His Secret Daughter

Rate this book
Not Noah. Not my husband. But there he is, unconscious in the hospital bed. Our daughter sobs into my shoulder. We love him so much. What if he never wakes up? And who is the little girl beside him, gazing up at us with big, tear-filled brown eyes? Eyes that look just like my husband’s…

Our family of three is perfect. Just me, Noah and our teenage daughter Maya. The day the police knock at our door, telling us about the car accident, is the worst day of my life. My heart shatters, but what they say next almost makes it stop beating: Noah was in the car with another woman who died at the scene. Her two-year-old girl, Luna, miraculously survived.

With Noah fighting for his life, I’m desperate for the truth: and when I search his desk, I find checks made out to Luna’s mother. Did my loving, loyal husband have a secret family all along?

Despite my own terrible pain, at the hospital I can’t help but comfort this poor child as she cries for her mommy. With nowhere else for Luna to go, I find myself opening our home. Seeing Maya hold Luna’s hand and giggle as they chase butterflies in the garden, it’s almost like my daughter has a sister…

I have an impossible choice. Do I tell Maya the truth about her father? If Noah wakes up, will even more secrets come out about who he really is? And can I forgive him enough to give this sweet, innocent girl a home… or will my husband’s betrayal tear us all apart?

I have seen so much about Melissa Weisner, so was gutted to miss the tour, but the lovely Sarah at Bookouture managed to squeeze me in, thanks Sarah!
This is a wonderful read. Strong, powerful characters combined with a gripping and emotional read and I was hooked! Couldn't wait to get back to it, so much tension and drama, but the real strength is in the emotions Weisner manages to convey from her characters. It echoes a lot of Jodi Picoult, and she is my all time favourite author!
The plot is so fast, and she threw in a few twists to keep it interesting, which I love!
I will happily sign up for reading every book by Melissa Weisner now!

Wow, I'm shocked by the entirety of it. When you think you have it all figured out, another twists is thrown at you. The twists start at the beginning and keep coming throughout the story. This truly had me gripped and confused. I was determined to figure it all out. Many of the twists shocked me. I loved the entirety of this. I'm so glad this was recommended to me, my first 5 star read of 2024!

When the police knock on Emma's door, she is unprepared for what she is about to hear. Her husband, Noah, has been in a car accident and is in a coma. The woman who was with him has passed away. But what should be done with the little three-year-old girl, Luna, who survived the accident? Emma is speechless, because she has no idea who the woman is, and her only child with Noah is a teenager, Maya. Is Noah the father of this little girl? Thus begins Emma's journey as she unlocks her husband's past and finds out the secrets he's been keeping.

I enjoyed this story of a man's secret past and how it affects his family. The author does a good job of portraying Emma's emotions as she peels back layer after layer of the life of her husband, who she thought she had known. Flashes back to the past show us how Emma and Noah meet, fell in love, and marry. Emma's struggles as a parent during this tragedy are portrayed in a realistic way. This is a well-crafted story with unexpected pieces that fall perfectly into place. It is at times a heartbreaking read. Fans of women's fiction and "hidden past" stories will enjoy this book.

I received a free copy of this book from Bookouture via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

Set aside time to binge-read! You won’t be able to settle to do anything until you find out the truth behind Emma and Noah Havern’s relationship.

I'm so glad I’ve discovered this author as I’m always able to connect with her stories and am assured of a journey filled with emotions as I become invested in the lives of her masterfully crafted characters.

This is the fourth book of Weisner’s I’ve read and I’ve noted each time how capably she’s able to convey the mood of a story. It’s like I’ve been kidnapped and dropped into the scene; I feel like I’m experiencing the story alongside the characters. I don’t have children, but Weisner was able to put me in Emma’s shoes so that I could feel her desperation and anxiety over wondering how much of her marriage was a lie. I couldn’t go to bed without finding out the truth!

There’s no doubt the author’s career in film school and counselling added to the success of this book. Weisner continues to slowly peel back the layers of her characters, all their troubled pasts, fears and insecurities and shows us the real people beneath. A story is so much more enjoyable when I can empathize with the characters.

I love the approach Weisner brings to storytelling. She writes heartbreaking stories yet focuses on the resilience of people overcoming adversity. Her characters always find themselves in tough situations, buried under a pile of secrets, but they find a way towards light and redemption. It’s amazing how she can write a story that’s so emotionally compelling yet still remains uplifting! Her message about the healing power of love and family will make this a read you’ll remember for quite some time.

