Strange Unearthly Things

A hauntingly romantic paranormal Jane Eyre reimagining, by the author of Phantom Heart!

Eighteen-year-old Jane Reye is a psychic artist. She draws what she sees, and what she sees are spirits and the supernatural. Growing up orphaned, she's now of legal age and can no longer return to the girls' school she's called home for most of her life. Lost and alone after the death of her lifelong friend, she receives an invitation to partake in a study at the English manor Fairfax Hall: an investigation of the property that requires her specific area of expertise. Upon arrival, Jane understands this will be no ordinary study when she meets Elias Thornfield, the elusive proprietor of the estate, a boy her age, roguishly handsome, who dons a mysterious eye patch. During the study it becomes clear that something is amiss--something having to do with Elias and the spiritual activity taking place around the manor. Turning to her art to unravel the mystery, Jane is shocked to find that her talents--and her growing affection for Elias--could be the key to saving him from a horrible fate.

4.5/5 stars, this book utterly consumed me

Thank you to Penguin Young Readers Group & Viking Books for the arc through netgalley in exchange for an honest review!

One of my favorite classics ever is Jane Eyre, so when I saw that this was a retelling of that story but with themes of gothic horror I knew that I was probably going to love this book. Luckily I was exactly right, sometimes classics are hit or miss in retellings for me but this was amazing. Everything about the story worked perfectly in tandem with one another, and this was definitely a story I won't forget about for a while.

The plotline for this story, while partially easy to follow due to it being a retelling, was still so much fun and definitely kept me engaged. I think the thing that still made it feel new was the dip into heavy gothic horror, instead of just gothic vibes. The horror was much more involved with the characters and also genuinely kind of scary. That's how I love my horror though, I don't just want a little bit, I want it to creep me out. I was very happy that this story fully committed to this, as it made the overall plotline all the more interesting.

Something else that I thought was a really great addition was the psychic powers that the main characters had. This was part of the reason they were called to the house, to try to help the owner with their powers, and it was something else that made the story feel unique. It also reminded me a lot of my favorite horror franchise, The Conjuring, and made me fall in love with the story even more.

I also really loved the main cast, of Jane, Ingrid, Giovanni as well as Elias. I think having them all together made the story flow smoothly. Jane herself is the main character, and obviously a retelling or reflection of Jane Eyre. I think she embodied the original character quite well while adapting to the new story that she was in. Ingrid and Giovanni were there to help with the ghost situation as well, and their personalities meshed well with the story to create a fun cast. Elias was the man who gathered them all there, and he also definitely reminded me of Mr. Rochester, he was the perfect mysterious main love interest.

The romance between Jane and Elias was also very well done and I loved it. It was sort of like mild enemies to lovers which is one of my favorite tropes, and with everything happening in the story I think that it was also well done in terms of pace. I really enjoyed how it all happened.

Overall, this story was really unique despite being a retelling and also being reflective of Jane Eyre. I loved all aspects of this story but especially how the horror felt truly scary, and the romance was very well done as well. The plot twists in this story were very well done and overall this was just an amazing story, I'm so thankful that I was able to read this.

Your YA book is supposed to be written -for- teens, not feel like it was written -by- one

Imagine my disappointment as I pick up a highly anticipated YA and it feels like the writing is trying to replicate teen-talk in the most cringe worthy way

A devastatingly haunting love story that reverberates through the ages.

Jane's a psychic who has been hired - along with two other companions with gifts - to rid Fairfax Hall of an unwanted presence. But Jane isn't there long before she begins to suspect that it's the owner, Elias Thornfield, who's haunted, not the manor itself. The secrets Elias is keeping threaten to undo them all.

I love the energy of the group of friends who form, even though they don't get off to the best start. Giovanni's an unrelenting flirt built like a Greek god with a gift for seeing glimpses of the lives of people he touches. Ingrid's a purple-haired punk tarot card reader who can see glimpses of possible futures during readings. Together with Jane and a mysterious housekeeper, Mr. Poole, they form caring band. Even better, their interactions at times are hilarious. I love how the author juxtaposed the modern slang of the teens against the 18th century speech of Elias.

