Rate this book
Falling for her was inevitable... but trusting her was not as easy...

Who can resist Miss Delphine's charms? Strong and independent, Delphine Ivory takes over her late father's Inn, The famous "Seven Bells", one of the most popular places in London, usually visited by noblemen travelling for business. A woman alone running an Inn is not an easy task, and the most difficult part of the job is... men! She is used to receiving gifts and compliments and has her ways to keep the suitors away without insulting them... until a mysterious nobleman arrives! Behind his handsome face, Delphine can see the ways of a rake...

Maximilian Blane, the charming son of a powerful Baron, comes to the Inn for the first time, running away from his father's pressure about finding a bride. He is a cruel, bad-mannered man who hates women. His heart has been broken in the past and now he believes all women are pure evil! He will be offensive toward Delphine and she will seek revenge! She will make him fall in love with her, only to prove the power of a woman...

But who knew that Maximilian had his own agenda as well?

Her lies feel unforgivable and his broken heart cannot take any more of them. Lies and pride will be their enemies, while an Earl and a Marquess -both aiming for Delphine's hand- will threaten them both. All they need to survive the madness is to find trust in each other!

Delightful!

Well written! Love the complex, twisted storyline - much like a corkscrew with all the twists and turns! The characters are extremely well written, with intelligence, strength, and human frailty! Well done Ms. Byrd!

I have read several of Edith Byrd's book, but I must say this one is my favorite. It is such an interesting story and the characters are wonderfully described. I actually laughted out loud durng parts of this story. I think when you finish, you will have laughted out loud too or at least have a smile on your face and know that love is not a game. Delphine have just lost her father with whom she has helped run The Seven Bells Inn in London. She is trying to come to grips with running the inn without her father. Maxmilian Blane has had his engagement broken off by a woman who tells him she loves someone else. He runs off to London to try to figure out what to do with his life now and decides to stay at The Seven Bells Inn. Now just try to image all the things that can happen when they meet. You won't be disappointed!!!

Instead of the expected status difference, this romance shows how attitudes toward love differ between a man and a woman. When they met, Maximillian was in a rude state of mind. His heart was broken and he was angry at all women. On the other hand, Delphine was insulted that he was so unkind and determined to make him feel affection once again. Neither one of them intended to fall in love. Two aristocrats with ridiculous personalities were often guests at the Inn and had misinterpreted Delphine loved them because she was such a kind hostess. They tried to make Maximillian leave so he could not provide competition for them. Their humorous but arrogant behavior has abrasive results. Yet they play a surprisingly strategic role in the climax. There is rather a surprising conclusion. This reader found the character developments and plot twists a bit challenging to follow.

Cloying

IMHO, technically well-written with no real plot and no action to drive the story. There were decent enough characters, but I found the baron's son to be fickle falling in love so quickly immediately after being jilted and h to be a bit immature. The supporting characters, the Earl and the Marquis, Bessie and Alice, stole the book.

Chapter 8 "stout" used not as physical description but as a character strenght.
Chapter19 reflecting on merit of inheriting title or position.
