A life-long history nerd, I'm a fan of 1920s-1940s films, the New York Public Library, Art Deco and ancient ruins. Favourite books include: 'The Wind Eye' by Robert Westall, 'The Princess Bride' by William Goldman, 'A Month In The Country' by J.L. Carr, 'Heartburn' by Nora Ephron, 'The Penelopiad' by Margaret Atwood, 'I Capture the Castle' by Dodie Smith and 'The Red Tent' by Anita Diamant.

I'm on GoodReads as both a reader and a writer. As a reader, I understand the value of critical reviews - they can be funny and illuminating, and sometimes pique my interest in reading a book more than a rave would. As a writer, I know they can sting and want to avoid bad karma. Therefore, I'm a generous marker, and my GoodReads rating system runs the gamut from 4* to 5*. If I don't like a book, or DNF, then I won't post it here.

Many thanks ❤️💐 if you've left a review of one of mine. I won't respond personally, as it's against GoodReads' etiquette guidelines to comment on/like reviews of your own work, but I'm really grateful for you taking the time.

Happy reading 📚💫

It’s nice to find a good contemporary Christmas book not filled with horror and not sappy sweet. This is my favorite this year and fits those requirements. The characters are interesting and spirited. One IS a spirit. I particularly enjoyed the tourist-in-NYC aspects of the book. Beyond the present day city there are fun bits of light time travel back to 1920s Broadway, glamorous showgirls and automats. Im guessing the research must have been fun for the author.

The holidays are approaching and although I am behind on my Christmasy reads, I am most pleased to kick off this season with Margo Laurie's "New York Miracle."

I chose this novella as a study piece for my writing class and it did not disappoint. At a little over 150 pages, this book evoked all the holiday feels, and a solid storyline that left me satisfied. It is short, but sweet, and very well-written. The author has done a fantastic job of conveying the story in a gentle way that immersed me within the setting, and I felt vested in the characters. This is a difficult feat to achieve in a constricted word count, but the author pulled it off seemlessly.

As an old movie buff, I was delighted to be transported back to New York in the 1930s. The author's writing talent truly shines here as her rendition of this bygone era is exquisitely vivid in detail. It made for an entertaining, and original twist for a Christmas read.

If you are looking for a quick, Christmasy read that is well-paced, and brimming with detail, this book should definitely be on your holiday reading list.

Dare I say, I believe I will be reading this book every holiday season as I was utterly captivated. Highly recommended!

Happy Reading!

I finished this novella a few days ago. I delayed writing a review, fearing I wouldn't be able to find the right words to convey just how fantastic it is. I am a fan of historical fiction, but this novel elevates the genre to a new level. Seamlessly, the author weaves a ghost story and a romance into her story. She has created a rich cast of characters, and the pacing is perfect. This was a fun read. Because I love this author's writing style so much, I have read 3 of her books. I hope she writes more.

Holiday Magic

Ellie came to New York from Scotland to visit her Aunt Bernice who made handmade fans, it was the family business and Ellie hoped to learn it. While in New York she stayed at a hostel kept by nuns for single women that had been in business since her grandmother came to New York.

There’s an oddly handsome man in a suit that hangs around the hostel, the only man who seems to be tolerated there. He sings the kind of music old people tend to enjoy, but it doesn’t seem at all odd for him. Come to think of it, although his suit is a classic style it seems a bit dated but in good repair.

Ellie will learn things about her family that she never knew, and maybe some of her family will learn some things too. The strange man is just part of the mystery.

I’m giving this a 4.5 star for fun, great writing and creativity. Pure hokum, but a good time is had by all.

This Novella was a delight to read.
It featured Romance, A Ghost Story, and a brief Time-Slip.

Ellie leaves her home in Scotland to spend time as an apprentice to her Great-aunt, who is in the business of making and selling fans.

Ellie moves into a hostel for 3 months, and that is where she first meets James Denny, a former actor, who hangs around the hostel.

They become friends and she learns about his lost love, who lived at the hostel many years previously.

She sets out to help him locate the lady, and so begins a whirlwind of surprises for all concerned.

I really enjoyed this story, which was full of New York history, with a cast of quirky characters. At times, the action was so well described, I felt I was watching it on a screen.
I shall definitely be watching out for more from this author.

I received an Advance Review Copy of this book, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.

With Halloween coming this month, I wanted a book with a ghost story. I thought Ellie's great aunt's job was an unusual choice the author made, but it was a welcome one. It made her a unique character.

The way she met James was unusual, as was James' backstory. I loved the quuirky plot. I love books set in New York. Throw in a lot of history of the city and New York Miracle is completely original.

It's memorable and I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks to Margo Laurie, Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random Resources for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Review for 'New York Miracle' by Margo Laurie.

Read and reviewed for Margo Laurie, Calleia Press and Rachel's Random Book Tours .

