This book tells the story of Kate who turns into a companion for the daughter of a Marques, basically.
Until the problems begin.
Let's enumerate those problems:
-First, I was deeply irritated by the way our main male character point out several times how his daughter was not pretty enough,especially in comparison to our main female character.
-Second,the fact that the main male character is a complete asshole.
-Third, the way the daughter of our main male character has been described as a total idiot,futile and naive just because she is young.
Anyway I could not finish this book he deeply irritated me and I do not recommend it to anyone.

Este romance acontece no século XIX, no ano de 1870, em Londres. Trata-se de uma época de rígidos costumes e com grande enfoque nas aparências materiais. Uma obra com muitos momentos de humor e paixão, sendo as personagens muito divertidas e carismáticas. A narrativa apresenta-se muito fluída e apaixonada e é uma óptima opção para os leitores mais românticos ou para alternar com leituras mais pesadas e introspectivas.

Apôs reler o livro fiquei com a sensação que fiquei a dois anos atrás , de vazio. Achei a história muito deliciosa e continuo a achar . Recomendo esta autora

E com isto desisto da Cabot. Outra personagem estavanada, absurda, ridícula, nem um pouco credível. Diálogos vazios, entre estúpidos. Na página 33 já me apetece começar a pular páginas. E sim, eu tenho sentido de humor, não vale a pena dizerem que é um romance ‘leve’. É um romance ‘mau’, até certo ponto, o que é diferente. Pelo menos é bem mau em quase toda a primeira metade. A segunda metade, contudo, foi muito mais satisfatória. Pareceu-me que só aí a autora aqueceu. Só aí a Kate deixou de ser uma idiota alvoraçada. Infantil, teimosa, mas definida como “madura”. Não consigo rir-me dos momentos forçados da primeira parte, e eu estou sempre pronta a rir. Muito do que senti quanto ao livro anterior cá publicado repete-se. A personagem feminina vira de uma coisa que é suposto ser espontânea e temerária no início, para uma boneca frágil, vulnerável e mentalmente incapaz de tomar decisões. Há apartes mais do que desnecessárias. Do género, no breve momento em que um pé escorrega num degrau, pensa-se: .
De contexto histórico pouco vi. Não fossem carruagens, vestidos onde as mulheres tropeçam, palacetes e uma (não tão invulgar) aparição de Gretna Green e estalagens onde só há um quarto disponível em dia de chuva, poderia ser algo contemporâneo.
Também me aborrece tanto tell. Aquele típico momento em que outra personagem só existe para listar a história toda de idiotices apaixonadas que a) fez por b). sim, claro que gostas dela! olha no dia 4 tomaste o pequeno-almoço uma hora mais cedo do que o habitual, só porque é a hora em que ela também toma. e no dia 10 apertaste a gravata virado para a janela, porque é a hora em que ela passeia, claro que a amas!. Por muito lugar-comum que sejam livrinhos históricos sobre duas pessoas apaixonadas que já sabemos que ficarão juntas no fim, alguns cumprem o intento de me animar e outros não...
Desmotiva-me porque não me estima nem 1% intelectualmente. Houve ali umas revelações e alguma profundidade lá para o fim, se todo o livro fosse nesse nível não o teria lido na diagonal a partir da pág. 33.
Aborrecem-me os clichés sobre o “estava de camisola de noite e nem tinha reparado se não fosse ele a olhar-me para as mamas” ou “oops vou escorregar do escadote ele está mesmo aqui para me agarrar”.
Uma vez mais é a personagem masculina que salva um livro da ruína. Este Burke (detesto o nome) sempre tem mais profundidade do que a Kate da primeira parte do livro. É uma personagem que confere algum realismo ao livro, o suficiente para que eu pare de pensar que é tudo um circo com pessoas a chamarem-se nomes de animais “toupeiras”, “ursos”, etc.
Detestei a Kate – cópia da Pegeen (Rosa Selvagem). Detesta a classe alta, faz-se de difícil, é pouco sentada e no entanto, descrita como um modelo de razoabilidade e sensatez. Os ideais dela mudam do dia para a noite e o joguinho idiota com o Burke fez-me pensar que, se ela existisse de facto, ele devia era fugir.
Também não suporto falhas de comunicação em livros. Absurdo! E nem a história do “acordei agora na cama dele e não me lembro do que aconteceu esta noite. Oops dormi com ele!”.
Enfim… espero que divirta outras leitoras, eu achei um circo. Rio-me muito com a Julia Quinn, mas não com esta Cabot.