Reading this intense, family drama is definitely an experience that will fill you with anticipation, fear, hope, love, and heartache. It’s one of Weisner’s best and it needs to be on your reading list.

I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Such a wild roller coaster of a ride, I had quite a few unexpected things thrown at me as I read.
Heart wrenching and heartwarming both. I was absolutely hooked. This book is unputdownable from the very first page, it absolutely draws you in. You won't be able to stop reading until it's over. I am totally hooked and must read more by this author!
Intense, this is the one you'll be recommending to all of your friends.
Such an unexpected ending. This is perfection and I loved it!

Emma opens her front door to the police to hear that her husband has been in a car accident. When she arrives at the hospital her husband is in a coma.

I enjoyed this book and I will be looking out for more books from this author.

Due to stresses in their marriage, Emma and her husband, Noah recently separated. A few weeks later, Noah is in a devastating car accident, which puts him in a coma. In the car with him were another woman and a two-year-old child. The woman was killed, but the child survived. Emma must now deal with her husbands injuries, as well as what to do about the child, Luna. Emma learns that woman, Coral ,named Noah as the child’s guardian in case of her death.

As Emma digs deeper into Noah’s relationship with Coral and Luna, she realizes that there is a lot about her husband’s past about which she knows nothing. Now she must navigate the new realities of her life along with the responsibility of raising a two-year-old child who isn’t hers.

The story alternates between the present and Emma‘s history with Noah. As you learn more about Noah’s past, some parts of their history begin to make sense.

The story is well told, and frankly not as melodramatic as the blurb portrays. Emma, and her 16 year-old daughter Maya, are very strong characters. As events unfold, Emma finds the strength to do what she has to do to learn the truth about Noah and Luna, and Maya, although only 16, becomes her partner in caring for Luna, along with Emma’s best friend Alicia. There are a lot of surprises in the plot. At one point I thought I had it figured out but new information showed that I was wrong. This story may not have the ending you expect, but it is nonetheless satisfying.

Although Emma is relieved to hear that her husband Noah has survived a devastating car accident, she is devastated to learn that he is in a coma. Furthermore, there was someone else in the car who died at the scene, and there was another survivor besides Noah, a toddler name Luna. Quite naturally, Emma begins to wonder what was going on with her husband Noah. His chances do not look good, and although very concerned for his well-being, Emma wonders who that person was who died in the accident and what Noah’s connection to Luna could be.

Not one to let things sort themselves out, Emma starts digging for answers. This means going through Noah’s past and possessions to try to find out what has been going on with him. It seems for certain that Noah has been keeping secrets and these secrets have a very far reach.

Noah and Emma had an idyllic first meeting and very wonderful relationship that started to fracture at some point. While Noah is unresponsive to stimulus, Emma never stops visiting and also has their daughter Maya visit as well, hoping against hope that Noah will soon wake up. Of course, Emma wants the best for Noah, but she also wants answers.

Emma soon realizes that she must make a very difficult decision, and as hard as that decision will be, she knows it is in the best interest of the little girl Luna. Melissa Wiesner has written a compelling read from start to finish, one that pulls you into the lives of these characters with the “what if” question playing over and over. For a compelling family drama that will keep you turning pages late into the night, look no further than His Secret Daughter.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

3.75⭐️ rounded up to 4.

The police show up at Emma’s house to inform her that her husband has been in a car accident and is in a coma. He was driving with a woman and child that Emma has never met. When she meets the child, she discovers the uncanny resemblance to her husband. She is determined to discover everything that her husband has been lying to her about.

This was a really quick read and kept me really engaged. Emma was a fantastic main character, I felt really attached to her and could feel her pain throughout the whole story. It was well written with short chapters and was quite emotional at times!

I found the story to be quite predictable. Although there were some twists, I figured them out quite early. I also thought the ending was quite sudden.

It was a nice story, it just didn’t wow me!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Very very depressing

I am not going to spoil the book but it is so sad. I can't believe how it ended. The epilogue was upbeat but my heart still hurt for the book. Good writing. Everything but the ending worked for me. I wanted more. I gave it three for the writing but I originally wanted to give it 1. Be prepared to cry.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'His Secret Daughter' by Melissa Wiesner.

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Melissa Wiesner, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 3rd January 2023.