Jane finds herself drawn to Elias for reasons she can't quite explain, even though she keeps calling him a dumpster fire. Their connection carried the story as literal demons try to rip them apart.

This book left me teary and gave me a book hangover, in the best way. I didn't want to leave Jane's world behind!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you Penguin Teen for sending me an arc for review.

I’m sad to say that this book fell very flat for me. It felt rushed, with stereotypical characters and the romance felt very forced. I didn’t connect or like any of the characters but I did enjoy the spooky house vibes the book gave me.

Overall, I’m disappointed because Kelly is one of my favorite authors 😭 I wanted to like it more

WHAT??????????????? I’m so angry right now. I was so into this book and the ending ?????? Are we for real right now? I’m PISSED! The story captivated me and then THIS? This makes me incredibly hesitant to read any other books by this author.

This is definitely giving King of Battle and blood vibes … IYKYK

**This book isn’t a HEA🥲** could be debatable, but it really wasn’t for me**

If I had known this, I would have never read it. It was definitely pretty Gen Z writing and it did have some really great, but really annoying characters. I felt like I was just cut off from the rest of the story? Like it had been rushed? I loved the banter, sometimes it was like a teen romcom made in 2023. It was literally so good until the end?

And I might be missing a few screws but could not for the life of me understand the importance of Helen. How and why was she involved? I just thought she would text back or SOMETHING? ANYTHING? you don’t really learn anything about her other than she was sick. We don’t really know Jane’s life either. Same with everyone else except Elias. So much potential , I don’t understand how that was 350 pages.

Elias = young Henry Cavill

The cover? ✅
The tropes? ✅
The dark academia YA style of ‘Gothikana’ ?✅
Did I spend 4 hours reading this to feel incredibly disappointed?✅
Was i also confused half of the storyline still struggling to understand the connections?✅

That’s all I have to say

1.5 ⭐

Taki potencjał, a takie okropne wykonanie...

Powiem to: ta książka byłaby 100 razy lepsza, gdyby wyrzucić z niej wątek romantyczny.

Jestem naprawdę rozrzutna dając 2 gwiazdki, bo CO TO KURWA BYLO XDD

PRZYSIĘGAM ŻE GŁOWA MNIE BOLI OD WYWRACANIA OCZAMI NA KAŻDE "tuszę" czy "zaiste" , no autorka to się zesrala konkretnie z tymi archaizmami, I GOT IT, HE'S AN OLD SOUL.

No ileż można. Zabijcie mnie.

Początkowo lubiłam go bardziej, potem zrobiono z niego takiego infantylnego idiotę, jednak wciąż: bez niego to bym nie dała chyba szansy temu.

Gothic literature is my love and I am officially Kelly Creagh's bitch. But, yes, I also gave this book 3 stars (technically 3.5 but Goodreads still hasn't introduced half-star ratings. ugh).

In STRANGE UNEARTHLY THINGS, Jane Reye has been called upon to Elias Thornfield's home because of her connection to the spiritual realm. She goes in having no idea what to expect, except knowing that she desperately wants to get away from her past. But when get there, things are even more unusual and harrowing than expected; namely, because a demon is after Elias' soul.

This book is gothic, romantic, and mysterious, which are three adjectives I seek out in literature. Nevertheless, this book fell short.

˙⋆✮ Characters
Although I loved the banter and interactions between the characters, the actual character-building was quite disappointing. You know Jane is on the run from her sad, sad past, but you get zero details about this past except for the name of a character: Helen. You don't know anything about her parents, nothing about the home she ran from, nothing really about how she felt about the death that follows her.

And Helen. Just like every other character that wasn't Elias or Jane, she was given no substance or true backstory. I spent the majority of the book guessing if Jane and Helen were dating before things went awry, and never got an answer. You're led to believe they're "best friends", but the texts and way Jane speaks about Helen screams sapphic.