Eu adoro Patricia Cabot!
Suas histórias são fofas, sensuais e puro amor!
Kate Mayhew é uma mulher de 23 anos, que depois de desfrutar uma vida privilegiada, se torna uma simples dama de companhia! Ela precisa trabalhar para se sustentar, e tem o pé firme no chão, e não quer mais saber de fazer parte da aristocracia, que só trouxe desgraça e vergonha para ela.
O marquês de Wingate, Burke, já é marcado pela nobreza por ter se divorciado de sua esposa, por que a pegou com um amante. Ele sofre pelo preconceito da aristocracia, mas tem que sujeitar a ela para arranjar um marido descente para sua filha Isabel. Acontece que a menina é difícil! Putz, que menina chata! Mimada, mal educada, uma hora doce e outras um cão! Ela precisa de uma dama de companhia que a possa ensinar como se portar, para com a sociedade e na frente de seus pretendentes!
Kate é a mulher para o cargo, mesmo jurado nunca mais pisar nos salões de baile, ela se vê como dama de companhia para Lady Isabel.
A conexão de Kate e o marquês é explosiva. Eles se gostam e se distancia o máximo que podem, até ser impossível se manterem separados.
Eu gosto muito como a Patricia cabot escreve, e sempre em seus livros tem vilões de tirar o chapéu!

Mais uma delícia de livro que li num instante.
Adorei a Kate e o Burke.
E aquela 2ª parte fez-me estar a ler até às 2h da manhã só para saber como se iria desenrolar o nó de mal entendidos e ofensas bem intencionadas.
Mas sinceramente estou a pensar em enviar um mail à editora para lhes comunicar o choque que tive quando li a página 210.
Então não é que a tradutora traduziu (desculpem a redundância) o facto de o marquês devorar a rapariga no ato de fazer amor como "VIOLAR"??????
Ainda li duas ou três vezes para ver se eu é que estava a ler bem.
E houve revisão desta tradução! E isto escapou?!
Mas agora já se entende violação como algo normal numa relação?
A tradutora não devia estar boa da cabeça.
E não acredito que tenha sido isto que a autora pretendia dizer. A mesma autora que escreveu Os Diários da Princesa!

Burke tinha 37 anos, era viúvo, extremamente rico e, apesar de não ser considerado de um beleza de revirar os olhos, tinha consciência que seu físico e altura chamavam atenção. Toda essa mistura facilitava e muito quando queria arrumar uma nova amante.
E na verdade ele teria uma com quem se encontrar esta noite, a atriz não tão talentosa assim, Sara Woodhart.
Entretanto, ele não poderia fazer isso porque pela quinta vez nas últimas semanas, a dama de companhia de sua filha rebelde e voluntariosa de 17 anos, Isabel, tinha se demitido. Motivo: a filha dele era impossível.
Isso significava que ele mesmo teria de levá-la ao baile. Claro que seria bem mais fácil se Isabel facilitasse, mas lá estava ele, na frente de sua casa, tentando enfiar uma adolescente escandalosa dentro de uma carruagem.
Uma jovem na idade dela não deveria estar exultante em ir ao baile em sua primeira temporada?
Ah, claro! Não era a ESTE baile que ela queria ir porque lá não estaria o desprezível e endividado jovem Geoffrey Saunders.

A trama tem um quê de mistério.

October 21, 2022DNF: I don’t see this book getting better. If you want to read an amazing Patricia Cabot Historical Romance I recommend Educating Caroline. I have one good memory about this book and it’s not even FROM the book, it’s just associated with it.
Basically Burke sucks, he’s hot tempered (not in a hot way), is rude to his daughter, possessive (once again not in any way remotely hot), and just downright disrespectful.