This is the fourth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'Her Family Secret', 'Our Stolen Child' and 'The Girl In The Picture' which I highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its stunning eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper, Kate Hewitt and Diane Chamberlain will adore this absolutely unputdownable read about how the people we love most can hide the darkest secrets.' I am a huge fan of Jodi Picoult, Kate Hewitt and Diane Chamberlain so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Melissa Wiesner and if this is half as good as 'Her Family Secret' and 'The Girl In The Picture' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of 30 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is set in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA 🇺🇸 .

This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonists being Emma Havern. The benefits of third person perspective with are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

'His Secret Daughter' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Melissa discusses/includes drugs and child abuse.

Yet another absolutely gripping book Melissa well done!!! This book is beautifully written with such emotion it will have tears streaming down your eyes. The stunning cover and synopsis suit the plot perfectly.

The storyline is a rollercoaster of emotions including heartbreak, tension, secrets, lies, friendship, family, love and just so so much more. It is hard to explain in words the emotions this book brings out. It is so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. I was absolutely captivated and absorbed throughout, a beautiful page turner. It is genuinely one of those books you just can't put down. It is also extremely thought provoking and most definitely unique! I have never come across a storyline like it in a book before!! I was just absolutely addicted to this gorgeous novel. It is an absolutely sensational family drama with twists and turns I just did not see coming so A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Melissa as it is getting harder and harder to shock me. My jaw just dropped so many times and I was just completely mind blown by everything that just kept coming out of the woodwork the more Emma investigated!! Melissa has such evocative way of writing that it really does bring out all the emotions in her readers. This book is heartwarming and heartbreaking, uplifting and just an absolutely stunning addictive page turner. I absolutely LOVED the ending and I had tears streaming down my face by the end which is very rare for me so well done (I think 🤔) Melissa for making me cry lol 😂). I would absolutely love to see this book created into a movie!!!

Clear your schedules and grab the tissues before even turning the first page of this stunner and get ready for an absolute rollercoaster of emotions!! One of the best books I have ever read and definitely the most thought provoking!!

It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.

The characters were realistic and each had their own unique personalities. This must be the first for a book but my heart went out to each and every one of the characters for different reasons. It absolutely broke for Emma who was going through so much anyway and the pressure, stress, heartbreak and so much more just kept being added and added to her emotional turmoil throughout the book and yet she still kept trying to stay strong for her daughter Maya. Emma is such a strong woman and I was just expecting her to curl up and crawl into bed at any moment which, although she wanted to several times (and who could blame her?) she managed to keep on going, discovering more secrets, looking after her daughter while helping poor Luna. I could not stand her parents who were just horrible and uncaring people especially her father who just disgusted me with his attitude!! I am so pleased that she had Alicia who was a true friend and such an amazing support for not only Emma but also Luna and Maya. She is such a kind and caring person and someone who I would love to have as a friend myself!! Maya is only a child at 16 but has also got so much going on with exams, worrying about her Dad and having her life turned upside down that my heart completely broke for her. Emma was doing everything she could to help but nobody can take away your emotions and my heart broke for the both of them. Throw poor Luna into the mix at just 2/3 years old and not having a clue what is going on and having her life turned upside down too and you have 3 amazing women/girls who have gone through so much between them all. I won't go in to any details about Noah or another character as I don't want to spoil it for future readers but the ending and everything that came out had tears streaming down my eyes. Gary was another character that my heart broke for and I don't believe he deserved what happened to him or how he was treated when he was just trying to feed his family. Argh!! There's so much more I want to say about the characters but any more and I am worried I will give too much away so I will leave it there. However, I will say that this group of characters will stay with me for a long time and if you want to meet them click the buy link below. Well done Melissa on creating such realistic characters and bringing their personalities and emotions to life!!

OMG Melissa!!! When will I learn? Always have a box of tissues at the ready and clear my schedule when I pick up one of your books as they are guaranteed storyline that I will completely lose myself in and end up in tears!!

.This is EXACTLY why you are one of my favourite authors and bring out the same emotions as reading a Jodi Picoult and Nicholas Sparks book brings out in me. They have definitely got competition in you!!

Congratulations Melissa on yet another absolutely stunning, riveting success. This would make an absolutely gorgeous movie and I am looking forward to your next successful novel!!!

Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the first two chapters of Melissa's absolutely stunning 'Our Stolen Child' which is another emotional page turner and one I have read myself and would highly recommend!!

