A Royal Christmas

Rate this book
Adelaide Smith is too busy for fairy tales. She's been working hard to put herself through law school and now that the end is in sight, she's determined to stay focused on her goals. Then she receives a letter notifying her that she has been found through a DNA registry to be a direct descendant of King Maximillian V, the ruler of a small Eastern European principality called Montovia. She's understandably skeptical. This is the stuff of cheesy made-for-TV movies, not real life.

Although the pieces of this surprising family puzzle seem too good to be true, curiosity gets the best of her. At the king's invitation, Adelaide embarks on a Christmas break trip that is chock-full of surprises, including a charming village, an opulent palace, family mysteries, royal jealousies, a handsome young member of Parliament--and the chance at a real fairy tale romance with a happily-ever-after ending.

Spend this Christmas with bestselling author Melody Carlson as she whisks you away to a royal holiday you'll never forget!

My personal Rating- Three Stars (and a half)

This plot (trope?) is so common of a normal girl finding out she’s a Princess, but is also just so much fun. I will completely blame the Princess Diaries movies for my love of this kind of book.

This book was cheesy at times and not one that requires a lot of thinking, but that’s nice some days—especially around the busy holiday season.

I liked Adelaide, she’s strong and stands up for herself against a queen that doesn’t like her. It was nice to not see a young woman in this position cowering or being meek. I wasn’t a fan of her best friend, though.

I didn’t love the parts about Krampus. I’m glad that it was portrayed negatively, but it affected my enjoyment of the story at times and makes me mark this book for older girls. The author definitely showed it as wrong and as a comparison for the True Meaning of Christmas, but I disliked the evil of it being in this book.

Being a novella, it did feel a bit rushed at the end to me, but it was still a good ending and an overall fun story. I would have loved to see an epilogue though!

Melody Carlson’s Christmas novel this year is unique and different than any of her previous holiday books. It’s really more like a modern day fairy tale. Struggling College girl’s childhood fantasies come true for her. This story reminds me of the movies Princesses Diaries and Knotting Hill. When you read this book you will understand why I mentioned this. I thought it was interesting and it is very Christmassy! It has the potential to become a Hallmark movie. The story was a quick read and a page turner. I can’t say I thought it was her best ever Christmas novel but it definitely was different. I wasn’t fond of the ending but for the most part I did enjoy the book.

I recommend this book to readers of Christmas books, women’s fiction and fans of the author. It is a standalone book. A Royal Christmas is scheduled to be released on 9/5/23.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions shared here in this review are entirely my own.

This is a nice, quick Christmas read with a modern fairytale storyline. A young American law school student finds out that she has a royal family member in a foreign country. It even comes with a mean stepmother. The story has a great festive mountain village setting from an older time period in present day decorated for Christmas and Christmas activities and with likable characters. I would have enjoyed a more in-depth story that was developed and not so short but nevertheless, it is a great Christmas read to break up longer and heavier books during the holidays. I enjoyed how the characters talked about the real meaning of Christmas and I could picture the hand carved nativity that they put up for the festivities.

The latest Christmas novella by Melody Carlson is lovely. Starting with the cover which is stunning.

Adelaide is a struggling law student when she receives an unreal notification that she has a DNA match with the king of a small country. After doing some research, the claim appears to be legitimate and she travels to the small country to meet what's left of the family she knew nothing about. I loved her confidence and heart. Both seemed incredibly plausible given her background.

And what Christmas novella doesn't end with an HEA? In particular enjoyed the press scene at the end.

My gratitude to publisher Revell for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Do you enjoy Hallmark Christmas movies? I admit I love binging them. Give me Christmas in a small European country with a Cinderella trope & I’m here for it. This delightful Christmas novella touches on every little girl’s secret dream of finding out she’s really a princess. With fun Christmas traditions, romance, intrigue, and a touch of faith, this quick read story definitely put me in the mood for Christmas.