Gostei realmente deste romance histórico! Gostei imenso do Marquês, e adorei a revelação que ele fez no final, porque embora não precisasse de gostar mais dele do que já gostava, essa última revelação fez toda a diferença :)
Adorei Kate, que passou por tanto e mesmo assim nunca perdeu a coragem, a teimosia e a honra. Uma personagem principal sempre correcta, sempre honesta, mas que não negava a si mesma aquilo que na verdade sentia, como muitas vezes tentam fazer, em nome de uma qualquer forma de estar na vida e na sociedade que foge à minha compreensão.
Gostei de Isabel, do início para o fim conseguimos perceber que cresceu e amadureceu, também devido em parte à dor que sentiu, que, na adolescência, é sempre a pior dor do mundo!
Fiquei triste em parte por ter sido preciso Daniel intervir para que o Marquês fosse finalmente atrás de Kate, mas não se pode ter tudo, não é?
Achei a história bem fundamentada, o enredo é plausível e sem dúvida que o facto de Daniel ter voltado a Londres ao fim de tanto tempo foi uma boa reviravolta, e perfeitamente justificada. Tenho que referir Lady Babbie, especialmente pelos momentos engraçados que permitiu que acontecessem, por ser atrevida e curiosa :p
Contudo, e parece ser sempre esta a minha luta, porquê o fim apressado? Não podíamos ter mais umas páginas, em que não se andasse quase um ano para a frente? Porque não contar-nos mais? Porque não sabermos melhor como reagiu a alta sociedade de Londres ao regresso deles? Não entendo esta mania de explicarem tudo muito bem e depois apressarem o fim! Sim, fez todo o sentido a forma como o livro terminou, mas porquê assim? Porque não explicar tudo um pouco melhor? Nestes casos, embora para bom entendedor meia palavra baste, por favor, merecíamos um fim melhor elaborado!
Embora tenha ficado triste com o final apressado, não me desiludiu o final em si. Não me surpreendeu também, foi o final esperado, e merecido pelas personagens de que tanto gostei :)

Meg enveredou por outro tipo de histórias, mas espero que um dia considere voltar aos romances históricos, porque são maravilhosos :)

Meg enveredou por outro tipo de histórias, mas espero que um dia considere voltar aos romances históricos, porque são maravilhosos :)

Having read and enjoyed Meg’s historical romance Ransom My Heart a couple of years ago (http://www.hannahfielding.net/?p=1285) and enjoyed it immensely, I was intrigued to try one of the newly presented Patricia Cabot titles. Meg wrote these early on in her career, and I wondered whether I would see a difference in her writing.But I was delighted to find that her voice and style are intact and as engaging as ever.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It’s full of action and twists and turns, and feels entirely plausible and realistic for the historical setting. The mystery had me gripped, and the author expertly drip-feeds information through the story so that you learn slowly the nature of the scandal that haunts Kate, and the truth behind the night that changed her life forever. I do love a book with a villain in it, and this one certainly delivers that!
Kate makes a wonderful heroine: feisty and strong-willed but endearingly vulnerable and inexperienced too. And Burke is man I couldn’t help but fall for. He reminds me of my own alpha male characters – powerful, handsome and masterful, but tortured by misdeeds and misunderstandings of the past. I especially loved him in his role as father; his attempts to control his headstrong daughter are quite comical at times. But most of all it is in the role of lover that he shines. Bright enough to blind the reader, at times!
This is a witty, exciting book to read, but it is the romance that really sets it apart. I’d give it a ten out of ten on the heat scale. At a certain point I wondered whether the story could possibly progress, so engrossed were Kate and Burke in discovering each other. The love scenes are beautifully written and very passionate.
The ending is wholly satisfying, exactly what you hoped for but couldn’t quite expect, so difficult are the circumstances in which the characters find themselves at the end. I was left smiling, but with that twinge of sadness deep down that the story had ended: a sure sign of a good book.
The Patricia Cabot novels are out now in ebook format, and I shall certainly be downloading the others to read now. I greatly admire Meg’s current works in the romance genre – paranormal and contemporary romance for adults and teenagers – but having read this novel I have to say that I wish she would dust her Patricia pen off and write more historical romances. I, for one, would read every one!

Este foi um livro que me deixou muito satisfeita. Depois de ter lançado o livro “Rosa Selvagem” pela Livros D’Hoje, este ano Patricia Cabot veio dar o ar de sua graça com o livro “Um Pequeno Escândalo”, desta vez pela Quinta Essência.
Estava à espera de algo semelhante, um livro que iria manter-se com a mesma orientação do anterior, nunca pensei que a autora se viesse a revelar tão capaz de melhorar o seu trabalho. Este é, na minha opinião, um livro fantástico e Patricia Cabot veio mais uma vez afirmar o seu talento perante os seus leitores e, acredito mesmo que a única comparação que se pode fazer com “Rosa Selvagem” é que são ambos romances de época.
Achei a historia muito divertida, principalmente pela forma como Kate não se mostrava submissa perante o seu patrão e também pela forma como este se desculpava quando acompanhava a filha e a sua empregada aos bailes da Sociedade Londrina, muitas foram as vezes que este se viu em situações incómodas devido ao facto de ter ciúmes quando Freddy ou qualquer outro homem se chegava a Kate. Gostei também da forma como ambos acabaram por se envolver, achei que não foi uma cena forçada e apesar da forma sensual como tudo se passou, tudo foi descrito de maneira a dar a ideia de algo normal. Claro que depois vieram os problemas… enfim, acho que Burke aqui pecou pela forma como agiu perante aquela situação, apesar de magoado devido a acontecimentos passados, devia ter lutado mais ou então agido mais cedo.
Este foi um livro que apesar dos inúmeros momentos românticos, teve também bastante mistério, algo que acabou por melhorar bastante todo o enredo. Foi lido em poucas horas e no final ficou a vontade de querer ler mais… E aquele final…Não quero revelar nada, mas foi tão divertido de ler!!!

