Valkyries tells the story of a teenage girl in the '70s who commits herself to Jesus at a tent meeting and is then immediately plunged into her family's traumatic breakup, which results in violent abuse from her father and neglect from her mother. Finally sent away to a Catholic boarding school for girls, Tracey recognizes some hard truths about her own anger and her inability to possess inner goodness - in spite of being a Christian. She also discovers, in the course of things, an unexpected talent for basketball. Some Through the Fire follows Tracey's story from her commitment to Christ to her exile at a Catholic boarding school. About the title: The Valkyrie, a female warrior from Norse mythology, is the basketball team's mascot - but this mythological figure takes on much deeper significance for Tracey as she struggles for spiritual victory.

This was unlike any other Christian novel I've read previously...and I've read tons! Seriously, it's a bit long--nearly five hundred pages, though the print is slightly large--but, like a good movie or miniseries, it drew me in and kept me interested throughout. Can't wait to read the sequel!
Jeri Massi's ability to write a story of one girl's search for the God Who loves her is incredible. Hard hitting, convicting, and realistic to the greatest degree, this book blew me away.
It is a good book, but for me, besides the lessons that you get from it, the story itself seemed rather blanc than intriguing. Some of the pages made me want to read more some didn't. It is suited for young Christians, shows a story that many people can experience, and presents some of the challenges a young Christian has to defeat. I will give a try to the second book. It is an easy read, especially if you aren't a native speaker. "Maddie had said that at every moment of people's lives, God was calling them to Himself. Every word they said, every thought they conceived, revealed their replies to Him: from hearts that believed and from hearts that did not believe." ( this is a quote that got my attention).
I really loved this series of two books! A girl who's family is Catholic gets saved. Her parents send her off to a Catholic boarding school, and she has to cope not only with the religious antagonism but just plain bullies as well. A really good read!

This book (and its sequel) are quite unlike any Christian fiction I've ever read. You can't help but cheer on Tracey and feel emotionally connected to the story. The only reason this doesn't get 5 stars is because of all the Catholic bashing.