Publication date 18th December 2022.

This is the first book I have read by this author.

The storyline is unique and filled with magic, history, Christmas, romance and is an absolutely charming, sweet read. It is definitely a strange and different storyline but one that is perfect to read curled up next to the fire with a hot chocolate while you delve in and explore New York. I loved delving into the 30's and discovering some intriguing historical elements and events of New York City in times gone by. Margo's lovely descriptions will leave you skating on the ice, devouring Thanksgiving dinner and enjoying the magical atmosphere. It is a beautiful Christmas miracle in the busy city of New York which will warm your heart throughout. Although it is a short novella Margo fills it with adventure, festivities, friendship, family, nostalgia, history and so much more!!! All that I can say without giving anything away is grab a hot drink, snuggle under the duvet and get travelling through cities and time in this charming, nostalgic and magical journey!!!

I wasn't only invested in the storyline but also the characters. They were all strong and we'll developed and although this book is a novella Margo still manages to build each of the characters up enough to bring them all to life as you fly through the pages. I adored Ellie who was a lovely kind character that I would love to meet again. She sticks up for other characters even when she doesn't know them well and doesn't abide bullying or unkind words. I loved getting to know her as well as her great aunt Bernice and her colleagues Kara and Marcus. Ellie meets James who the nuns who run the boarding house call strange but Ellie finds him mysterious and charming. I loved how sweet and romantic he was and I adored going on there past and present journey with them. They are all just absolutely fantastic characters and I loved getting to know them. I won't say anymore but there are definitely some lovely magical surprises to look forward to!!!

Overall a lovely charming and magical Christmas novella!!

New York Miracle by Margo Laurie

This is a sweet, ghostly story with a touch of romance. I recommend this book to believe in a world filled with miracles, to experience love, and to have a heartwarming feeling.

Ellie is traveling to Manhattan for a fan-making apprenticeship with her aunt. She stays at a lodge, where she meets Broadway actor James Denny and finds him friendly. He is looking for his lost love, and Ellie offers to help him. This results in unwrapping old secrets and days of adventure.

The characters were adorable and quirky. This delightful read has elements of time travel too, and I found it unique, beautiful, and interesting with its detailed description and history. I could guess some bits of the story, but that didn't dampen my excitement to see things unfold.

This was fun to read and can be read for both the Halloween and Christmas seasons. Overall, I enjoyed this.

Rating ~ 4✨

I honestly enjoyed this novella so much. It was a fun, whirlwind of a read. We meet a mystery character who turns out to be a ghost, have a little bit of a travel through time, and plenty of fun and romance too. The author is clearly an expert on New York in the thirties - I felt I learnt a lot about history just through reading it, and it was very well-written too, with superbly detailed descriptions - I could totally picture the chorus girls, the neon signs, the roast chestnut sellers etc.

I'm a big fan of 'Back to the Future', and the TV series 'Ghosts', and love a romance too, so this novella ticked a lot of boxes for me.

Book 30 of 2023 - ✅! Thank you to NetGalley, Calleia Press & Margot Laurie for an ARC of New York Miracle in exchange for my honest review.

New York Miracle by Margot Laurie was a quick and cute novella, that I read for some Christmas in July (I started it in July) vibes. Ellie Peach, our MC, goes to New York for an apprenticeship with her great aunt’s fan-making company. While Ellie is at her accommodations, set up by her great aunt, she encounters a young man - James - who consistently hangs out around the entrance of the lodging, and he piques her interest.

[SPOILERS BELOW]

I very quickly figured out that James had some sort of connection to Ellie’s family, and figured that it was her great-grandmother due to James’ (who’s a ghost) age.

[END SPOILERS]

Laurie’s writing is vivid and compelling - I could certainly picture everything she was describing in my head, though I think the novella could have benefitted from being just a bit longer to really flesh out the paranormal and time-travel aspects (some characters were accepting of that just a little to quickly in my opinion).

If you’re looking for something short, Christmas-y and cozy, but not looking for spice (it was never marketed as a spicy book) this is a good choice! 3.5/5 ⭐️ overall!

This novella made for a lovely read. It contains elements of a ghost story, a short period of time travel and a festive read all rolled into one. Considering it is only 154 pages in length the author has done a great job in combining all of these elements.

I've read lots of reviews describing this novella as "cute", and I'd have to agree. It made me think of a Hallmark movie, but more offbeat and a bit more intelligent than the usual fare.

That said, despite its appeal, I didn't totally fall in love with New York Miracle.

First, though, the good things: I really enjoyed the author's evocation of 1930's New York, and old timey movies, music, and theater in general. I can't speak as to how historically accurate all of it was, but all of that felt legit and charming to me, and Margo Laurie's love of these things radiated through the pages. Bonus: I especially loved that she included a brief scene in a Horn & Hardart automat, one of the places I'd most like to visit if I could travel back in time.

