I have always enjoyed reading factual accounts of World War II and was impressed by the format of this particular book. The idea of taking us through all of the events on all of the fronts as they actually occurred is brilliant. Even those who lived through these perilous times could not experience it in this way, given the lag between when things happened and when they were reported. Also the difficulties associated with reporting to the entire world events happening simultaneously around the world were in surmountable in the 1940s. The author doesn't pretend to offer a cohesive narrative through these snapshots in time, but ends up providing perspectives impossible in the best cohesive narratives of the period. As I read this, I imagined experiencing this vast tapestry as it occurred in real time and realized that, even with today's twenty-four hour news cycles and a plethora of different networks with reporters around the world, today's events cannot be captured as comprehensively as Mr. Shaw captured those of seventy-five to eighty years ago. Without knowing in advance what will turn out to be important, it is impossible to give appropriate attention to all of the events that intertwine to produce the gestalt of a major world event. Decades ago Will Durant recognized the importance of what he called "integrated history." Mr. Shaw takes this a step further by incorporating temporal coincidence as well.
In light of the great old movies and the bevy of PC games I play on the subject, I consider myself a World War II buff. This remarkable book reads like an objective diary of each day in the five year span of the world's greatest conflict. Filled with photographs, many I've not seen before, this book would make a fine addition as a reference book for anybody interested in world history.
This book does an excellent job of compiling photographs to supplement the equally outstanding concision of the descriptions chronicling the daily events, battles, and politics on all fronts during the Second World War. Side boxes elaborate on key figures and aspects throughout the conflict. This book has an overview at the beginning and an introduction to each year of the war. Even though it is written in snapshots, a narrative punch can be found in following the war from day to day. It is a great resource for research and an instant mainstay for a home library collection.
The author gives a concise and essential history of the Second World War. This overview with many photos and captions, many graphic gave me a good understanding from beginning to end of the conflict on all fronts. It was an excellent read.