There's also Giovanni and Ingrid, who, once again, received zero character-building. There are maybe four whole scenes with Ingrid throughout the whole book, and every single one involves tarot cards. Take away the tarot, and we know nothing about her. Giovanni is a flirt, but wants Jane, but also doesn't?

Then there's Elias and his butler/help/assistant, Mr. Poole. Don't even get me started on Poole because who tf and why tf, but Elias is special. Not "this is my #1 book boyfriend" special, but this man is attached to a demon named Bob special. He was okay. We got the most information on him, yet I also feel like I know next to nothing about him. Dare I say, I think this book would have benefitted from being longer to provide more context.

˙⋆✮ Quality of Writing
Small discrepancies above, I did enjoy this book as a whole. I found the world-building a little confusing and the ending just downright bad (and this is coming from someone who savors sad/bittersweet endings), but, yes, I still liked the book. I feel like I would have greatly appreciated some more hell-ish lore and not naming the demon "Bob."

˙⋆✮ Overall Thoughts
Would I recommend? Meh, it's better to just reread Jane Eyre. If you really like Kelly Creagh? Then, yeah, I would.

DNF - 15%

I'd like to thank Edelweiss and the publisher for allowing me a chance at reading this.

I don't know why I attempted to read this book, since Phantom Heart was confusing at times and a let down. I was feeling the gothic romance vibe and it seemed (from the summary) something different from the normal Jane Eyre retellings.

People: I have no idea what was going on in this book, but the lead was absolutely annoying and I just found her insta-attraction to the Rochester male strange, confusing, and wrong. Mixing the paranormal bit in there gives it a different level of heightened anxiety, but also confusion because while you're not quite sure what is going on with the paranormal angle, you can't really focus on this poor relationship we're being given.

I just think there is an idea, somewhere, in this story... but it's not quite clear and at 50% through I didn't want to stick around to find out.

Out of respect for the author I am refusing to rate this book since I did not finish it.

DNF @50%

Typically I try to force myself to finish books I want to DNF, even if I have to skim, just to say that I tried. But I couldn’t. I genuinely couldn’t because life is too short.

I don’t mean to be rude, but it’s like someone googled gen z words/phrases and sprinkled it generously in the dialogue. It really takes you out of the book when a character is “shook.” Which is such a shame because the summary and the back of the spine (yes I bought it) did not give that impression. It’s such a shame because I fondly remember the authors earlier works (what do I know its been years and some YA is just tooo YA).

Also why have side characters at all if they’re going to be one dimensional??

But take this with a grain of salt. Maybe the book does a complete 180 in the last half of the book? Or maybe my review would be nicer if I hadn’t had such high hopes.

....
Zachwyciła Was ostatnio jakaś książka?

Dodaje to dodatkowego smaczku.

Maja jedno zadanie.

Serce rozerwane, dusza usatysfakcjonowana. 5/5 ⭐️

I received an arc of this from Penguin Teen (thank you!) and overall I really enjoyed it! It’s a really cool paranormal Jane Eyre retelling with a fun cast of characters. I LOVEDD the plot when we find out things, and I thought that was the coolest part. The romance was really solid, and I felt like there was a great mix of romance to go along with the plot. This got four stars from me because I didn’t fully connect to the characters. I didn’t feel as many emotions as I could of (especially at the end) if I had felt a deeper connection to Jane specifically. The characters felt a bit surface level, and that was my only critique. I’ve been reading a ton of NA lately, so going to YA was different for me, and that might be why I didn’t love this as much as I would have when I was younger and really into these sorts of books! However, I do recommend to younger readers who love fantasy romance and want a story to get caught up in. I think if there was a sequel with flashbacks, it would have the potential to be AMAZING and give so many more answers to lingering questions from this book.