I also loved the idea of the story in general - a person helping a ghost, with a little bit of time travel and wandering around New York City, one of my favorite settings, to boot.

On the other hand, it's funny: While many authors are praised for making a setting come to life, I often don't get that feeling but here I did...but when it came to characters, I felt that there was a lot left to be desired. Oh, the characters in this story are all distinctive enough, but often Laurie breezes through things that might get us to know them better, or even understand their motives. And some characters/plotlines seem to just go nowhere. Like what was the point of lingering on talking about Ellie's coworker Marcus and even having them shoot romantic TikToks together, when in the end nothing relevant came of it? Had this been a novel-length book, I feel like Laurie might have created a romance for Ellie that sort of paralleled or evolved alongside the main plotline.

Speaking of the main plotline - the solution of who "Libby" was felt very obvious, and also the way that James was acknowledged/seen by everyone in the lodging house but had NEVER had anyone help him, felt strange. Why not do the classic ghost thing of having him only appear to Ellie for some reason...? Then again, noting that in the end notes, Laurie talks about liking Cary Grant and films like "Topper" made me wonder if she just wanted to sort of shrug off convention and be a little silly/irreverent about certain ghostly things.

Another unusual gripe I have about this book is how Laurie's British writing style often bled into her dialogues - something I wish she could have fixed by asking someone (a fan, friend, volunteer, ARC reader, etc.) American, preferably from New York, to read her manuscript. It's funny because I usually feel this way in the opposite case, when American authors write books set in the UK!

Also, I didn't really like the fan shop plotline. I didn't feel like it added all that much, and the unconventional job felt more like a distraction to me than anything else. I get how it sort of tied in, but I just wish something else could have been chosen instead (theater costumes? Old timey video/bookshop? Antiques store?). But, that said, I do have to give props to Laurie for choosing something a bit different than the usual romcom trope jobs.

My last gripe is probably one I'm not sure most people would agree with me on.

All of this aside, New York Miracle makes for a light, pleasant read, especially if you're a fan of vintage New York. A nice little read for the holidays, or anytime you want to escape for a bit.

Alright, buckle up for a rave because "New York Miracle" just snagged itself a solid 5 stars from me! 🌟

This novella took me on a wild ride through the bustling streets of New York, and let me tell you, it was fuuuun. Margo Laurie, you've crafted a story that's equal parts heartwarming and heart-pounding.

The characters felt like old friends, the kind you'd share a cup of coffee with in a cozy NYC café. Laurie's writing style is as vibrant as the city itself, painting scenes with such vivid detail that I could practically smell the street vendors' pretzels.

The pacing was spot-on; it kept me flipping pages faster than someone going grocery shopping on an empty stomach. And the plot is just so charming that it left me clutching my kindle, begging for more. This is the kind of story that lingers in your mind long after you've closed the book.

Major shoutout to Margo Laurie for this gem, and a big thank you to the universe for dropping this book into my life. If you're into captivating stories set against the backdrop of the city that never sleeps, "New York Miracle" is your next must-read. Trust me on this one! 🏙️📚

I'd like to express my gratitude for having received an online copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

New York Miracle by Margo Laurie

New York Miracle is a sweet, Christmas ghost story with a dash of romance.

Ellie travels to Manhattan for a fan-making apprenticeship. While staying at a historic boarding house, she meets the eccentric James Denny. He claims to be a Broadway actor waiting for his lost love. When Ellie offers to help search for her, it leads to old secrets and adventure...

My Opinion

This is such a sweet novella, a true delight to read. I read this in one sitting, during my lunch break at work and it was a nice quick visit to New York. Laurie includes some vivid descriptions, making it easy to picture what she is describing. If you are looking for a quick, festive read with a bit of paranormal activity then look no further.

Reads more like a love letter to New York City than it does one between people. This is a short and sweet comfort read. Our main girl, Ellie Peach, leaves Ireland for New York to do a fan making internship; staying in an old nun-run boarding style house while there. The house's inhabitants are all woman except for one strange young man she's told can't be evicted. This young man, of course, turns out to be a ghost.

I thought this was going to be a love story between the main character and the ghost, but it turned out to be a case of Ellie trying to reunite him with his lost love.

I was truly surprised by the time travel elements.

This book was 'cute'. A sweet comfort read for someone who wants something light. Not much really happens in it (it could've been told in less words) but I still got through it fast. If you're into stories where people get second shots at a love long past or at life — or you just love ghost stories and stories that focus heavily on New York as its setting, this is the novella for you.

Well, that was an EXCEPTIONAL lovely read.

I really enjoyed this book. The way the author described all the New York City elements was especially wonderful- I felt like I was walking around with Ellie and James and even though I visited back in January, I am itching to go jump on the first plane leaving NL for NYC!

