"Lori Degman is a teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing by day and a children's book author by night, weekend, and school holiday. She writes in rhyme, most of the time - but not always!
Lori is the award-winning author of: 1 Zany Zoo (Simon & Schuster in 2010) - An Illinois Reads Book Selection; winner of the Cheerios New Author Contest and Mom's Choice Award.
Cock-a-Doodle Oops! (Creston Books, 2014) - International Literacy Association Honor Book and winner of Mom's Choice Award.
TRAVEL GUIDE TO MONSTERS PART DEUX takes you on a trip across the country for an exciting Canadian experience. Instead of sticking to typical human main characters, Lori Degman switches them out with the fun of monsters and it helps to hold a child's attention. Not only does this book teach children about Canada and it's attractions, it also sparks the interest of traveling. It opens their eyes to the fact that a whole world is out there for them to explore. I love the vibrant colors and how each monster looks so different. The reader can tell that the illustrator enjoyed drawing them.
Packed with tips, this book will have the reader wanting to pack up their bags and explore the waters and sights Canada has to offer. I absolutely love the monster theme because it makes this book stand out from others like it and it gave my daughter some giggles. I'm curious to see what country is next in this series.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this to children whose parents enjoy traveling because it'll build up the child's interest in it. It's also perfect for fans of adventure and monsters.
This amusing travel guide for anyone planning a trip across Canada is particularly humorous if readers consider the monsters to be most likely children. Rhyming lines identify various points of interest to be found in the various provinces, including skiing, hockey, cod-fishing, and even a rodeo, plus foods worth tasting, notably, poutine and lobster. Since there's a colorful map at the end of the guidebook, readers will be able to review the provinces visited over the course of reading the book as well as some of those special offerings or what makes each spot unique. Some vacationers might want to use this book as a starting place or introduction for the youngsters in their party since Canada is large, sprawling, and so much more than Toronto or Montreal. Its intended audience will surely find the book more entertaining than most adults.
There is so much to love with this book. The book is such a funny romp across Canada. What a great way to introduce kids to the geography and culture of Canada. Teachers are sure to find it useful in their classrooms to help their students learn about the county north of the United State border.
The quirky monsters and colorful illustrations Marcus created definitely will capture children and adults hearts. Besides Polar Bears, fishing, hockey, and maple syrup, I was happy to see the aurora borealis, the ice sculptures at the Winter Fair, and the rodeos in Alberts mentioned. I love the stickers on the luggage and the map at the end is great. Perfect to children.
Marcus' illustrations are a great addition to Lori and Jocelyn's text. Everyone will enjoy taking this monster trip across Canada.
Blurb: Travel Guide for Monsters, Part Deux, a Canadian Adventure, by Lori Degman, Jocelyn Watkinson, Marcus Cutler, and Sleeping Bear Press, is monster-filled fun. Whether you or your monster want to travel to Canada or just learn about it, this is the book for you! As you navigate the northern territories, you will experience the sights, smells, sports, traditions and topography that make Canada great.
Lynne Marie says: After enjoying a fun trip across the US in the first Travel Guide for Monsters, I looked forward to this next leg of Monster’s journey. Degman and Watkinson roll across Canada with rollicking rhyme that does not disappoint! So much to learn and do and see on this memorable monster holiday! Cutler’s illustrations bring monsters to life in a fun and entertaining way!
More than a Two-Sentence Review: This is more than a two-sentence review due to the authors' note:
"The authors, illustrator, and team behind this book would like to respectfully acknowledge that the land we celebrate with this book takes place on ceded and unceded traditional land of the Indigenous People of Canada and we acknowledge with respect the diverse histories and cultures of all First Nations, Métis, and Inuit People."
One of my friends is Inuit and he said thank you for this.
Back to my review: The rhymes are delightful and perfectly showcase the landscape with such fun rhymes as "Your monster will be dazzled by the beautiful display; aurora borealis--it's a rainbow light ballet!". Vibrant illustrations accompany this winning picture book.
A fun and funny Canadian travel guide for a very distinct demographic--monsters and their owners! Continuing the silliness of her first monster travel guide, Degman is joined by clever Canuck rhymer Jocelyn Watkinson for a monsterly romp across Canada, complete with wildlife (polar bears), sports (skiing and hockey) , sights (Aurora Borealis) and of course delicious food (poutine and maple syrup). Cutler's colorful illustrations will delight kids, offering up a different monster for every province! This Canadian approves!
When traveling with monsters on a trip across the nation, this guide will give you tips to have a marvelous vacation.
What an entertaining and hilarious tour of Canada! I absolutely loved the playful rhyme and the monster tips that were shared as the monsters (and friends) visited the country's major hallmarks. The illustrations were vibrant and adorable. It's a delightful read-aloud! Highly recommend.
A super-duper romping adventure by Lori Degman and Jocelyn Watkinson! Oh, those mischievous monsters...I giggled all the way through! The art is colorful, detailed, and fabulous by Marcus Cutler. Kids and adults alike will want to read this rhyming delight over and over again! I ordered my copy and can't wait to share it with my grandkids. Love it!
Lori Degman and Jocelyn Watkinson created a wonderfully funny and entertaining story that had my kids laughing from beginning to end! The fun rhyming text paired with Marcus Cutler's hilarious illustrations takes readers (and monsters!) skiing through Canadian mountains, gazing at the aurora borealis, and tasting poutine! This book is a must-have!
I LOVE this hilarious travel guide through Canada… with monsters! The rhyme is playful and fun, and the illustrations are bright and cheerful. Not only did my son and I enjoy reading this travel guide together, but we also learned a bit as well! My son wanted to go on Google Maps and check out all the places! I highly recommend it!
Degman & Watkinson have crafted a silly travel guide to Canada that kids are sure to love. Rhyming text is matched with Cutler's colorful illustrations, which feature landmarks and regional activities. This would make a fun addition to an Elementary Homeschool unit for Canada!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I am Canadian and understood all the references. I’m not sure people less familiar with Canada 🇨🇦 would understand. I know the rodeo city is Calgary but would everyone? I would like to see some notes explaining the references in a little more detail.
My 4yo and I enjoyed the sequel in this series. The silly rhyming text with a touch of nonfiction (places in Canada) paired with the bright and humorous illustrations made this an entertaining read. I look forward to seeing where these monsters travel next.
A wonderful picture book by two expert rhymers! I loved this ode to Canada and the gorgeous, colourful illustrations. A perfect gift for any monster-loving Canadian!
I’m so excited to share this book with my nieces, and nephew! It’s fun and factual, and superbly written in rhyme. A playful way to capture the beauty of the great white north.
What a fun introduction to Canadian geography and culture, through the lens of traveling with monsters - silly, fun, and informative! I loved the bright illustrations and rhyming, bouncy text.
Super cute and informational book! The playful rhyming text takes the reader on a fun adventure, learning about Canada along the way. The cute and quirky illustrations match the text perfectly!
I am a sucker for rhyme and Degman & Watkinson nailed it! Cutler's illustrations are bright, colorful, and fun as well. I loved learning about Canada's geography and culture.