I was very excited to read this one as I especially enjoyed the combination of Humor and Romance in Patricia Cabot's Educating Caroline and wanted more of the same. This book though did not fulfill my craving and I found it lacking.
Starting with the cover, as per the book h (Kate) is a blonde and nothing like the girl on the cover.
The first 40% just dragged by and I was unable to connect to any of the characters or feel very interested in their thoughts and feelings. The banter between the H and h felt forced and fake...
After that the book picked up pace and I felt finally we will get somewhere. But after 70%, the story again started dragging on.
At the end I was not sure of H's (Burke) love for Katie
Isabella, Burke's daughter is a brat and I did not like her behavior (she was 17 not 10)
I still give it 2 stars as this was an OK read.

This was a light, sexy, and humorous read. There's only a few writers of historical romance that I like, and Meg Cabot is one of them. Even though she hasn't written historical romances for a long time, I've enjoyed reading her early ones. Lady of Skye is probably my favorite Patricia/Meg Cabot historical romance thus far, but I do still have a couple left to read.
Anyway, the plot of this particular novel felt reminiscent of Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice at times. The ending also felt rather rushed and everything was resolved a little too neatly. I still enjoyed it, though. There was great chemistry between Kate Mayhew and Burke Wingate. I also think "Lady Babbie" (the name of Kate's pet) is an adorable name for a cat.

um rating de 3* mesmo em cima da linha....
o tema até que tinha pano para mangas.... mas a historia ficou tão mas tão simples, que fiquei com as minhas expectativas goradas.
estava a prever uma protagonista cheia de atitude e afinal saiu uma "sonsa" que quer ter "ares" mas não se consegue impor nem criar ambiente emotivo.
o protagonista masculino, saiu um belo dum "irritante" que é do género "eu quero, posso e mando" mas que acaba por nem ter mão (como se costuma dizer) sobre a filha adolescente!
.... esperava bem mais da historia e fica uma certa desilusão.
nota: não sei se deveria mencionar.... mas a tradução (prt do brasil) talvez tenha sido uma condicionante para esta opinião, no meu entender, uma tradução bem feita é quase tão importante como escrever a historia... todas as emoções e os sentimentos dos personagens devem transparecer nos diálogos o que nem sempre acontece numa tradução feita "a pressa". :(

At first, I really enjoyed this book. The heroin was smart and charming and there was something about the hero that made him both cute and alpha-male-y.
Yet, at the middle, something got wrong. I'm not sure what exactly, apart from the fact the hero went from believing the heroin was seing another guy behind his back to fucking her on his desk in two seconds chrono and she was ok with it... then wasn't ok anymore, not because he totally didn't respected her - which was clearly the case - but because he decided she would of course become his mistress. After that, I didn't like them so much anymore and kind of lost interest in the story altogether.
I stuck to the end of the book because I wanted to see how it would wrap up but I wasn't convinced.
I think Meg Cabot should stick to romcom and YA, that's what she writes best.

Das war Mal wieder ein Buch ganz nach meinem Geschmack, anders kann ich es nicht sagen. Typisch historisches Liebesschätzchen. Kriegen Sie sich oder nicht, dass war hier die Frage und ich finde Sie war auch berechtigt. Das Kate sehr vorsichtig ist, dass kann man ja verstehen, auch das der Wingate etwas vorsichtiger ist. Denn schließlich haben beide ein trauriges und zugleich auch schlimmes Schicksal hinter sich gelassen, aber sind beide auch bereit über ihre Schatten zu springen und daraus dann mehr zu machen?
Ich fand die Geschichte absolut lesenswert, klar muss man sowas mögen, aber ansonsten muss ich sagen hat es mir dennoch sehr gut gefallen.