Ellie journeys from Scotland to New York to work at her great aunt's fan company and somehow meets the enigmatic James and stumbles into a old-timey mystery and adventure. Please do not read the reviews before diving in, we all deserve a bit of magic in our lives and I wish you to be surprised by this book.

A very romantic book in the terms of nostalgia and as I wrote in my GR update, a warm cosy coming home hug. Would recommend this novella especially around the holidays.

I received an ARC of this book (thanks!) and these are my own opinions.

Great Read!

What a delightful, magical story! Reminds me a bit about the story, “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”. An added bonus was getting a peek at another era as James (the ghost) was trying to make his way as a Broadway actor in the 1930’s and identifies things through those “glasses”. Numerous reflections throughout the story, as well as a “time trip” that happened when Ellie and James took the old bicycle to Central Park were intriguing. All of the characters were charming and lovable, the kind of people you just want to sit and chat with. The story moves along at a good pace, yet does not feel rushed. Certainly fills the need for a sentimental and heart warming Christmas tale that leaves a smile on your face.

On the surface, this is a quick read novella. But when you delve in, you soon realise just how much this little book has to offer.

#NewYorkMiracle is a delightful read. It’s magical, other worldly, romantic and utterly charming.

Ellie is likeable from the start and she meets a variety of vibrant characters along the way.

New York is alwatlys a wonderful setting for a book. Margo Laurie does the city proud with some fabulous descriptions that bring the story to life.

If you have a couple of hours to yourself. Snuggle in with this outstanding little book and lose yourself to Margo Laurie’s magic.

A very fun novella. We follow Ellie Peach, as she leaves her small town in Scotland to fly to New York, where she will work as an apprentice for her Great-Aunt in her Fan making business in Manhattan.
Ellie stays at a historic boarding house run by nuns, there she meets an eccentric man who says he is waiting for his true love to return, but it seems that he has been waiting for a long, long time.
Ellie says she will help him find out what happened to her, and their adventure begins.
Great story with a lot of charm, twists, and surprises.
Looking forward to another story by this Author

This was a sweet winter novella with a sprinkle of paranormal activity. I did guess the plot twist of who Libby was, but that didn’t take away from the charm of the story. The ending had me tearing up a little bit. I loved the magic system regarding the ghost and going back in time; however, I wish we had gotten more detail on this. Also, I feel like the fan internship element was kind of sloppy and just thrown in there for a reason for her to be in New York. Overall, a charming story. I would recommend for a quick Christmas read.

Thank you NetGalley for this chance to read and review. New York Miracle follows the story of Ellie, a Scottish lad on the way to America to intern with her estranged Aunt in making fans. During her stay, she encounters a strange young man who claims he's a ghost searching for his lost love. This novella has time travel, adventure, and glimpses into a historic era that we don't get to experience anymore. Me, being a New Yorker, appreciated this on another level. I enjoyed it so much! I can't wait to see what else Margo has in store for us.

I quite enjoyed this, the magic and the small mystery made it interesting. As Ellie tries to find her footing in New York, she finds herself navigating between the events of the past and the present. In the end, these parallels meet and something magical borns out of it. Winter in New York seems to be always magical. The characters were likeable and the story was captivating. It’s a great read for a snowy winter afternoon.

A fun Christmas read

I won this novella in a goodreads giveaway. It’s a quick read that has some festive Christmas elements, but would be fine to read year round. It’s a quick and cute story about a girl helping a ghost find his long lost love. While it doesn’t really make a ton of sense, I feel most of the story gaps can be chalked up to how short the story is. Overall, if you can get this on kindle unlimited or something else free it is worth an hour of your time. 3 stars. Thank you to goodreads and the publisher for my copy.

This was the perfect start to a chilly Sunday morning, snuggled under the duvet.

It was a lovely heartwarming read and I loved the whole timeslip bicycle ride transporting them back to 1936. I just wish it could have been longer because before I knew it I'd finished.

The characters of Ellie and James were wonderful, their story enjoyable and I found myself absolutely mesmerised by them and their search for James's lost love.

It's the first book I've read by this author and it was a welcome introduction to her work, which I'm looking forward to reading more of.

I won this book through Goodreads. 😀 My opinions are my own and were not influenced by this. This is a charming Ghost story. It's sentimental and well scripted. I just really enjoyed the storyline and vivid descriptions. I could envision New York and loved the details of the past. I found some of the vocabulary interesting too, I had to look up a few words! A terrific tale that is clean and fast paced. It could be enjoyed and recommended to any age.

So disappointed in this novella. The characters were not complex at all and the story was all over the place. Lost love…but wait, now he is a ghost….ok, got passed that. Then all of a sudden we time traveled back to the 1930s via a bicycle….then the ghost becomes alive again. Too much of too much that didn’t make sense.