When Adelaide Smith receives an official looking letter in the mail, she surprised to see it’s from the tiny kingdom of Montovia. Through a DNA test it’s discovered that Adelaide is the only daughter of King Maximillian V whose health is failing. Though skeptical and in the middle of law school exams, she decides to visit the small European country. What she finds is a delightful, picturesque village with endearing Christmas traditions and a dying father craving his last few moments with his daughter. But, not everyone is happy the long lost princess has been found, and there are some who definitely want her gone. As she navigates court politics, a new country and holiday customs, she has a handsome advisor and member of Parliament to help her out and keep her safe.

I enjoyed this sweet novella and found myself quickly turning the pages. I only wish it had been a bit longer and more fleshed out. I loved all the Christmas traditions including St. Nicholas and the frightening Krampus as well as a beautiful nativity. The plot to get rid of the princess and king’s brother added a touch of mystery and intrigue which I enjoyed. Adelaide and Anton are a cute couple and I loved their instant attraction. I’d have loved to have their relationship explored a little further, but given the novella format, it provided enough swoony moments to satisfy my romantic heart.

If you’re looking for a sweet, fun, fairytale-like story to get you in the Christmas spirit, this is a great choice. Recommend to Hallmark lovers and clean contemporary romance fans. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given. 3 1/2 raised to 4.

Although it is way too early for me to start thinking about Christmas and the holiday season this was a cute read and a good escape from the weather that currently doesn't feel like fall! Reading this novella definitely reminded me of the Princess Diaries or those cutesy Hallmark movies.

I really enjoyed Adelaide and her zest for adventure! She finds out she is related to the King of Montovia and sets out to meet him before he dies. This story definitely has some interesting characters. Adelaide encounters a kind father, a very wicked stepmother and a stepbrother who is clueless at what is happening around him. For being such a short story this book does have a little bit of mystery and a very light romance. I think if this was a full length novel these two elements could have been developed a bit better. At times it felt flat for me, especially the romance. I knew it was coming but it felt rushed towards the end.

Overall this is a cute story and will definitely put you in the Christmas mood!

Story Enjoyment Rating: 7/10 Christian Faith Rating: 2/3

A Royal Christmas by Melody Carlson is a Christmas-themed Christian contemporary romance. It follows Adelaide, who is training to become a lawyer. She finds out that she has a royal father, and so goes to a small country in Europe to meet him before he dies.
This book feels like a retelling of The Princess Diaries. It follows some of the tropes from that film but also goes off in its own direction.
Some parts of this book I found predictable, and others were not. I enjoyed the unpredictable and original parts more than the others.
There is a romance and some suspense and mystery thrown in.
There is some Christian faith content – in the form of Christmas celebrations and prayer.

A sweet, hallmark feeling Christmas book that will give you all the cozy feels.

When Adelaide discovers she is heir to a small kingdom, and finds out who her father is, she rushes to his kingdom to finally meet him.

A mix of family, faith, and Christmas cheer. I fell in love with King Max (who was my favorite in the story). His love for his daughter and his kingdom really just made the story for me. I wish there was a tad more romance in the story, but maybe this story didn't need it since it was more about family and finding your place.

dnf chapter 11 - just not interested or connecting with this. I have liked other Melody Carlson books but this one just isn't for me. Nothing specifically wrong, just not interested and I am bored personally. If you like the girl finds out she is a princess in another country storyline, check this out.

This book definitely lives up to all of the hype surrounding it! To be honest, fairy tale type stories aren't my favorite, so I wasn't sure if I'd like this. However, the author did a spectacular job making this feel like something out of "real life". She also did a fantastic job making the MC down to earth and very likeable. There was a lot of depth for a novella, as well as a good faith based element.

I was a bit worried when I heard Krumpus being introduced into the story, and was worried I'd have to stop listening. But I found the bits surrounding him to be appropriate, accurate and informative. I think readers who don't know about the pagan festivities and beliefs surrounding him can come away learning about something that is still widely celebrated today, without feeling like something dark was inserted into the story. I'm very careful to guard myself against things like but the author really did a great job keeping it relevant to the story while appropriate for the Christian reader. This book was well done!