Essa é a história de um Marquês (Burke) que se apaixona pela dama de companhia da filha (Kate). No início é legal, dá vontade de continuar lendo, mas depois dos 20% eu queria jogar o Kindle pela janela. Cheguei na metade e nada acontecia, o Burke mal falava com a Kate pois a atração que sentia por ela era muito forte, então ele a evitava. Tá.
Daí passou 5% e DO NADA eles se encontram, já transam alucinadamente e a Kate nem parece ser virgem! Eu gosto quando a personagem não é santinha, mas aqui foi nada convincente, pois até então ela nunca tinha SE tocado ou coisa parecida, era totalmente santa, daí se pegou PELA PRIMEIRA VEZ com o cara e já foi agarrando o pinto? Ah, senta lá.
Fora o fato do Burke o tempo todo jogar tudo e todos pela janela, coisa que senti que foi pra dar alívio cômico, mas ficou patético. Revirei tanto os olhos nessas cenas que temi ficar cega.
Ah e detalhe: eles se apaixonam sem ter conversado direito ou se conhecido. Insta-love total e confesso que gosto disso em algumas histórias, porém aqui o negócio foi mal construído demais. Não colou.
Só não diminuo a nota porque as cenas hot foram boas, como é de praxe nos romances da Patricia Cabot (graças a deus).

📚#4 in My Meg Cabot Read Through
Meg Cabot's fourth novel A Little Scandal took me some time to finish. In part, because I put it on hold to finish up some other books before December ended. However, after reading those books, I didn't feel particularly compelled to finish up A Little Scandal. Compared to Meg's first three books as Patricia Cabot, I felt that this one was the least interesting. I think this had mostly to do with the one-note male love interest. But... first things first.
The book is set in 1870 London. Kate Mayhew is a twenty-three-year-old governess, whom the tempestuous Marquis Burke Traherne hires to chaperone his somewhat wayward daughter Isabel. [Burke is thirty-six-years-old btw. Another older man lol.] Kate and Burke basically fall for each other at the same time, though they mistake the feelings for lust [ofc]. As a couple, I'm kind of neutral on them which I will explain why in a bit. As for Isabel, I can't help but dislike her. I don't know how anyone could deal with her.
I will discuss what I think the book does right first. It has a good mystery to it, which Meg has done in the previous books, but I really liked how she wrote it here. Basically, Kate's past is slowly told to us over the first half of the book. Burke doesn't learn until near the end of the book . Even after the mystery is revealed, there's a good sense of foreboding. Kate as the heroine I liked. My only complaint is that she's sometimes too stubborn, which includes her tug-of-war about whether she'll marry Burke or not.
Addressing the elephant in the room, I'm looking at you Burke. Another typical "rake" stereotype, of course. However, this time it's extremely violent man. [Keep in mind that he's not particularly violent towards Kate.] His backstory is reasonable enough to justify his behavior to a point. For me, his violence and possessiveness is just a complete turn-off. Though I might've got over this, if he went through some character development. Yes, he learns to love again but he ends the novel just as violent and possessive. I will say that this is probably just a preference thing, because it's not like he's some toxic man. I personally wasn't completely a fan of him.
Another note, while the sex scenes were very sexy and smoldering, it was too much at times. Burke's all over Kate in the last fifty pages.
Okay, A Little Scandal was not my favorite but I can still say I liked it. The first half of the book was very good and I really liked Kate's and Burke's "meet cute." It's just that the pay-out wasn't fully there, because I was never 100% liking Burke. Lady of Skye is up next!

Comecei Um Amor Escandaloso achando que ia adorar. O começo realmente me prendeu, com uma protagonista forte e uma ambientação envolvente. Mas, com o passar da leitura, fui me desconectando da história.
Uma coisa que começou a me incomodar foi a repetição do comportamento da Kate em relação ao Burke. Ela o rejeita constantemente, diz que não quer nada com ele… mas logo em seguida os dois estão juntos de novo, sempre do mesmo jeito. Essa dinâmica acabou ficando cansativa pra mim, até mesmo as partes mais picantes.
No geral, é um livro que começou com potencial, mas foi perdendo o ritmo e se tornou previsível. Faltou um pouco mais de profundidade na relação dos dois, e isso me deixou um pouco frustrada com o final.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I enjoyed it a great deal. In these days of the Covid-19 pandemic it was a cheering book, with a very appealing heroine, not to mention the greatly misunderstood hero. I will be looking out for other books by this author - a fun read.

Really started off strong until the main character was racist towards Arabs like wtf is that about

The romance was sweet but after having read a few of this author's period pieces I am getting a bit tired of her describing orgasms as flying and this one had some really unnecessary and ignorant colonial jokes littered throughout.
