Dragon Estate #2

Dragon Estate 2

Rate this book
Xavier's new life at the estate has begun.

His disease is gone, there's more money in his bank than there are cells in his body, and he might even be falling in love. Inspired, Xavier begins to search for answers. Can the Corruption be vanquished? Could the world of Meadow Song be restored?

All the while, the dragonesses are starting to develop their own feelings for Xavier... feelings far deeper than friendship.

An okay series but not my cup of tea

I tried after my problems with the first book to keep going and give the story a shake but.. it just can't hold me.

Any sense of accomplishment feels flat because I just can't feel like there's much conflict to resolve. Evil badness encroaching, but just doesn't feel like an issue.

Even MC's "wound" from the last book feels more like an excuse asking with the broken shower to prevent hitting that foursome too early. Just like his "horrible disease" it clears up with little to do to accomplish this.

Grammatical issues still plahie this one as well as the last, but finally the fact there's no set perspective at any given point just grates.

You'd think it's from Xavier's perspective, but then it's not "She looks at me" but instead "she looks at him." It's this floating non-perspective out feels because of that.

The smut was decent, not the best nor worse. There's at least an attempt at plot and to tease out and delay the smut for other interaction, but overall it doesn't grab me.

If you loved the first book you'll probably think this one is great, but some authors must don't mesh with some readers, and this is the case.

As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.

“Dragon Estate 2” is a very enjoyable, slice-of-life book with great comradeship among the characters. The narration was also enjoyable, especially Renée Nolen’s performances with the female characters.

In book 2, Xavier has adapted to his new life, and the dragonesses are happy that Xavier likes to spend time with them, and not just be a recluse in his room, as other members of his family have done. Spending time with Xavier becomes something of a friendly competition, with each of the girls trying to top each other on what they can do first with Xavier!

While Xavier discovers he has the ability to scry (read ancient texts), and find the locations for the much needed shards of power, most of this book is about the growing bonds between the main characters. The dragon goddess Amora guides Xavier in his dreams, and it’s not until the end of the book that he remembers her and realizes what tasks he must accomplish in Book 3 to reclaim the estate from the corruption and monsters threatening everything.

3.5 stars. Really, simply not enough actually happened. The one possible bit of action lacked actual action, and it didn't really lead to anything either.

Perhaps the author is pacing the story, but for that to happen there has to be some pace involved. We'll see if I read the next one, as it took me a while to get through this one as I kept getting distracted by other more interesting books. Under normal circumstances it doesn't take me 4 days to get through a book this length.

The fact that goodreads picked it as the book I was "currently reading" did more to push me to finish it than anything else. I should probably turn that feature off in case it picks some real dog of a book that I rapidly give up on.

Overall I'm enjoying this series, but I'm not a huge fan of the writing style. It reminds me of writing essays in high school where you're trying to use as many words as possible to say everything so you can meet the word limit. The author uses a lot of words to say even the most inconsequential things. The result is that not a lot actually happens in the book, which is unfortunate given that it's not very long in the first place. That said, the characters and setting continue to be interesting and I'll be picking up the next one when it's released.

I listened to the Audiobook. It's not bad but the text doesn't sound like people actually talk. The sentences are phrased weird and there aren't enough contractions. Which doesn't seem important until you hear it.

Also the delivery of the dialogue is very flat. The text describes how the person sound how they say what they are saying, but when the character dialogue is read, it is nearly monotone, especially Hailey's lines.

There is also the issue of it feeling like a bunch of stereotypes and tropes mashed together.

Enjoyable Book

I read the first book Dragon Estate and now the second. I enjoyed both books and now can’t wait for the third. Lara has given us a great story and continues to flesh out their characters. I fully endorse these two books and would highly recommend them.
