Forced to leave her community with her family, Clara Burkholder is cast into a miserable life of work and drudgery. She misses being Amish and longs to return. When she hears that Jonas, her childhood friend, has returned to the community, Clara becomes even more desperate. She longs to reach out but can’t find a way. Not until tragedy strikes. Jonas Garber is putting his foot down. After growing up in the Amish community, and being forced to relocate with his family, he has returned and is determined to remain. His father thinks otherwise and has visited several times to convince him to return, but Jonas knows he is right. Or is he?
Disaster looms, and Jonas’s convictions are shaken. He needs comfort, which comes in the form of a letter from his friend Clara whom he’s never stopped loving. But things have changed; Clara is no longer Amish. Can they find even ground? Or will their present circumstances keep them apart forever?
Going Back Home is a sweet short story written by Hannah Miller. The main characters are very likeable. I really had issues with the parents however. After being forced to leave their Amish community as teenagers Claira and Jonas want nothing more than to return home where they were happy. Can they leave the English world behind and also their families. This story shows how people follow their hearts to be happy.
I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.
I liked the fact that Jacob and Clara knew what they wanted out of life and that they wanted to return to the community! I didn't care for the way each parent either didn't listen to what their children were telling them. Costa's parents treated her like an employee instead of a daughter. And Jacob's dad laid a huge guilt trip on him when his mom died, so totally unfair. I would recommend this book to all my friends.
Both Jonas and Clara had been taken from their community by their parents. They had dreams of going home. Jonas lost his mother and he had not been able to go and see because his father and mother had been shunned. Clara goes back and they get together and are happy again. Enjoy this story of love and their love of God.
A sweet story about a young girl coming of age and finally making an adult decision. Great characters wonderful story line and of course a HEA! An enjoyable read.
Back to Basics The author does a good job looking at families that leave the Amish community or are asked to leave (shunned). Taking it to the personal level illustrates what these things do to families. This was not a negative vibe although Jonas' mother dying was sad. I did not however that the family dynamics don't change that much even though Clara's father wanted more freedom he still expected his adult daughter to obey him without question.
A young girl’s family left the Amish community for more freedom in the outside world. Everyone is content except the 18 year old daughter who never wanted to leave in the first place. Will she find happiness in her new life or will she be brave enough to go back home to the Amish?
Great book. Clara who has to live English is missing her Amish roots. Her father doesn't listen to her and makes her take on jobs and take care of the family also. Jonas had to leave the Amish due to his family. He is back now where he belongs. Will they get what they want out of life or will their parents destroy their hopes and dreams. A must read.
This story deals with the anguish of being forced into a totally different life style and how her parents treated her like a slave. She had no time to truly be herself.
This story had me frustrated and angry but in a good way. It was told with heart and faith. I liked how Jonas realized that God was in control of who lived and who died and accepted it so he got peace again. Thank you once again Hannah!
This was a sweet story about an Amish girl who had to choose between staying with her parents and family in the Englisher world or return to her Amish community and her boyfriend. It was well written and I found hard to put down. I would definitely recommend it.
You grow up in a way of life you love. Then things are changed a new home New life. Sometimes we don't adjust to the new life and we need to go back home to where we are happy and loved. Good book
No effort was put in this book. It did not deserve a star rating. It was about nothing, said nothing, and the reader profit nothing from taking time to read it.