Overall a must read, gorgeous, addictive page turner that will take your breathe away and have you absolutely sucked in with tears streaming down your face!!

Genres covered in this novel include Romance Literary Fiction, Women's Literary Fiction, Romance, Family Drama and Literary Fiction amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Nicholas Sparks, Kerry Fisher, Diane Chamberlain, Jodi Picoult’s 'My Sister’s Keeper', Kate Hewitt, Catherine Ryan Hyde and absolutely anyone who loves an absolutely breathe taking, emotionally charged and addictive page turner!!!

284 pages.

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) and £7.99 in paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

Too predictable. I had pegged who Luna was almost as soon as she was introduced, and her mother, too.
How many times can a person go back and make sure that you caught that Noah's grief was about his parents dying in a fire? How many times can this be hammered in? Every time it happened I rolled my eyes. We get it. The emotion was because they were dead. Except it wasn't and you made that abundantly clear.
Hoopla suggest that if I liked Jodi Picoult novels I'd like this. There was no comparison. It kept me reading though, thinking some how this was all going to have a giant twist and be NOTHING I'd anticipated, but alas it was not.
The only thing that happened that was remotely unexpected was that Noah died in the end. I literally just told a friend yesterday "...it's called "His Secret Daughter," there's no way it's actually about his secret daughter. There'd be no plot twist so obviously this isn't his kid. It's just all so obvious."

I recently started a book club and this was the book we settled on to read as our first book. This isn't my typical genre of book that I read. I typically read happy/spicy romance books because a girl has to live vicariously through her books, am I right? However, I did enjoy His Secret Daughter. The mystery had me turning the pages because I needed to find out the truth about Emma and Noah Havern’s relationship. I think that hit a little too close to home for me... I'm dealing with divorcing a man that I now look at and question was anything he told me the truth. This is a quick and exciting read. Fans of mystery will enjoy this for sure!

His Secret Daughter by Melissa Wiesner is an engrossing page turner that had me on a roller coaster of emotions. It will have you questioning how well you know your loved ones as well as what you would do if you were in the same position as Emma in the story. A family drama full of secrets and lies with some unexpected surprises.

Read In one sitting, His Daughters Secret was an incredible page turner, with incredible and relatable characters.

This book was filled with mystery, with the main character Emma playing a little detective role I couldn’t help but play along with her.

I came to my own conclusion regarding Emma’s husband and it brought me no joy to find that I was right. This was a heart felt and heart breaking novel. Filled with secrets, love, grief and confusion.

This is definitely a must-read for anyone who enjoys a light mystery read with a lot of emotions running high throughout.

His secret daughter by Melissa wiesner
Thank you NetGalley and thank you to the publisher bookouture for the opportunity to read this one early. This book grabbed me from the first page. Who doesn’t love a good family drama, ha unless it’s your own of course.
Emma is married to Noah and they share a 16 year old daughter Maya. Unfortunately there has been trouble in paradise for the couple, Noah has been traveling a lot of work and not willing to scale back at all this causing a rift between Noah and Emma so she asks him to move out. But that isn’t where their troubles began, there is a much more pressing matter at hand who was the little girl in the car with her husband and a unknown woman when she received a visit from local law enforcement to say there was a auto accident. No one knows and Noah is in a coma this can not answer that question or any of Emma’s questions.
Definitely kept me interested, quickly turning the page after page, pulls at your heart strings. Can you find it in your heart to love another woman’s child? Not sure I could. This book also had some twists and turns so you think you have it figured out then boom a bombshell dropped. Great first book of Melissa Weisner s and definitely won’t be the last.

An extremely quick read for me, the story got going right away and caught my attention easily. It reminded me of Regretting you by Colleen Hoover which I also enjoyed. I liked the backstory chapters and it was interesting to see them tie into what happens in the future of the characters. Now I will be honest in saying that I figured out the twist pretty early on that Luna was not Noah’s daughter, but his niece. I don’t know if it’s just because I try to crack the the case asap and I just happened to guess it, or if it was just predictable from the jump? Nonetheless I really enjoyed the book and the ending made me tear up.

I thought this book was incredibly predictable. If I hadn’t been reading it for a book club, I would not have bothered to finish. I did switch from reading to listening just to power through. As a social worker, I was really bothered by the misinformation in this book that came from the social work character.
