOTHING to show the author will continue the story. I think this book is a few years old at this point. If I would have known that I would have never read the book.
The story of the unlikely pairing of a vampire, Jin, and a human, Adina is a big sweeping story with many characters and many moving pieces. I liked both characters very much. The story ends on a cliffhanger with no second book to tie up the many loose ends. That is unfortunate.
This book ends with a cliff hanger. I would have rated the book higher but there is no volume 2 to finish the story. Over all, lots of dialog and a confusing plot lines. However, grammar and character development were very good.
I was told that the second book is years overdue!! I still took a chance and read this book. They were not lying!! It was very good. Jin has to make the decision on whether to turn Adina and save the twin. Hopefully, book two will come.
Ok let me start off by giving a round of applause to the author Ms. Ali for writing an entertaining, well written (despite a few grammatical errors), refreshingly new vampire book. I was pleasantly surprised to find an IR paranormal novel that was longer that 30 pages and held my attention. The characters Adina and Jin complement each other well despite the lack of time actually spent in each others presence. The storyline and plot is well developed with intriguing elements of secrecy and suspense that do not distract the reader from the budding romance. The secondary character voices add a wealth of information and understanding of the vampire hierarchy that is not made readily apparent by the H and h. Surprisingly the other characters add to the romantic feeling of the novel. I often found myself rooting for Tobias and Chelina, feeling sympathy towards Flaxon and Sashi's plight and silently wishing for Eldon aand Xui to make there romance backstory known. Overall I will say this book is worth your while to read but I will say this, with all do caution, read at your on peril! I went in reading this book knowing that it was a cliffhanger but what I didn't know was that the author has been working on the book for years and it doesn't look like a sequel is due in the near future. I am completely p'd off by this because the story was sooo good. I really enjoyed reading it and now I feel that I cannot be completely satisfied until I find out how the story will end. There were too many questions left unanaswered, too many unresolved conflicts , and too many words, between lovers, left unsaid. Once again I say good job Ms. Ali but don't you think it's time your readers get their happy ending?
Interesting read, the author wasted no time, she jumped right into the meat and potatoes of it all...I like the storyline and the interracial love mixture, but I had to give 3 stars due to the overabundance of grammatical errors! This is unacceptable for a published author, where's the Editor?! I was correcting sentences while reading, that just takes away from focusing on the story...
Another negative is the reunion of Jin and Adina in the mountains, completely turned off by the sexual overtures mixed with the baby bonding, very disconcerting that the author would think readers would be turned on by the babies awareness of dad feeling up mom and making her moan and groan...twisted.
I am so upset by the cliffhangar ending! Getting engrossed on my kindle and hit next page and its the end! Where is part 2?!
3.5 stars. This book was dayum book, but WTH! A cliffhanger and where is the other book. I enjoy the book of Jin and Adina. Loved Maggie and Flaxon, but what how the hell does it end, what the hell happen; How can an author do this to us readers. I checked all bookstores online, and there is no second part, I am totally devastated, this is the first for me truly. I always try to finish books series when I know it is getting better but now, I have questions: (1) Who were there going to fight at the Lodge; (2) Where did Adina go? (3) Will the children survive? (4) Is Jin going to die? (5) Will something happen to Flaxon? (6)Who the hell is Cheryl going to save? (7) Will Jin's parent loved there grandbabies? There is more 1001 questions that I want to give but I can't because there is no other book. Again, WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in desperate need of book two! This was such a thrilling first half of a fascinating world. It brings a bit of a twist on the familiar of what we all love about vampire romance novels. Adina tries to remain brave when saving the life of Jin, a vampire she finds half dead and begging for her help. Only for her to be thrust into this hidden world of the supernatural and on the run. Saving Jin's life that night just may have cost her hers. I enjoyed this interesting cast of characters despite which side they were on in the fight to control vampire politics. Jin and Adina are dealing with the true consequences of their ignorance in this unforgiving situation they find themselves in.
I absolutely loved this book. Finished in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down. Great characters, great plots, so much emotion, good rythm. A few typos and gramatical errors but nothing detracting from the story. Can't wait for the next installment! Thank you so much Ms. Ali for this great book and please hurry and give us the next treat from your imaginative world. Loved Jin and Flaxon equally and Adina is just great as well as Sashi. I'm on needles and pins waiting for book 2! Thank you so much for gifting us with this lovely story but please give us the conclusion!
