This has to be one of the best books I've ever read--certainly the best fantasy since Ursula LeGuin, and equally thought-provoking. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where the follies male leaders have wrought has resulted in the hegemony of women and the worship of too-oft-offended Mother Earth, Queens has no fairies and no magic, only the clash of human psyches. Because--who knew?--women are just as given to cruelty and violence as men. Unless (you'll be left wondering) motherhood redeems their worser natures just a little. The lyricism of the writing and the profundity of its philosophizing will leave you breathless. If it weren't a genre book, this would be a literary classic. I wish I could say I'd written it!

The plot may be familiar, indeed archetypal, but the lyricism of the writing and the profundity of its philosophizing will leave you breathless.