I received an ARC from the publisher. While a little slow to start, once I felt engaged with the characters and had a better idea of where the story might go, I was completely engrossed in this story. I cried, which I seldom do, and since it touched me deeply, I gave it 5 stars. I don’t really see the Jane Eyre comparisons, in fact, the beginning felt so much more like the black and white movie The Haunting, but I was down with that. Anyway, while the story didn’t necessarily end in a traditional way, it ended the way it needed to in order for it to work and remain true to the tale. If you’re looking for a slightly gothic vibe, a slow build romance, good and realistic character development, and an interesting take on souls and good/evil (without a specifically religious tone), then you should definitely read this book. Due to the way the last few chapters played out, this one will stay with me for a bit…

would’ve been a five star if it hadn’t been for that ending. i’m not really one for bittersweet, open-endedness, or “eventually one day we’ll be together again” endings for romances. was totally vibing before that, though. the atmosphere, the characters, the intrigue, the romance were all great.

content/trigger warnings; nightmares, fire, loss/grief, death of a loved one recounted, misogyny, physical violence, kissing,

I think I’m having a falling out with YA novels right now. I thought it was just romance, but it seems that YA novels in general are just falling short for me. The immature attempt trying to be mature is grating on my nerves. I find myself rolling my eyes while reading. This is definitely a “It’s not you it’s me” problem. But, also, it may honestly be a genre problem as well.

All I saw in the blurb of this book was that it was a Jane Eyre retelling. So, immediately I began to look for the Jane Eyre character counterparts. Jane was simple as the main character in the book is also called Jane. Mr. Rochester was also easy. The crotchety owner of a manor was definitely Elias Thornfield. As for the other characters, I have no clue whatsoever because I’ve only ever watched Jane Eyre. I’ve never read the book. Although now I am totally interested in reading it. It has long been on my list of classics to read that I have never gotten around to. But, after reading this book, I’m sure I will move it up on my classics TBR.

The clear differences in this book and the original story of Jane Eyre, at least that I know of, is that there are characters with psychic abilities. There’s a demon afoot, and a curse floating around. All those things make for a very interesting retelling. However, this book doesn’t really live up to the promise of those enticing paranormal elements. The romance is a little overbearing. As in, it takes up most of the story. Gothic romances are one of the few romances I can endure. But, this romance was a teenage gothic romance, meaning that it felt immature.

I also found the romance strange. The main character of Jane is a very contemporary female main character while the Mr. Rochester in this book is a very Victorian-acting gent. The chemistry seemed awkward and strange making it feel unbelievable. Also, I can’t really say that I liked any of the characters outright. They all felt extremely immature. And, Jane, as a main character, kind of became a broken record sue to her “woe is me” attitude throughout the book. This might sound harsh, but it was just really difficult to connect with her. Perhaps it was due to not knowing much about her past. As a reader, we are thrown straight into the current predicant in Jane’s life. While some of her past is explained throughout the book. Most of it still a mystery even as the book concludes. Without knowing what she has gone through, it’s hard to sympathize with her character much.

I was hoping for more gothic romance and horror. This book, though, was more teenage romance with an almost magical realism use of paranormal elements. Again, my opinion is my opinion, which means that it is perfectly biased. But, I just need more gothic elements in my gothic romance. And, maybe a little less romance.

I was really excited to read this book since I am a huge Jane Eyre fan. However, it didn't totally live up yo my expectations.

At first, it had a lot of promise. This book is very atmospheric and the vibes were perfect. I really loved the sides characters, they may have been my favorite part.

The actual character of Jane didn't really work for me. There was a lot of slang used. Almost too much. When Jane asks Elias if the frightening supernatural entity is his "homeboy" it juts took me out of the story.

The ending was also very unsatisfactory. If this book had a second book perhaps it could redeem itself.

At the end, this isn't really a retelling. It takes on the names and a few character details but it doesn't have the passion or depth that makes Jane eyre a classic.

However, it was a mostly enjoyable. It's worth a read on a cold autumn night. I give it a 3 star rating.