A Christmas tale about a girl who grows up never knowing her father: after her mother passes away, she receives a letter from another country inviting her to visi. She discovers the man she never knew is actually a king…and he’s dying.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a very similar plot on Netflix, but it’s still a fun concept for a holiday story.

Adelaide is living her life trying to make it to the end of law school when she receives a letter telling her she is the daugher of a king in a tiny country. She's understandably skepticle, but decides she doesn't have much to lose by going to see what's possible -- especially since she's always wanted to know who her father was. What started as a far-fetched idea slowly begins to feel possible. Soon she's on a journey that has her interacting with her father and learning more about this country and how she might be part of its future. Throw in a handsome tour guide and a quest for the truth and you hve the ingredients for a sweet story that will put you in the mood for Christmas. It reminded me of Princess Diaries in some ways. A sweet, light read.

I received a free copy of, A Royal Christmas by, Melody Carlson, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. After taking a dna test, Adelaide, finds out she is related to royalty. Adelaide goes to Montovia to meet her family. I could not imagine taking a dna test and finding out I have royal blood. Adelaide is a great characters the Queen not so much. This is a clean romance, not as much religious undertones as her their books though. I really enjoyed this Christmas story.

Every holiday season, one of the things I look forward to is reading Melody Carlson's Christmas books. While her other stories are great too (she was in fact one of my very first introductions into Christian fiction), there's just something about her Christmas stories that I cannot get enough of. A Royal Christmas was absolutely no exception.

Right from the start, this definitely gave me Princess Diaries (the movies) vibes, in both the main character discovering she was a princess and events later in the story that I won't say so as not to give spoilers. Still, it very much was its own unique story as well. There was such a nice mix of holiday charm, faith and royal drama/mystery that kept me very much intrigued through to the end. As a novella, it was a very quick read--- I was able to finish in one sitting. While I definitely think this could have been even better as a full-length novel to maybe have seen more development in the romance aspect of the story, I still felt like the story felt complete as it was. I will say I was a little bit confused about how the line of succession in this country worked and wished there would have been a little more clarity on that... but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story.

If you're looking for a fun Christmas novella and love a good royal story, this is certainly one worth checking out.

2 1/2 elevated to 3.

It's a cute story set in a fictional European country with a light Cinderela trope. Unfortunately, the writing isn't as deep as I like and there wasn't chemistry between Adelaide and Anton.

I liked the worldbuilding, the customs, and the secondary characters. The ending was abrupt and an epilogue would have helped.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

While there is a small romance in the book, the story was more focused on the relationship with her father. I was liked that it had a mystery involving her missing uncle. The parts with krumpus had me concerned, but we were turned back to the true meaning of Christmas. I look forward to these novellas every Christmas.

A Royal Christmas is a sweet novella that will charm and resonate with fans of Hallmark movies, offering sweetness and joy.

In this holiday tale spun by Melody Carlson, the essence of fairy tales is beautifully captured while incorporating her own unique twists and turns.

All readers looking for a Christmas novella that dances with the essence of royal stories, A Royal Christmas is for you! This quick read sparkles with charm and relatable characters as it serves as a satisfying, fictional escape.

The central message I carried away from this book is the unwavering truth that the plan of God, executed in His timing, is undeniably the most excellent course.

I received an eARC of A Royal Christmas from Revell and NetGalley. I am neither obligated to write a positive review nor compensated for doing so. This review is my sincere reflection of this delightful novella.

I enjoy binging on Christmas novels and novellas throughout November and December, and Melody Carlson can always be counted on for a heartwarming Christmas story every year. A Royal Christmas is no exception, but it is also refreshingly different from much of the Christmas fiction available. Instead of a main character returning to her small hometown, A Royal Christmas centers on a main character finding herself leaving not only her hometown, but her entire country in search of the truth about her origins. I enjoyed the cast of characters, was quickly invested in the story, and would love to read a follow-up novel to continue the story and fully flesh out the relationships that have been forged in A Royal Christmas.

Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Totally unbelievable story at the end. One minute she's crown queen, the next her uncle is because her parents weren't married and therefore the legal queen?

Didn't connect with the main character. Wasn't rooting for her and too similar to The Head That Wears the Crown and The Princess Diaries.

The holiday novellas by Melody Carlson are enjoyable to read and naturally emphasize the true meaning of Christmas. While reading this story I was brought back to the Princess Diary movies. It starts out like the movie as Adelaids Smith receives an invitation to meet King V of Montovia. She is taken aback to learn that this King is part of her family tree. Adeaide is surprised because her mother was so tight lipped about the identity of her father. Adeaide was nervous about this meeting because she had no idea what she would encounter when she met the King in his magnificent kingdom. I liked all the detours readers went on as Adelaide attempts to unravel the puzzling situation she found herself in. This is a fun, heartwarming Christmas tale that is full of tender family moments and intrigue as Adelaide tries to resolve the mystery.

Adelaide Smith quit her job at Common Grounds Coffee to complete her law degree. Things change when an official letter arrives from Moldavia including a check for air travel to visit her father, the King. Adelaide's mother never told her who her father was.

Her arrival in Moldavia brings her joy, but heartache soon follows. A Royal Christmas is a magical Christmas read full of surprises, and deception. You will get caught up in the emotions of Adelaide as she discovers things aren't what they appear to be. All the characters were well-developed and I connected with them right away.

I thoroughly enjoyed the inspirational and uplifting storyline filled with faith, strength, and love. It's a story that you will remember. Another great read from Melody. Highly recommended.

I have loved every book I have read that Melody Carlson has written. The characters are always relatable and often make their way into my heart from the start.

Adelaide Smith grew up as an only child of a single mother. She did not know anything about who her father is, and her mother was not forthcoming with any information. Now tragically, it has been nearly three years since the death of her mother in a tragic car accident.

Upon finishing her last day at Common Grounds Coffee so she can concentrate on completing her law degree in the coming year, her best friend Maya gives her a ride home. Upon arriving at home, Adelaide goes through her mail, when she notices an unusual legal-size envelope from the country of Montovia. Is this a scam, she questions as she opens it and immediately is in shock. The very official document states it is believed she is the daughter of the King of Montovia, who is extremely ill and wants to meet her. It goes on to say Adelaide is the heir to the throne.

This delightful, fast-paced fascinating story follows along with Adelaide as Maya convinces her to accept the offer to travel with all expenses paid to the small European country of Montovia to meet her father. She has no idea of the adventures that await her. Some welcome her with open arms, delighted to know the daughter of King Max, as he is known and loved by many. There are others who would be most happy to do away with her. It is almost Christmas time, so she agrees to stay through the holiday. This delightful, heartwarming story has a few crisis situations, a bit of romance and the joy of Christmas as Adelaide celebrates the birth of Jesus among her newfound friends and family.

I've had the pleasure of visiting Bavaria a handful of times for the Christmas season, and the author really got the setting of this book so right! The village was lovely and it had a wonderful seasonal feeling to it. I enjoyed the fun descriptions of the clothes and the castle too.

Beyond that, this one was a major miss for me. The writing was sloppy and just too casual. It felt like I was reading something a young person had written, I am sorry to say. There was something so grating about how she constantly referred to her father as "the King." It just eeked the cheeseball factor up way too high for me. I also just found the MC very unlikable, and her character sort of irritating. It was odd to me how she clearly broke social boundaries initially with the queen to the point of absolute rudeness, and then tells Anton, oh sigh the queen just doesn't like me! Now the queen ended up being the villain of course, but this doesn't change the manipulative behavior of the MC. In the end, the resolution was lacking for me as well.

Unfortunately, I just cannot recommend.
